Denis Ten Memorial Challenge 2021 - Astana KAZ - October 2-5, 2024

So this is the skater that’s up so high on the subs list that I had no recollection of. Well, weak basics and underrotating her technical content. Not exactly GP standard. :shuffle:

Iushchenkova has a very matronly dress so I was not expecting The Winner Takes It All (actual ABBA, not Mirai’s sad girl cover).

Solid skate and she looks happy; don’t think I’ve seen her before.

Rewound the feed to watch Gubanova, Gutmann & Shiryaeva because I chose, unwisely, to watch Shanghai Trophy pairs.

Gubanova - good skate today. It really is a Euros battle between she and Loena at this point. It may be beating a dead horse in the third season now of no Russian tweens competing, but women's skating is so much better off with the likes of fully-grown, mature women ruling the podiums.

Gutmann - I didn't like this program at Lombardia and I still don't like it. 'Nuff said. Although, I do sort of like that hand position practically on the ice during her sit spin.

Shiryaeva - I vaguely remember her from the JGP last season. Hmmmmm.... Well, that was not terrible. I'm going to have to root for her to medal here and achieve a score high enough to put her ahead of everyone else except Elyce & Sarah on the GP Alternates List and then for at least 3 more vacancies so she can get a GP.

And Samodelkina proves, once again that there really is a "skating while Russian" bonus. Score seems fair for what she did, but we all know she'd have broken 70 with that program if she was still a Russian and not an OAS skater now.

Men’s SP underway. Choosing the same music as Torgy really does Egadze no favours.

We haven’t seen Pinzarrone yet this season, have we? I wouldn’t count her out. And the Swiss women are strong, too.

Didn’t see but thanks for notes. Was Eteri there, with Egadze in KnC?

Yes, Eteri and Mariam Georgiobani from the Georgian fed.

A huge tech box has just appeared on the screen in time for Litvintsev. Clean skate for him, but this programme isn’t half as fun as last year’s Tiger King.

Shaidorov - jumps were great, huge 3ax, makes 4T from a drag look easy. Another Dune programme and gets more into it when jumping is out the way. Very slow in sit spin and struggling to get the rotations.

ETA 95.50 and local fans are screaming.

Before calling out Ruiter to change her sp program, or give up on both her and Schizas, this early on in the season, etc., watch this video example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNz-Ivos5Xg) to understand what she likely expected to do, based on her summer preparation, test skates. She's not the 1st, and will not be the last to have a subpar skate. This being her 1st actual SR competition of the season, with other far more experienced skaters, while feeling the weight of her National title for the first time, etc., yeah it was not the sp she expected, or hoped, to deliver. I'm hoping for a better FS, it will be interesting to see how she will process what happened today, going forward. Skating is always a journey, ice is slippery, and Rome was not built in a day, neither are champion skaters, sometimes you learn best from the bumps along the podium pathway. Happy for Shiryaeva, who was able to seize the opportunity, will she be as able to deliver her free with more attention on her now? We will have to wait and see, at this point in the season, clean programs from anyone are in short supply; I will be thrilled with satisfied smiles from both gals, regardless of final placement.

I like Ruiter, and I'm not giving up on her. I just don't think that somber style plays to her strengths. It reminded me of Kurakova trying to skate to "Gangsta's Paradise."

So, Terreaux/Perron WD. Pallu-Neves/Panesar - issues on their twizzles for both and that's all I really recall - one disco program to "Hot Stuff" begins to meld with another and we're barely 6 weeks into the season, lol.

Reitan/Majorov skated to "Proud Mary" and she's in red. Just because it's shiny red pants and a loose, sleeveless top doesn't mean that I'm not having Smart/Diaz flashbacks, lol.

Ohhhhhhh... JvRStef are also listed as WD now. Something to keep an eye on with regard to the GP openings.

Here for some early morning disco!

Pally Neves / Panesar - Disco (Donna Summer medley). Lots of energy and finger pointing. Overall they seemed more fluid over through the elements but both messed up twizzles in a different way. He seems to be doing better at matching her level of commitment to the programme this year. the choreo Bekker/Hernandez were doing on social media over the summer which made me think they were doing disco too was the start of PN/P’s choreo step.

Ruud - Ballroom Blitz / Proud Mary - She’s looking fab in a red body suit. Seemed fast after the Britzilians. Nicely timed crossrolls to “rolling, rolling”.

Dupayage / Nabais - They have such a distinct style and make the theme fit it. Nice build in intensity through the White Rabbit section. Twizzle issues for Marie.

The borrowed choreography at the music change didn’t help!

Oh no!!!! I have thoughts... Especially with the way the GP Alternate process now works, but that speculation and :EVILLE:belongs in the GP thread. Suffice it to say, I'm wondering what the status of Lauriault/LeGac, Tkachenko/Kiliakov and Lajoie/Lagha are and looking down that list and chuckling at the thought of Skate Canada potentially having to issue an invitation to Soucisse/Firus as a replacement, lol.

So, we've got another KoKo/WangLiu height differential here with Weatherby/Kolosovskyi, but somehow it doesn't bother me as much with this team as it did with the other two. I think it's because he's still standing up straight instead of hunching over to try and shrink himself to more closely match height.

They're not too shabby. Who knew Florida was home to so many Azeri female figure skaters? ;)

Weatherby/Kolosovskyi - Have I seen him in that pleather jacket when he was with Carhart? Not disco! Quite slow but secure through the elements; a decent debut. Interesting choice to open with the choreo rhythm sequence. Massive height difference so they look a bit awkward in the choreo steps. She was in Montreal for a while but they’re with John Kerr here so I guess IAM didn’t want two Azeri teams.

The Mrazeks have some manic energy today, especially in the character choreo sequence!

Taschlers - Already looking much sharper than at Nebelhorn. Massive step up in ice coverage comps with the other teams here. He’s a lot more into this music choice for them than I am.
And yet their score is 2 points lower! And I agree with you - they were looking much sharper today.

Hensen/Lickers - WTH is this first song? Second song - well, it's far more appropriate for a Sr team to skate to "Brick House" than it was for one of the JGP teams earlier this season. By the way, this open-necked dress shirt has a v almost as deep as Deniss'.

Hensen/Lickers - oh yay Brick House. He has sparkly chest hair rather than a bowling shirt. He didn’t seem to have his feet quite under him today, which was affecting their unison. I’m admiring her core strength in the rotational lift but also it was ugly.
