Canadian Nationals 2019 Men Top 5 Prediction Poll

Who will make top 5?

Messing and Nguyen for sure. Sadovsky and Nadeau maybe. Not sure who the 5th would be, all I know is I will be surprised if Reynolds makes the top 5. The new rules are ill suited to him and he is way past his prime.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see Gogolev take it. Technically he's ahead of the rest, and nobody is quite *that* superior artistically now in Canada...

I'm hoping for a win from Messing, though I also want to see Nam do well. It would be great to see Kevin go out on a high.

I'm not so sure about Nam, but probably. Stephen is competing in seniors at his Nationals then. I would think he'd make top five or close to it. Definitely Keegan, and if Sadovsky and Nadeau have improved their consistency, they should make top 5 I would think. Phan is a good skater, and he has a chance to make top five too.

Since Stephen competed seniors last year (he came 10th), IIRC he's required to compete senior this year.
Nam seems to have skated a really good FP at the GTSA summer skate last week - it seems his jumps are more reliable again. Though he won overall, he was behind Keegan on PCS (who seems to have had a disaster of a skate, with almost the same TES in both SP and FP)

^^ Oh, thanks for the update. That's nice to hear about Nam. I hope Keegan regroups and re-locates his mojo. If Sadovsky and Nadeau mature with confidence and consistency, they could possibly begin to rival the field and each other. I guess we'll soon find out.

I would be surprised to see Gogolov take it in 2019. He's certainly being nurtured and favored as 'the next one' but a jump to National Champion would be a bit much in just a year. I do expert him to move up the rankings and possibly be on the podium.

He's still so young, and I think Skate Canada knows it it unwise to push him too hard.

Keegan is the favorite at this point I would say. I do hope to see some growth in him as a skater next season, however.

I could see Gogolev win it if he has a great skate, but IMO unlikely. He is still working on his consistency. And while artistically he might not be that below others with Chan retired his PCS will still likely be a lot lower than people like Messing since PCS is largely a pecking order/seniority thing anyway.

It he skates his 2 programs cleanly and to his potential he will win. As far as PCS he has good skating skills and his power and speed are growing week by week. He also should get top marks for choreo and transitions. The only mark which fairly will be lower would be interpretation and maybe performance . However landing everything is the question. If he has growing situations between now and nationals his training of the big moves will be severely limited or non-existent so he cannot be expected to skate to his potential and rightly so. He would still finish quite high though and maybe even podium. Fingers crossed the rest of his year goes well. I am really excited about Messing's programs and will be happy seeing them clean.

The performance/interpretation were very much improved in the new SP at least. Less obvious in the FS since it's a repeat.

He is still working on his consistency but I am sure it will come with experience. He is definitely improving on his PCS qualities, especialy his interpretation, but as I said PCS is largely a seniority and reputation thing, as much as genuine skating merit. However I am sure the CSA are high on him, so he wont be as disadvantaged in this as most young skaters coming up automatically are, atleaset in Canada.

??? I thought the SP was just refreshed and quads removed to make it Junior and the LP was new? Multiple quads in it as well so it will take some work to make it consistent.

PCS are not supposed to be seniority and reputation. They are broken down for a reason. Domestic CDn judges need to clean up their act. Have no problem with our international judges.

Of course not, but they are to a degree, including internationally. It is pretty obvious when looking at all the skaters and the PCS they get. The ISU dont help matters by telling judges they are in trouble if PC marks per category vary too much in order, which is silly when some skaters are much stronger in some PC areas and much weaker in another, and negates the whole purpose of the seperate categories.

My mistake. I was confused. I didn't see the post before and assumed you were talking about Joseph Phan because he's competing this week. I guess I was distracted while posting.

I actually really hope Stephen doesn't win. There is already starting to be too much hype around him and I would like the media to stay away as much as possible until he is age-eligible for senior internationals or at least closer to it.

I didn't vote for Roman originally, but I think he might have a better season than I expected, after seeing his ACI results. I'm a bit worried for Kevin now, also, after that competition. I don't think Gogolev is going to win Sr. Nats just yet. He could medal, but I can't see him beating Keegan or even Nam.

Stephen could only win Nationals if he's perfect and several other guys bomb. He's not going to get (nor should he) the components scores somebody like Keegan or Roman can get, so as long as they don't get blown out of the water technically they'll be ahead of him.
