From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

I wonder does NJ have some kind of court database search option.

I don't think so. It seems like it is not like New York.

ETA: Actually, I found a database, but his name didn't show anything. That doesn't mean there isn't anything there.

Can he skate with Davankova? I know I am dreaming. It's not going to happen.

He says in the interview that he has a partner now. I can't tell when the interview was actually done, but it must be fairly recent (after he quit skating w/Lozko), since he talks about doing commentary for Telesport.

Poor guy, he seems like he is going to suffer from back pain forever. He says he is used to it now but I can't imagine living that way, especially for someone who is still a teenager.

Speaking of Fedichkina, I wonder if Russia has sufficient depth in the ladies that they can further filter their talents by more heavily criticizing technique (harsher calls and penalties on edge calls, URs and poor axel technique, etc). This is similar to when they started giving bonuses to clean 3/3s a few years back.

Some of the current top ladies have horrible 2axels.

They are currently giving bonuses for 3A and quads for women, as well as spins with 2+ GOE.

Yes but it seemed to me at the last Russian cup that the bonuses were used to prop favourite skaters up and keep not as known or not favourite skaters down. It happened several times that a skater’s total points suddenly increased with a few extra points ten minutes after they initially scored the skater. The impression it gave me was that they didn’t like certain skaters to place too low (relatively), so lets find him/her a few points to push him/her up. I am all for adding points for quads or in the past for triple-triple, but it seems to me that the points from spin are not as straightforward.

Just watched Voronov’s SP. If I understood correctly, Tarasova said in her comments said that ‘he trained like a dog’. (Trenirovalsa kak sobaka). I am just wondering how much do usually Russian dogs train. I am guessing she means he trained a lot? It is a weird figure of speech to compare it to dogs.

From Russia with a smile... :)

A strange exposition has opened in Petersburg. The texts were promising, that on the first floor people would be able to see materials from the archives belonging to Tamara Moskvina and Alexei Mishin, on the second floor they would see the history of their students: Alexei Urmanov, Alexei Yagudin, Artur Gachinski, Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, Oxana Kazakova and Artur Dmitriev, Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov. It was said, that Mishin and Moskvina had 2 Olympic champions in men single skating and 4 Olympic champions in pairs.
It was interesting to know who were those "2 Olympic champions" and which of Yagudin's costumes they were going to show as a "legendary" one (in this context)...

Moskvina, Mishin, Bestemianova, Bobrin, Yagudin and Totmianina were going to come to the opening. It seems Mishin didn't come...

'Working like a dog' is a common English idiom.

I wasn’t born English though, and it is not an idiom in my language. And it is first time I have heard this, that’s why it stuck in my head. Well, now I will be wondering not only about Russian dogs, but also about English dogs. I wonder what are they doing with the dogs in those countries.

ETA: just realised, in my language we work like a screw.

Well most dogs, until about 150 years ago, were working dogs so I'm sure the phrase has some basis in a time when people depended on their dogs to do many different task.

I wish Panfilova was sent to Pluschenko’s school after January. It is unlikely she will get to junior’s worlds this year, but if she spent five months over the summer (let’s say from February to June) in Pluschenko’s school, we could see a triple next season.

It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog

Any Beatles fan would recognize.
It's not an idiom in Russian, AFAIK. The Russian one would be 'tired like a dog'.

...keeping kitchen floors clean ;)

In our house, cleaning the pots, pans and roasters after cooking to make the dishwashing easier. One of a dog's favorite jobs! :p

There used to be spit dogs, as well. One of a dog's worst jobs!

I'll add that dogs today also do bomb detection. There are even bed bug hunting dogs, which SFAIK is a relatively new canine occupation.

And dogs assist handicapped people in wheelchairs as well as the blind. It's pretty amazing to see them turning on light switches and opening cupboard doors.

Then, there are various dogs sports like agility and Shutzhund. And of course, some dogs are bred to show and compete in the ring.

It must be an idiom in Russian because Tarasova said it, (just after Voronov finished his SP).

We have ‘tired like a puppy’, not ‘tired like a dog’.

In Norway we have "Work like a horse" and "Tired as a sock".

Lots of dogs use their excellent noses to track bombs (as @Japanfan mentioned), drugs, cancer, mushrooms (both in the forest and the ones living inside damp houses), of course missing people, house bugs, and it can smell if a diabetic persons blood sugar is low... Work like a dog!

Since this thread has turned into discussion of idioms, can someone fluent in Russian tell me what it means to have a "cart of mushrooms delivered"? Is it a good thing? I always read about mushrooms on the Russian forum and have no idea what it means...

I always thought that someone wrote it when they were not happy with the results and thought the judges may be high on something? (Magic mushrooms). But I am not Russian, so maybe I am wrong.

Someone explained it here before - one of the commentators questioned a result/marks and said something to the effect of the judge being on magic mushrooms, and then "mushrooms" just took off as a thing on the forum, kind of like how "tiffing," "voids," etc. took off here.

In terms of S&K vs Z&G vs P&M for the 3rd Euros spot, here are their SBs:

SD
9 72.49 Victoria SINITSINA / Nikita KATSALAPOV RUS ISU GP NHK Trophy 2017 11.11.2017
14 67.99 Tiffani ZAGORSKI / Jonathan GUERREIRO RUS ISU CS Minsk Arena Ice Star 2017 27.10.2017
21 64.38 Betina POPOVA / Sergey MOZGOV RUS ISU CS Warsaw Cup 2017 17.11.2017

The highest Grand Prix scores are 67.62 (China) for Z&G and 64.14 (Russia) for P&M.

FD
10 107.81 Victoria SINITSINA / Nikita KATSALAPOV RUS ISU GP Skate America 2017 26.11.2017
15 101.82 Tiffani ZAGORSKI / Jonathan GUERREIRO RUS ISU CS Minsk Arena Ice Star 2017 28.10.2017
16 100.94 Betina POPOVA / Sergey MOZGOV RUS ISU CS Ondrej Nepela Trophy 2017 23.09.2017

The highest Grand Prix scores are 96.79 (China) for Z&G and 99.88 (Russia) for P&M.

So, if Nikita's injury is minor and he can be ready for Europeans, there's an argument for sending them. They're also the only one of these couples to have won a GP medal. P&M don't have a lot of points in their favor except that they did get 3rd in the FD at Nationals (barely) and have a higher FD score if we count Grand Prix events (the Minsk event is notorious for inflated scores).

And as for Aliev vs. Voronov for the third spot, in general I don't think the federation is keen to push Voronov over a younger guy, but as he did win NHK and make GPF, he might warrant some further consideration, so here are the SBs:

SP:
10 90.06 Sergei VORONOV RUS ISU GP NHK Trophy 2017 10.11.2017
12 88.77 Dmitri ALIEV RUS ISU GP Rostelecom Cup 2017 20.10.2017

LP:
5 181.06 Sergei VORONOV RUS ISU GP NHK Trophy 2017 10.11.2017
33 154.22 Dmitri ALIEV RUS ISU CS Tallinn Trophy 2017 24.11.2017

Aliev's best score on a GP is 150.84 (Russia).

So Voronov is considerably ahead, but I almost think the federation would rather he not go to Euros because if he beat Samarin it would complicate Olympic team selection (whereas Aliev would probably finish a distant 3rd). But the team event is a consideration here. I assume Kolyada will do both events, but if some reason he cannot, they need someone who can do a solid LP.
