Found a pattern I liked.
Got the yarn.
Eventually figured out how to make the purchased yarn work with the pattern... getting the sizing right was challenging - my squares were coming out too small, not because of tension but because of difference in yarn weight. Fortunately this was easy (though time consuming) to solve - the pattern easily accommodates extra rounds.
Halfway through the squares now.
It's a strike of luck that the pattern is both quite easy and forgiving of the occasional mistake. I've progressed enough to make sense of the more technical suggestions made above.
Not sure where things are at now, I feel like I've gotten faster, and I sincerely hope so. Initially, one square was taking me 1.5 hrs - and there are 49 of them...
Aiming to finish this project by the end of June, which means I need to be more focused and consistent with my output.
