Denis Ten Memorial Challenge 2021 - Astana KAZ - October 2-5, 2024

Hmmmmm... Don't agree with her being ahead of Lara Naki, but whatever.

Shiryaeva - SavMas' 2018 FS music; interesting unitard - mostly navy blue but one side of the torso and sleeve are purple and there's a cutout covered in a slightly slighter blue lace on the other side - I really like this costume! All her combo jumping passes are under review, lol. As are all of her spins. So, basically, the tech panel wants to take a second look at all of her major elements, lol. But, she's kind of interesting to me. If those jumps etc are deemed clean and she earns the highest SB score of all the Canadian women sent out internationally so far... Well, let's just say, Skate Canada deserves all the discomfort it's going through at the moment, lol.

Oooo - Shiryaeva got dumped - 4th in the FS so far and 178.83 - which is still better than Maddie's score at Nebelhorn by 6 points, and she just cruised into the Worlds CTES min here.

Gubanova - jumps are suspect today.

I'm going to laugh if Samodelkina wins this. Good job, Kazakhstan fed - send your obviously best skater out on a JGP and remove any chance of her getting a GP assignment. If you wanted to get her the Jr CTES then you send her to Tayside or Metropole Nice.

WTH - a waltz jump?! There's bailing on a jump and then there's a waltz jump, lol.

Hmmmmmmm... Gubanova had a 6 point edge from the SP but I don't think it's going to hold.

ETA - held up by PCS. Okay, then, judges.

It was a very graceful waltz jump! Just kidding. It was funny to see Gubanova roll her eyes immediately after. Also notable, she did running 3s, but then put her foot back down and stabilized herself before doing the 3r. Smart to make that adjustment if she didn’t feel ready.

Did Lara Naki win? This competition’s Results matrix froze. I was watching JGP Dance, after Starr skated.

No, Gubanova won.

Thanks. I just watched Shanghai women and will rewatch Ten’s last groups later.

Yesterday's (Day 1) livestream is no longer available to watch but today's RD/Jr & Senior Women FS+medal ceremonies still plays at the moment (ETA) - spoke to soon - the video is no longer available :( so I've removed the link.

I’m watching it right now but I’ve had it open on pause while I watched the Junior RD.

Andrews

Landed 3f-2a-2a, but then had falls on solo 3f and 3t, jumps not there today and with the reemergence of Tennell and the bright young teen stars, not sure she’s going to make it back on GP, let alone an international championship team

Disastrous skate, but IIRC it's the first time we've seen a lutz attempt from Andrews in years, even if it was just a double. I had wondered if she was even trying to rework the jump or if she had given up on it.

No edge warning here and looked significantly better than her past lutz attempts. I'd want to see it from another angle before I agree it was from an outside edge, especially given the "complicated" entry, which is usually a disguise.

The double looked intentional to me, and it may have been. The 3F+2A+2A leaves her with an empty box that she can only fill with a double. Doing a 3F+2A+2A and a solo 2Lz is better points-wise than 3F+2A+2T and a solo 2A.

I missed the live stream so hunting down what I can find of dance. Only commentary so far is Taschlers should be leading and Katerina Mrazkova’s costume looks like something one of Capote’s Swans would wear.

Ivanitskiy/Sperry - tango - looking pretty comfortable for a brand new team - steps seemed a bit of a struggle, hesitant into curve lift and lost levels.

Pallu Neves/Panesar - She looks good in red with random hanging doodads. Bastille Pompei song / Mystery of Love - not a great music choice. Nice position in the stationary lift, twizzles looked less bad than yesterday but he got called L1, ugly and awkward choreo spinning move. I think they’ve improved their fluidity and his expression since last year but their tech skills are about the same and that’s where they need to improve.

Weatherby/Kolosovskyi - Kill Bill - think this is Kaitlyn Hawayek choreography - yay finger guns - she has a jacket with a big collar which is riding up and making her look hunchy - decent matching for a new team who are a poor physical match - drive the Zamboni between them on the twizzles - getting messy towards the end, maybe invalid choreo step (started away from the boards).

Dobroserdova/Pellegrini - Poison Ivy blues / some contemporary pop - The least entertaining of this group but doing the best job of getting their levels. Combo lift probably their best element. Look a bit gassed in the second half.

No-one in this group got their CTES (PN/P already have 4CCs).

So, I woke up in time for the last 3 guys and realized I needed to rewind the stream to see Grassl's FS because he apparently skated a banger, or, well, for this group of men, a banger, and won the FS. He was too far back after the SP to pull up for a medal. I'll upload the FS vids of the top 4 men (Grassl, Shaidorov, Litvintsev & Egadze) to my Rumble account later if they don't show up elsewhere before then.

The Russian-adjacent men (Grassl included since he tried to train with Eteri) really have some WTF FS music selections this season. Independent of each other, the music selections would be fine, but some of the choices together in one program are... Well, choices were made and I wonder how much vodka was involved when these choices were made.

Hancock/Fourati - Kept last season’s Depeche Mode FD, which I enjoy but also not really a fan of repeating programmes in dance, especially when they’ve already been competed a lot. He’s really giving it some with the facial expressions.

Reitan/Majorov - Umbrellas of Cherbourg - She’s in yellow and he’s in green. The first half is very sweet and then they get angsty in the choreo sequence. Clearly a big step up from the first group, he’s become a strong lifting partner very quickly. Finally CTES achieved - they’re back to Worlds.

Hensen/Lickers - Her dress screams Firebird and opening with arm flapping confirms. I think the music is a bit dramatic for them but the programme is fine and they might be able to up the intensity when it has more mileage.

Larson/Kapran - Love Story - They’ve improved a lot, but the levels calls are also starting to look more typical for the Denis Ten Memorial.

Bekker/Hernandez - Another nervy skate. Missed the spin again, I think they need to go back to last years. Generous calls on the steps. I like this programme for them but they should be behind Reitan/Majorov today.

I always enjoy a good 007 program and I have to say, BekHern's had potential. They’re still a little slow on the last section, but it's improved a lot since they skated at the British qualifier at the end of August, despite the big flub on the entrance to the dance spin.

DupNab - hmmmmm... not sure what to think of that. In some regards it's very interesting, but I don't think they have the technical chops to quite achieve what they're trying to do.

FlorDes - I'm interested and locked in for the first section, but once the music changes, they lose my interest. Their curve lift is pretty awesome, though!

Flores/Desyatov - Look much more comfortable than yesterday. I don’t really get this programme (or his costume) but she’s clearly very committed to acting out something. I liked the curve lift and the unusual positions in the dance spin.
