Olga Ermolina/Tatjana Flade's interview with Maria Sotskova/Elena Buyanova `My LP will continue the theme from the SP' for fsrussia.ru

Her role in the Junior Worlds was a hard one: coming to Drebcen together with the other Russian skater during the competition Maria was left alone - Tsurskaya and Fedichkina had to withdraw. She had no choice but to do all she could and get 3 spots for Russia for the next year.
After the JW she gave a long interview where she mentioned planning moving to seniors. It happened she also moved to a new coach - from Svetlana Panova to Elena Vodorezova.

Q: Was the contact with the new coach immediate?
MS: I was very nervous, even afraid on my first day. Elena Germanovna came to the practice and looked so serious. I have not been practicing for a whole week, was out of shape and had to do my best.. It worked. Then things started working out, I relaxed and we just keep working. I feel am progressing. I work with Maks Zavozin on my gliding every day. I feel my gliding is wider. After all it's something that needs to be done daily and not just from time to time. Maksim used to come to our rink in Novokosino seldom and we would work a bit while here we all all the time.

Q: Do you have your new programmes done?
MS: Yes. The LP was choreographed by Peter Tchernyshev, the SP by Nikita Mikhailov. It happened the LP is a continuation of the SP. In short - in the SP am in a cocoon, trying to get out but it's hard. Hence the contemporary moves, which we are working on now and polishing with the team choreographer Irina Tagaeva. The LP is easy and light - the cocoon becomes a butterfly, she flies.

Q: Whose idea was it?
MS: Elena Vodorezova's. She offered a light and airy LP, and an opposite to that SP. First we thought of a different music for the SP, but while working on the programmes we decided to combine them with Schnitke's music.
I'm so grateful to everyone for their help - the coach, the choreographers. It's always so hard for me to come up with the ideas and find the music. It's always someone else who comes up with the ideas - so far I was never able to do it myself.

Q: Previously the ice rink was very near home, while now you have to commute from Reutov to TSKA rink.
MS: What's the big deal? The whole country commutes to work. I'm not the first and not the last. It just takes an hour. Not horrible. I thought it would be much harder. My mom and dad commute an hour to work.

Q: Why have you decided to leave the previous coach?
MS: It was not a spontaneous decision, but one I thought a lot about. It was a hard break up, but that's the path I chose. Besides the conditions in Novokosino became worse - the amount of ice remained the same, but there are a lot of new guys. Skating with 13-14 other kids on the same ice is really hard. So I left Svetlana Panova not because I was not comfortable with her as a coach. She is a great specialist and I'm grateful for all she done for me. I left because of the conditions. No matter how amazing the coach is you can't do anything without practicing conditions.

Q: Was it your choice who to switch to?
MS: Yes. I found Elena Germanovna's number and called. Spent 2 days under pressure - will they take me? will they not? In the end it worked out.

Q: I.e. you first parted your ways with Svetlana Panova and only then started thinking what's next?
MS: Yes. I first left and then started looking for another coach. Had I done it the other way around it would be a treachery. Hence I walked into nowhere. Would I or would not be taken into another group was another question.

Q: What if no one have? Would you leave figure skating?
MS: No, I wouldn't. My career in sport just begins now. I plan to debute in the seniors this year,so everything is ahead of me.

The coach Elena Vodorezova(Buyanova) comment.
We had to create two new programmes for Maria in a very short time. We wanted something unusual, very light, a blow of fresh air - because Sotskova's skating reminds me of Carolina Kostner.
Peter Tchernyshev had his schedule set for 2 months in advance and getting into his busy schedule was almost impossible. But when he brought Schnike's music I said at once it's a programme for Maria - I hear in the music just what I was looking for and what would suit her the best. Despite being so busy Peter found time to work on Maria's LP. He had no time left for the SP though. We worked together with my ex-pupil Nikita Mikhailov - a talented guy with lots of ideas, a very unusual seeing of figure skating.
At the same time our sound director was looking for the suitable piece for her SP and suddenly came up with a different piece by Schnitke. This is how the idea to combine the SP and the LP came about.
Both Nikita and Peter did what we wanted - tried to emphasize the skater's strong sides - her grace, light, beautiful lines and arms. Am very grateful to everyone who helped and keeps helping us in our work. I really hope all works out and we'll see the new Maria Sotskova.

Love this attitude, she seems to be a nice girl.

I'm glad to hear that they are constantly working on her SS.
Good luck, Masha :)

Glad to hear they are working on her SS. She is such a graceful skater and hopefully her jumps will remain after the growth spurt.
