From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

If there wasn't a cash to be had at Euros, they could send Z/G, S/K, and P/M to get those WS championship points and to spread the wealth.

What I find odd is they started quite well, there was no evidence of the injury. Then the lift went awry he got up and started to think about things. Maybe he thought there was no way they could catch Z/G now. They were so close to the end. The only had the spin, diagonal step sequence, and final lift. Zhulin looked really upset. Could they have taken a quick timeout? Could they have gotten a quick medical timeout for a topical painkiller? It just looks like he took the easy way out by Russian standards. So I'd be surprised if we see them at Europeans. But this is just my opinion of things. I hope they recover quickly, this season has just been so uneasy for them.

It is easy to judge but only he knows what he felt. Time out can help if you have cramps, but it wouldn’t help if you for example tear your meniscus. And painkillers- the same. With some injuries, it is not the pain that is the worst bit (even when the pain is really bad). Much worse is that with some injuries the leg just gives way. You step on the leg and it doesn’t carry your weight. That can be a bit of a problem when you are supposed to be lifting someone, because you are not only endangering yourself but someone else too. When I torn my meniscus during my lesson, I knew that having five minutes rest was not going to help. I also knew that no amount of painkillers was going to help. Even though I really wanted the lesson to continue, there was no way it could.

I would be surprised if we see them at Europeans-not because the federation wouldn’t want to give them a chance before Z/G, but I believe that there is really something wrong with his leg and it probably won’t be fixed in a month (or it may be fixed but they would lose too much training time). I don’t believe he would want to throw away his chance to go to Europeans. And how they skated the first half of the program, I am pretty sure they would get the bronze.

According to this article that was posted in the Dance thread, it was an ankle injury that occurred during the FD.

Watching the warm-up a little earlier this morning, apparently, the leg was giving him issues before the performance. Victoria looked really concerned for him, he was struggling to move in places. Probably he reaggravated it during the performance or some other injury happened? They need to treat that asap or it could spell disaster for their future. Pushing it to go to Europeans might also be a big mistake.

It sucks. It was the first time this season they skated the FS such way that I actually liked it. Watching any previous competitions this season I thought they were weak and this FD is not made for weak skating, but her at the nationals they were really going for it.

I am amazed by Alena Kostornaia. Unbelievable skating skills and more importantly, dancing skills. She stands out so much in the field, I hope she can go past growth and puberty correctly because I'm already rooting for her to win everything

IA, Konstantinova beating her in the free had me a bit ???

I also think that Gubanova could've been scored higher, looking at how much they went to bat for other skaters.

Me thinks the judges mixed Skating skills with "speed".
The scores were a little bit confusing to be honest. Seeing the ladies with the best artistry (and arguably skating skills) get low PCS was weird.
Russia has something rare with Kostornaia. I hope she lasts because she can challenge seniors with those dancing skills, the transistion won't be awkward. So much refinement.

Kostornaia and Gubanova are both so artistically impressive!! They are incredibly special and I really hope they can adapt through puberty and have great senior careers!
I do too, but I worry about Gubanova's jumps. She struggled in the early part of the season, but rebounded well here. Kostornaia, OTOH, has the solid technique most of Eteri's girls have so, there's hope for her. I sincerely hope that she doesn't fall prey to the Radionova Syndrome of too soon/too late by the next Olympics.

I absolutely love Kostornaia and Gubanova. I wonder if they were held down a bit to leave room for the senior skaters? I watched Alena's LP. Haven't watched Nastia's LP yet but I was so impressed with the SPs of both! I was able to watch only some of the LPs because I had to see a friend. Haven't seen Konstantinova's LP yet. Was she really That good?

Will try to watch more performances tonight.

Gubanova's LP was my favorite of the event!! I was actually impressed with Stasya's LP. She looks a bit more polished than she did last season. But I don't think she should have placed above Gubanova here.

Thanks @Ka3sha. Not unexpected. There is a possibility that if Samarin or Aliev do not do well at Euros, they may still go with Voronov for the Olympics. It's fair to give them the chance, but if at least one of them doesn't medal given the general men's competition in Europe, I'd send Sergei to Korea. The Euro podium should include Fernandez, Kolyada and either of the other two Russians. If not, if I were the fed, I'd tell the lot to stay home. Whoever medals at Euros will go to the Olympics. I would really like to see Aliev put it all together in two skates, but I suspect it will be Samarin simply because he fights for the skate.

No. They have 2 spots for the Olympics. One for Kolyada one for either Samarin or Aliev.

Why on earth would anyone want to see Voronov over Samarin or Aliev is beyond me. The petition made sense when Menshov finished above and was not sent to the Euros, but in this case Voronov finished 4th. For a change I even agree with the judges. Voronov's skating is outdated. He could be competitive if it was between him, Pluschenko and Klimkin. I don't see why would the RusFed prefer a 30y.o inconsistent skater over a erm.. how old are those guys? 18-20? with a harder content, better skating skills (ok, Aliev, not Samarin), better programmes (seriously? a football?) and a future in this sport.

The financial support the athletes get in Russia plays not for their advantage - they are not motivated to win, but to make it to the team who will be sponsored by the state. Leonova is not finding out what else she is good at because why bother, Voronov is 30, injured, tired and is not attempting to start a career, Tuktamysheva's recent interview is about basically, not progressing, just sticking around and skating, because `why not'. The only one who dared to say `that's it' was Lipnitskaya, while someone told me even Volosozhar/Trankov are still in the team and are being financed (am not sure whether its' true though).
