AS: The Russian Team for the FS WC is finalized. Evgenia Medvedeva is going to Japan on the third quota; Elizaveta Tuktamysheva can now plan for the next season. Anatoly Samokhvalov comes to conclusion that during the past few days the heads of the Russian Figure Skating Federation where playing “Mafia”. On Wednesday all broke loose.

RFSF, while planning, thinking, rethinking the names on the team for the Worlds, decided to play out “Mafia”. “The innocent bystanders” turned out to be the world champion 2015, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, and her coach, Alexei Mishin. The Mafia won.

Although the question of what kind of deck of cards Mishin was handed, remains in suspense. I, as a witness of this drawl game, kept thinking if Mishin is truly an innocent bystander, or is he a commissar who wants to break through the Mafia and take two skaters to the Worlds – Sofia Samodurova and Tuktamysheva?

But then what role in this game played Medvedeva, a two-time world champion, and a holder for 2 silver medals at the Olympics?

Evgenia immediately (after the RCF) followed the line of an seasoned and pro-active player, by announcing that she would be happy if the 3rd spot was given to Tuktamysheva (* in an interview she said that Tuktamyshiva deserves the 3rd spot), the one who she just surpassed at the Russian Cup Finals. Few times I witnessed how some seasoned mafia boss would announce “I am mafia – so kill me”. But in the end he is the one on the winning end.

Although there was one more option, in which Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva would be able to still challenge each other in Saitama, but it could only happen if Mishin made a wrenching choice (a raw cut). But I really don’t know if the Federation voiced to Mishin an option to make this bloody cut himself (substitute Samodurova with Tuktamysheva). As in, you’re the coach – you decide, which athlete is in better condition, and we’ll support you.

Tuktamysheva at present is the best skater in the world for Mishin. In any other givens there would be no question for Mishin who to send to Japan. But the conditions for this choice were made quite tough.

Would Tuktamysheva’s medal prospects at the Worlds, one of the most desired championships in the world, be worth it to permanently hurt the feelings of the rising Samodurova? .. that little Sonya who just a year ago was crying from happiness simply because Mishin once praised her. .. the one who rightfully won her first adult competition right after transferring into seniors from juniors. … the one who is herself a wonderful and beautiful person.

Mishin obviously did not want to take the knife and cut off a piece from his own coach’s body. Tuktamysheva is already a World Champion, yet there are no strong indicators that she would become one again, while Samodurova has it all ahead of her, even if few believe that it can happen this world championship.

In regards to Medvedeva, it seems to me, that “up on top” they quickly gave her all the assurances. Although for some reason the Federation chose to wait to announce the verdict, which from the side looked cowardly and partially incompetent. None of it had any logic (a system).

If this supposed decision process was based on the analysis (evaluation) of Tuktamysheva’s and Medvedeva’s conditions, then it throws back a question: Why during the Russian Cup Finals the members of the Russian Figure Skating Federation did not attend any of their practices? And also I will not repeat the same, but why was the Media not allowed to watch the practices?

Medvedeva surpassed Tuktamysheva. (and if that was the condition) Then why was not the team announced right away? Were there doubts about the fairness of the marks? Or, it was not the marks, but the “athlete’s form” as a criteria? (if it is the later) Then why would Federation members, who made the decision, did not attend and watched the practices?

When everyone returned from Great Novgorod to Moscow and St. Petersburg, the voting of the Coaches’ Council started. (it was not a meeting) it was bunch of telephone calls. First of all, by far not all members of the Council are professionals in skating matters of Ladies singles; second not all of them even watched the Russian Cup Finals; third very few of them even watched substantially the practices of Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva.

And yet, the Coaches’ Council was voting on two names – Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva. The Council is an operation entity of the RFSF which makes the decision on the faith of the athletes this season, usually basing them on general assumptions. Without given-minute detailing.

After the vote, the Federation, who knew in advance of the actual decisions of the Coaches’ Council, decided to announce that “expanded list”, which included even Stanislava Konstantinova, which in reality was not even up for a consideration, and also Tuktamysheva, who clearly lost out to Medvedeva at the Cup Finals and in the Coaches’ Council vote.

I do know, that all these “innocent bystanders” where at their nerves’ ends, not knowing how to proceed with future training, and all because in this seasons 2018/19 game, the Mafia convincingly was winning. Then all was shaken up. The Team was announced. And the temperature inside the sphere is at a boiling point. (And the relationship within the sphere is tense to the limit.)

I thought her name was Sofia ?

I am not sure why everyone seems to be so surprised. Medvedeva messed up at the nationals, Tuktamysheva did not compete at the nationals. Everyone seems to think that the federation should ‘give’ it to Tuktamysheva because it is not her fault that she was ill, but the federation has always made it clear that the third spot for worlds is not based on the results from the nationals. They made sure that the skaters can have a skate off. Medvedeva beat Tuktamysheva, she is going to worlds. What’s on that that people don’t understand? Russian federation doesn’t function the same way as the US federation. Body of work? I don’t think I have ever heard that term used in Russian skating. After the nationals they choose the team for Europeans, and based at the results from the Europeans they either keep the team or swap the weakest link with someone else. And for that extra selection they use the Russian cup final. I agree that it sucks for Tuktamysheva because she had such great results at the beginning of the season, but that’s quite a while ago. The federation wants to send the skater who is more prepared now, at it seems that it is Medvedeva. And I am not saying it as Medvedeva’s fan, I don’t really have personal preferences between Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva, but after seeing Konstantinova underperform at the Europeans, it seemed to me it was pretty clear that whoever is better at the Russian cup would be going.

Medvedeva won the Russian Cup, which was held for a reason. She's a two-time world champion and an Olympic silver medalist, and has some leverage. Med's skating has not been great, and I would prefer to see Liza at the worlds. I think Tut would have a better chance to medal as well. But there is no scandal here.

This. I don’t get the conspiracy theories with Medvedeva ‘s selection. If she is in fact getting her footing again, she’s a much more well rounded skater with a solid technical arsenal. Tuk has a 3A and lutz over her and that’s it. Even with those jumps, Medvedeva has a 7-8 point pcs advantage over Liza on the international stage and if she’s clean with the 3 Sal 3 loop, a chance to clear 150 in the FS. She had a very solid showing at rcf. She beat Tuk overall even with 6-7 points wiped out from the combo mistake in the free. To be honest, I’m surprised anyone is surprised

Thank you for posting (and, I assume, translating) this, it's interesting! I'm not sure what to make of this line, though:

Mishin is truly an innocent bystander, or is he a commissar who wants to break through the Mafia and take two skaters to the Worlds – Sofia Samodurova and Tuktamysheva?

I'm not sure what a "commissar" is here, but I don't get why both things can't be true - why does he think it's not "innocent" for Mishin to want both his skaters to go to Worlds?

oy... pls don't tell me i misspelled "Sofia" somewhere... Samodurova's name is "sofia", sometimes it is "sonya". Tell me where it is and i'll fix it.

Sorry...I thought it might be the person doing the interview and wondered that they did not know her name. ha ha

No problems, i am bad at spelling. but yes, the name can be written as: "Sofia", "Sophia", "Sonya", "Sofa", "Sopha", "Sonka", "Sonechka". So in future articles any can be used.
