Alysa Liu cheer/fan thread

🤔

I hope that she was serious.

What does Eteri Tutberidze have to say?

And please tell me that someone left the cake out in the rain.

She ate the lava cake! :cheer:

Just once, though. She slept through breakfast every other day. :giggle:

Rumors about leaving the cake out in the rain remain unconfirmed.

🎂 ☔

Billboard in Oakland!

After watching many Olympic events for my first ‘screen time’ recap, I became quite invested in some of the storylines. Particularly how Alysa Liu’s (Oakland represent!) beautiful short program performance set her up for a chance at the podium. Turns out she would secure gold, and it was a great couple of days for team USA:
1. Alysa Liu during my favorite moment of her free skate: a carefree slide after finishing the technical aspects of the performance. @alysaxliu [...]
3. Alysa Liu’s now-iconic smile.
Okay I guess I’ll pin a comment about this process because people are confused and/or… upset? This particular series, “screen time” is a practice where I set up a screen or projection and use camera to photograph a live event or broadcast. I’ve explained this in the past but don’t go in depth every time I post something like this. I’m not trying to trick anybody! Most of my imagery is film photography, but this is one way I’ve enjoyed my art practice. Thank you for everybody who enjoys the work. Oh and never Ai.

Simon, a mixed media artist/filmmaker, also was inspired by Alysa’s FS:
This video is completely made out of paper

I did not plan to create a paper animation for the Winter Olympics, but then I saw Alysa Liu's performance and it changed my mind.
It just looks like she has so much fun doing what she does and it is extremely contagious.

Sadly I could not take as much time as I wanted, because I am gone for this week and it was a pretty spontaneous decision. I basically skipped last night just to finish it in time.

Figure skating is really a beautiful sport 🥰

The process:
Definitely my favorite performance at the Winter Olympics.

For this mixed media animation I printed out around 250 frames and edited each one by hand. Sadly, I couldn't take as much time for this one as I wanted, because I had to leave for a video shoot... I still think it turned out quite alright.

Thank you Alysa Liu, for this amazing performance. You seem to like what you are doing and that's just lovely to see. You got me very excited for figure skating. So, so inspiring!

ETA - in the comments of the 2nd video:

Can you tell me the frame rate please? We’re learning about temporal resolution and I’d love to share this with my physics students!
For sure! This one is 10fps like most animations I make. Say hi to your students from me! 🥰
ahh I was wondering that too! So its animated "on 3's", for the 30fps end result! So cool!

Re-posting this local news story here from the U.S. Women's news thread:
Local Bay area news story (includes video):
Alysa's friend met her at the airport and somehow got all of her luggage into a mini Cooper :

ETA from GSD:
Alysa should sit for a brain scan in the interests of science. Like a lot of you, I’ve been watching skating seriously for more than 30 years and I’ve never seen as nerveless a performer. Med in her heyday was good, so was Yuna, but eventually nerves got to them too. Hope Alysa stays the unicorn she is.

Does USFS finally have a star that can cross over to the non-figure skating world? And how epically will they completely mis-manage the opportunity to grow the sport in the US?!
That is already happening. I am seeing so many videos on social media from people who don't know anything about skating but they love Alysa.

There is one freaking guy on Tiktok who I think is a martial arts expert who is trying triple axels off the ice and is actually doing them (I don't say that lightly but he has got the technique down pat). However I think he would get a shock if he put skates on.

I would say that Alysa is the equivalent of T&D in the ability of a skater/s to generate interest in a sport so quickly.

Mural by Gustavo Zermeño Jr, a Venice, CA artist:
LA Times article (Feb. 26) about the mural:
"She's first-generation American, just like myself," Zermeño said. "So I feel like that tie, her going to UCLA, her stopping skating for awhile and then jumping back in and more being herself — you know, growing up in Venice, I feel like that's what kind of made me an artist. Venice allowed me to be myself, be wacky on the boardwalk, artists, performers, stuff like that.
"So I feel like there were a lot of connections beyond her just winning the gold medal. But ultimately, I think she just deserves her flowers, man. She accomplished something, and I feel like her personality is what's really garnering all this support from people."
Zermeño was driving to get dinner near his home earlier this week and noticed a wall he thought would be perfect for his Liu-inspired project outside the Coe's Glass & Mirror building at 15532 Crenshaw Blvd. It turned out that Zermeño casually knew the business owner, although Alex Lopez said he never realized his former next-door neighbor was a mural artist.
Still, Lopez approved the project immediately upon seeing samples of Zermeño's work and a digitally created version of his idea for the Liu painting.
"I mean, I probably should have gone up the chain of command and asked the landlord's permission, but I knew it was going to come out amazing," Lopez said. "I just said, 'Let's go for it.' The landlord came by this morning and loved the piece. He was really glad that we did it."

Oakland institution Fenton’s Creamery (featured at the end of Pixar’s Up if you don’t blink) has offered Alysa free ice cream for life. 😁 I hope she takes them up on it! https://www.facebook.com/1000646219...AVdJsAmn4FSjHxFbLl/?fs=e&mibextid=wwXIfr&fs=e

As someone who lives very close to Oakland (I always pass through on my commute) I hope they have a parade for her!!!
"Oakland pride never tasted so sweet. 🥇🍨✨" (Fenton's Creamery's Feb. 25th post):
On Saturday, we created a brand new flavor in honor of @alysaxliu… Alysa’s Gold.

This golden creation features crushed Golden Oreos folded into a rich caramel ice cream base with a caramel swirl. And yes, it’s absolutely delicious. 💛🍯🍪

We released it on Sunday, and our customers were thrilled to be the first to try it. The first scoops were enjoyed by Fentons regulars Jenne Scott and Rebe Williams, seated with our Master Blender Miguel Castillo. Also pictured are Scott Whidden and Tony Bellot, both retired Master Blenders, celebrating this special moment together.

We would love to host a homecoming celebration for Alysa and officially welcome her back in the sweetest way possible. The invitation stands, and we hope she’ll come enjoy her new flavor with the community that is so proud of her.

Ice cream for life. Seriously. 🍦💙

The Alysa story is so fascinating to compare with Kwan's story. First-gen Chinese-American skaters with such different personalities and different family dynamics. I also wonder if being of different generations has impact. Alysa did bust out of the constrained world of figure skating and came back to it with clear ideas of what she wanted from the sport. Kwan had a much more measured approach to life outside of skating.

I am glad that skaters have a model, in Alysa and her family and coaches, of how to work with natural talent in a sustainable way!

Forgot to cross-post here from the Today Show thread in TV Alerts... Alysa is scheduled to appear tomorrow (March 2) between 7:00-9:00 am ET in my online listings. I am assuming she will be in the Today Show's NYC studio on Monday morning (having traveled from Boston).

ETA - the LA mural is finished!
