So what did y'all think of the first 2 episodes?

I liked them more than I thought I would (as far as regular broadcast TV programming goes these days).

I knew all about Roseanne (Barr and Connor) being a Trumper so I was prepared. Weird, because she was all about the Champion for the Working Class and feminism before.

I thought there was a bit overacting from all cast members but the most authentic were Sara Gilbert and Laurie Melcalf.

John Goodman seemed a bit off and I thought Becky #1 (my favorite Becky) was overacting a bit.

I did laugh more than I thought would through the episodes.

I heard Sandra Bernhard is in the last episode. And I hope Martin Mull and Estelle Parsons come back. I Wiki'ed both of them and both are still alive and Estelle is still working.. she just did Frankie & Gracie.

Nana Mary played by Shelley Winters passed. And its weird because across the street from me is an apartment that her and Marilyn Monroe once shared together. I walk past it every day.

Its cool that Roseanne ALWAYS tackled modern issues and they stay true to that with Sara Gilbert's son wearing clothing traditionally seen as feminine and with Becky being a surrogate. (I can relate because my sister is one too.)

What did everyone else think who watched?

I really enjoyed it. Roseanne was herself as usual, agree John Goodman was not quite there, but it's been a long time and he's a good actor, so maybe just needing to get back in his groove. I thought Laurie Metcalf was a little OTT, but then remembered her character could be like that back in the day, and it makes sense that in the intervening years the effect would be magnified.

Sara Gilbert has definitely got it together as an actress. Apparently she was one of the big proponents of the reboot, and she has an Exec Producer credit now too. Didn't see enough of DJ really, but agree that Becky 1 was probably the worst of the bunch. Doesn't seem that she's had much real work over the years, so maybe that's why.

Casting for the kids was great - almost wondered if young Harris was related to Sara Gilbert as she was so believable as her daughter (apparently not). Sounds like there will be more focus on her when Johnny Galecki shows up and they deal with that story.

Loved how they kept the feel of the original series, a million nods to it and to the real lives of the actors, but made it very modern at the same time.
 
Never liked the show in the first place; makes me unlikely to pay attention to it, now.
Reboots are rarely well-done anyway.

If I needed another reason to ignore the show; here it is.
 
The political content was minimal - my bet is they thought they should get it out of the way early, as the show has always dealt with current issues. I don't think it will come up much in future.

That being said, if you didn't like the original series, I doubt you'd like this either. Back in the day I didn't like it much either in the beginning, but there were fewer channels back then so one ended up watching things just because they were on, but in later seasons I grew to appreciate it.

Becky # 1 had an amazing turn in "Boys Dont Cry" with Hillary Swank in like 99/00. She played the woman who got shot and killed.

Next I saw her again in an episode of Sex and The City (maybe '05) where she played a woman who was going to give up her baby to Charlotte but then decided to keep it.

My coffee buds thought Sara Gilbert's daughter was miscast in this series. She seemed like she could be the mother or big sister to Sara and not the daughter.
 
When does it normally air? I'll have to check it out on demand to see if it's worth it.

Didn't Dan actually die at the end of the 8th season, at Darlene's wedding? And then the 9th season was a fantasy written by Roseanne? How do they resolve that?
 
Loved the original series but I'm not really interested in the reboot especially since they made the lead character a Trump supporter. As if there wasn't enough of the guy all over the airwaves already.

There was a ton of stuff in that show, including Dan's owning a gun, and the kid getting thrown out of school for having a pocket-knife. Even though Roseanne's character is a Trump supporter, there is plenty of backlash from Jackie, so the overall effect was liberal. Laurie Metcalf's acting/the character she portrays -- I find her really annoying. But I don't watch for the acting, I watch for the writing.
 
I loved the early years of Roseanne. The characters hold up well and its kinda where "the Conner's" would be 20+ years later. Although if they are working on a "real time" timeline, Harris is wrong. She would be 21 now, not still in high school. :P But I get why they made her in high school. Nice they mentioned Jerry since he was never really part of the series since he was a baby. I wonder if they will cast the role or he'll just be "on that boat with no phone" the whole time. :lol: When Roseanne was talking to Becky and just said "your husband died" and they didn't elaborate any more, I thought maybe the actor didn't want to come back. I had no idea Glenn Quinn (Mark) died back in 2002. But what about Jackie's son, Andy? He would be 24, so where is he? I can see him not really being part of the show either since he was also a baby, but give him a mention where he is, like Jerry. :P

Up until the "fantasy season" started, they still had The Lunch Box, right? If "the fantasy season" never happened, then I hope they address what happened with the restaurant. I'm sure it will be it just went out of business, but it was a successful business for the years it was on the show. I hope they got the political part out of their system now. I don't wanna hear political fights between Roseanne and Jackie every week. Drop a joke here and there, okay .... but don't make it heavy on political views.

But I liked it. It made me laugh out loud, the jokes were funny. The political stuff :blah:. I hope they don't dwell on that too much.

Yeah, Mark Quinn died way back in 02. Sad.

I rewatched both episodes just now. Was nice to see frames of Estelle (grandma) and Shelley (Nana Mary) on the mantel.

I too noticed Harris timeline is wrong.

When Jackie said to Becky "since your husband died." I knew what they were doing... killing of the character since the actor had died.

I think just like the first episode of W&G in the fall they got all the political stuff out in 1st episode, since the second episode didnt tackle it last night.

I loved this series so much the it premiered in 88/89 and LOVED the first 4 years. Then like most series it jumped the shark.

I loved that Rosi loved Halloween and always had killer Halloween episodes too.

I read more articles today how the ratings were huge, especially in the key demo 18-49.
 
Roseanne really was at it's best in the first 4 or so seasons when it was still grounded and when Roseanne's personal issues and one-note mean spiritedness didn't completely take over the character. I also think Laurie Metcalf was at her best during those early seasons too when Jackie still seemed like a real person.

I haven't watched any of the Will & Grace reboot. :shuffle: I watched the 2 Roseanne episodes last night. I see that they just made jokes about Dan - like him saying why does everyone think I'm dead? Or then they found Roseanne's manuscript in the garage and made a joke about how she killed off the best character.

Overall it was better than I expected, but I kind of had low expectations! I agree that Becky1 (Lecy Goranson) was overacting. It was weird because I always preferred her to Sarah Chalke in the original run, and Sarah was the better actress here.

There's still something about it that seems "off" to me. Like it's too jokey or something, where in the original series it was balanced better with drama.

I agree brother! I loved Lecy and didnt take a warming to Sarah Chalke.... but Lecy seemed rusty....

If something seemed off then for me it was like they were trying to cram too much storytelling in in these episodes.. Like they said to themselves "Crap we only have 8 episodes to tell stories of the last 20 years." Like when Lecy came into the kitchen when they were complaining about politics that she was going to get pregnant.. It was like they were trying to cram in as many storylines a humanly possible in 22 minutes.

But overall Im still happy about the episodes.
 
My wife and I are not interested in watching this re-boot but hearing about it's politics maybe it will be worth a look after we finish oiling our parts this weekend. I will post if we decide to watch it but it is not all that likely to happen as far as I think at the moment.
 
I did not watch the original Rosanne. I have read a good deal about how this came together, and I am really looking forward to watching it.
 
No question that Goranson was the far superior Becky during the original run as she WAS Becky and her and Sara Gilbert's chemistry and her chemistry with the rest of the cast was much more natural and real than it was when Chalke played her. However, now, Chalke really is the better actress. I think Lecy Goranson may be having trouble getting into character because she hasn't worked as regularly as Sarah Chalke has, and the character of Becky that she's playing now is really different from the character that she was when she originally played her. I also wonder if Goranson is a deep smoker or something because her voice is what really hurts her performance. If she had a "better" speaking voice to deliver lines I think that would have improved her performance by like 50%.

Thats so weird that you picked up on that too.. I noticed right away that Lecy has a deeper voice.

Regardless I love Lecy.

If you never saw Boys Dont Cry you should. I remember she was Teena (Hillary's) friend in the movie and she was real good....
