Denis Ten announces his retirement (upd : probably not)

He is only 24, but an amazingly long career. He should be proud of his accomplishments. I wish him all the best. And a healthy life.

One of the most talented men this sport has ever seen IMO and truly a trailblazer for skating in his country. It really makes one appreciate what he has done when considering how young Denis was when he achieved his accomplishments when at 24 other male skaters are barely starting to come into their own. I hope Kazakhstan uses him for everything sports related going forward. He and Lori Nichol were magic together and while a part of me will always wonder what he could have truly accomplished, he still did so much in this sport and I truly hope that he’s treated as the national treasure by his country and that he is and enjoys his post competitive life. Thank you for your beautiful skating Denis Ten :)

Thank you to Denis for his beautiful skating through the years and his advocacy for the sport in his part of the world. I think it likely that Denis will do shows and so hopefully we will still see him around :)

Aww, watching him last night I remembered why he was always a favorite of mine - such lovely flow to his skating. I'm sorry to hear he's retiring. Thanks Denis for all the lovely moments and best wishes in the future!!

Edited to add - after reading the last post... whether retiring or not - still best wishes in the future either way!! :)

I've always liked watching Denis skate, and it has been sad watching him unable to land his jumps the last couple of years. If he can get over his physical ailments, sure, continue, but I would be amazed if he could be at Olympic caliber in 4 years. Regardless, he put Kazakhstan on the figure skating map and has his medals too.

Apparently, I may have spoken too soon, sorry

Google translate is letting me down and not working for me at the moment. Just curious as to what he said in the instagram post that implied retirement?

He has a new message where it is clear that he is retiring. :( :( :(

Wait, this is the same one that was posted above. Why would people think it's not a retirement? On the Insta app there is a translation saying "Today my performances ended and the next chapter of my life came to an end...." It is all retrospective and elegiac.

From his post on Instagram:
Dear friends.
Today my perfomances came to an end as well as one of the chapters of my life.
I would like to thank each and every one of you, who supported me during this difficult period.
When I was in the hospital six months ago, I was worried that I wouldn’t make it to Korea for the Olympics.
I devoted all this season to the only goal, which I set four years ago - to participate at the Olympics.

Thanks @Ka3sha! It does sound very retirement-y.

I haven't loved some of his recent programs the way I did the ones he had in 2013 and 2014, but I wish he would have been able to give a better performance in Korea, given his connection with the country. Given his struggles just to get there, hopefully he can be satisfied with just having skated there.

It makes me so sad that injuries robbed us of his exquisite skating. He was a paragon. But a delicate one. He reminds me of the Balanchine quote, "My ballets are like butterflies — beautiful today, and one day they'll be gone." Thank heavens for the internet but it's not the same.

He was so robbed! He had like an 8 point deficit in the Sp (he was 2nd!) and won the Lp convincingly due to Patrick's stumbling and mini mistakes. He lost by a little more then a point overall but it should have been enough :(

Either way he will always be a world and Olympic medalist! Not too bad for a kid from Kazakhstan! Good luck in whatever you do in life Denis
