Coronation of King Charles III

As a commonwealth country .. Ahead of the coronation of King Charles the question is being asked – will Canada's currency be updated for the new monarch? Although it has been months since King Charles III assumed his new role as monarch, Canada has yet to update its currency to include images of the new sovereign

To be fair, England hasn’t either ?. The change will be gradual and done over a number of years beginning in the middle of next year. The current currency featuring QE2 will co-circulate and continue to be valid.

The question for me is whether Canada and other Commonwealth countries choose to replace Elizabeth with Charles or with another design, and/or if the role of the monarch becomes less prominent on the currency. But that’s probably for a different thread. I think the discussions over whether countries will abolish the monarchy or discussions around whether Charles needs to apologize for slavery and colonialism belong in a different thread.

I’m going to watch on TV because it’s a historic event, but do not plan to join in any of the viewing parties etc.

I think it’s up in the air about Canadian currency. I heard something last night about Charles interested in addressing slavery (Cdn news) but I was off to sleep. I’ll tune in for parts of it too.
 
I plan to watch parts of it. Likely will pass on the procession from the Palace to WA but may watch the actual ceremony inside. I still plan to drink coffee instead of tea.
 
I think Canada is a long way from abolishing the monarchy, just because it involves opening up the Constitution and no political party wants to touch that with a ten foot pole these days ... it's a slippery slope to a bunch of other changes to the Constitution. It would also involve getting buy in from all the individual provinces, and they can't agree on whether the sky is blue from one day to the next, so I just don't think the political will is there for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with the monarchy. I can see us moving away from having the monarch on the money ... at the moment I think the Queen is only on the $20 bill, but her profile is on the "heads" side of all the coins. I can absolutely see them replacing her on the $20 bill with a more Canadian image (however you define that) rather than with Charles. It will be a gradual process, though, and the bills featuring the Queen's image will remain in circulation for some time to come.

I will be watching the coronation. I have complicated feelings about the monarchy these days, but I am a sucker for the pomp and circumstance ... and the Brits do it so well! We were just in London in March and I took my nine-year-old to a number of the key sites, so it will have more meaning for them. They are excited to see the same places and see if they can recognize them!
 
I'll watch the highlights, maybe. I'm more interested in the family dynamics on display than the pomp and circumstances.
 
I've been watching lots of preliminary coverage, particularly on BBC World (because they know what they are talking about) and plan to be up to watch all the pomp and circumstance live. [I am old enough to remember watching the so-called "live" CBC film on a small black and white TV in 1953 :) ]

There will be lots of coverage of all the preliminary processions/arrivals, etc. as well as the procession afterward on many TV channels and streaming sites.

I'm hoping it won't rain but the rain in 1953 certainly didn't presage horrible things for Queen Elizabeth II so...

It starts at 2 am my time, so it is highly unlikely that I will watch. Will watch the highlights. I am sure there will be all day coverage on tv. I would have liked to watch it live though. Never seen a coronation of a king/queen.

And bonus that you have Martha McCallum anchoring - I'm 100% convinced she's a royalty fan from some of her previous anchoring and breadth of knowledge about not just the British RF but European royals in general. She's the best US broadcast journalist for royal events.
 
No, but I will certainly watch the highlights. I think my Cinqo de Mayo margaritas will knock me out.
 
I'll be watching until I fall over asleep. Then I'll resume watching on my recording tomorrow.
 
Will there be tiaras and beautiful gowns? That's all I care about in regards to the monarchy. :p
 
I'll be watching! There's no place near me to get scones and clotted cream. I'll have to make do with waffles and Yorkshire tea.
