Olga Ermolina's interview with Elena Ilinykh and Ruslan Zhiganshin `We'll work with Najarro in Madrid in June' for fsrussia.ru

Elena Ilinykh and Ruslan Zhiganshin came to Moscow for the physical checks at the end of the season, do some paperwork and find some time to have a vacation. They missed their loved ones in the USA and while home try to spend as much time as possible with them. Hence the very fast interview

OE: Your current coach Igor Spilband already said you are going to keep working with him. Why have you decided to stay in the USA?
EI: The decision was made together with our sponsor. We decided to stay and try developing under a new system.

OE: Was the fact you were the best team in Moscow in your group, while in the USA you will be skating along with your experienced foreign rivals?
RZ: No, that was not part of the decision. Though of course we'll gain from having a good sparring partners.

OE: In what way are the practices in Spilband's group different?
EI: It's a different system, a different approach. One can't compare the system in the USA and Russia. They are different, yet both allow getting the highest results.

OE: Who besides Igor works with your team?
RZ: All the specialists - the whole team in Novi. Except for Igor we work a lot with the French ice dancer Fabian Bourzat.

OE: Where do you live?
EI: 10 minutes away from the rink, we rent small apartments. The most important is a convenient bed so you can sleep enough and rest after the practice till the next morning.

OE: Do you have ideas for the new programmes, will you keep working with Antonio Najarro, who created you colourful programmes in the last 2 seasons?
EI: The skeletons of the programmes are done, the music is chosen and the elements are put. Before leaving to Moscow we skated the SP twice. On June 5th we are flying to Madrid for a week to work with Antonio Najarro. From there we'll go back to the USA where a very strict schedule is awaiting us.

OE: What happened last season and how would you evaluate it?
RZ: I don't want evaluate it. We don't want to look back. We need to look forward. We know what to work on and we have a plan.

OE: What do you want to change in your skating and perhaps in yourselves?
EI: We've been skating together just for 2 years now. It would be wrong talking about changes. We just have to progress, develop and do it faster. We need to be reliable and consistent and yet not lose our personalities.

Interesting. I guess Spilband is okay with them working with Najarro. I dont know if I want to be excited about them. Maybe they will improve more under new system and awaay from Moscow.

That Frida FS was awful, but the Carmen SP was great, so I'm not sure what to expect from the program.

But if Shpilband can't solve their technical problems no one ever will.

Thank you for this translation! (It's ridiculous how eager I am for any scrap of news about them ... ;))

I'm rather glad that Ruslan declined to dissect last season. What's the point? It's over and done with. Good to focus on the future. It's a new coach, new training environment, new programs. Hopefully they will do well, I still believe there's so much talent there. And Igor will not let them compete unprepared; I am certain of that. I am hopeful that he can get them into a good mindset before events, so they're feeling confident and won't make silly mistakes.

That was the biggest problem last year. Whatever you think of last season's programs (I still like them both), the impression of them was ruined by the bizarre, often glaring mistakes. I believe it could've all been different without the mistakes.

I'm surprised that they're working with Najarro again since their programs are already choreographed and neither SD or FD is his style, but maybe he's continuing to work with them on movement and crispness.

Am not sure Najarro is working with them on the ice, so whatever they learn from him they would have to translate from the dance floor to the ice afterwards anyway. The `skeletons' might be just where they put the elements/the general flow, while Najarro would work on the spanish moves etc?

I'm hoping Igor brings in someone to choreograph for his team's and to be there permanently. His coaching skills are unparalleled but his choreography couldn't be more dull and predictable. Also, freeing himself of the choreographic responsibility will help him in the execution of his strength as a coach.

I still wonder if Igor's strength is that he is a good coach or good at hiding weaknesses. I say that because the biggest thing Natalia and Gennadi worked on with Tanith and Ben were fundamental skills which all of her team's possessed. Then again, Meryl Davis is his student and she's without flaw technically and Tessa, apart from Twizzles sometimes is superb. Collaboration is so important though. He can't do it all and when developing a new team, having the choreographer present is huge.

Camerlengo and Shpilband should chat...yin/yang

Maybe Igor sent them to Najarro to give them the rejected Chock FD from last season. Might as well get some use out of it.
