Alina Zagitova: “I would never reach this level of success if not for my family”
https://sport.business-gazeta.ru/news/238149

Z: I won the Gold medal at the Olympics, and received a lot of attention, but my life has not changed. I am the same now as I was before the Olympics. Although, during the time period between Olympics to this year’s World Championship, I gained a lot of experience. It was hard, but now I see it was just what I needed to go through to win at the Worlds this year.

I liked standing on a podium and to receive medals ever since I was a kid. For that reason I can endure hard days of training, and when stand up on a podium with good results, it gives me a feeling that I can get even better results. It is a big motivation for me. There are many situations in which you can not solve a problem easily, or when you can not solve it well, even if you know the right path.

From early childhood my parents always taught me “you can’t catch a fish without making an effort” (no pain, no gain?). I always held that in mind. Of course I would not be where I am if not for my family. If you want to accomplish something, start believing in yourself, and then your dreams will happen.

(in my free time) I paint artwork, manage social media and play with my very loved dog Masaru. But right now I do not have a full vacation. I can’t even imagine my life without figure skating. I am living my life full of figure skating. It is important to progress and I want to show that I can skate my programmes flawlessly like in 2017/2018, to skate really well, and to make audience happy.

I think someone should tell her that sometimes one can’t catch fish even when making lots of effort...especially when there is only one piece of fish which everyone wants.

One huge piece of fish every 4 years; 1 big one once a year, and a whole bunch of minnows... It all depends on what you consider a "fish" and what size you want... .. ;)

I am curious about Alina's art. She seems like an introverted and sensitive girl, and probably expresses herself really well through painting.

I don’t think that after being such a successful fisher girl and having caught the big ones, she would be happy with a tiny little minnows... the expectations have moved now, and it is only the big ones that count.

That's cute, thank you. Although I am puzzled by Alina's large dog wearing a dress/tutu. What the heck? https://www.instagram.com/p/BwKNnq7pEqC/
From @Tinami Amori 's translation of this interview

Urgant: ok, the dress. i get that it is there for a reason… (shows foto of Alina in DQ dress). Please do tell, how does one chooses a fashion for a dog’s dress?

Alina: first I tell you how I chose the breed akita. While training in Japan, where we were staying, there was a magazine with a photo of a beautiful akita. My dress was on the hanger above it, and it came to mind that if I have a dog like this it would be cool to put it in a dress.

She loves her dog.:D

Olga Ermolina herself made that costume for Masaru! I probaby got the name wrong, but she is the designer who makes all of Alina's costumes.

Forgive my wording, my friends tell me that in US must have written by doctors assessment for a service dog. What is rules for service animal in Russia? The whole this, while cute, seems odd

Really not a fan of dressing up larger dogs. But to each their own. I don't think the pup is a service animal. Just a pet Alina loves. I don't see the relationship as strange. Zagitova's life is very different from a typical 16 year old, and even a typical 16 year old skater. It's good for her to have a stable and loving relationship in her life.

I am not a fan of using dogs of any size as dress-up dolls. But there is purpose clothing to keep them warm. The shape of such clothing is the same as Masaru's dress, only with a "skirt" which does not hinders dog's comfort anymore than any typical dog's winter clothing. Masaru dress up fortunately is not a frequent event.

Yes. I very much agree that having a pet is very helpful. I thought I read it was her service dog. Glad I misread that.

Masaru does not need winter apparel to keep her warm! Akitas are cold-weather hunting dogs; they have very thick undercoat in addition to their obviously fluffy outer coat. Putting a little peace of fabric on top of that coat ain't gonna make any difference. :p

But I get it, when a girl brings a dog to a skating event, both might as well be nicely dressed. :cheer2:

I think Alina or maybe even one of the posters here discussed how the dog provides emotional support. Which of course she does! In any case, I am really glad Zag has this pup. It probably was a step towards adulthood as well, having to take care of someone else.

Thank you! Sorry for the confusion. For some reason I got the names mixed up.

Yes - unless you cheat like my sister does. She likes to be able to take one of her HUGE Bullmastiffs on plane rides.....just because.
My family joke that I have never met a rule I didn't like. I will say this....if I was going to lie, it would not be on an airplane. Bad Karma!

I've read a few times where people think Alina has a strange and maybe weird attachment to her dog, and that really confuses me. I guess I don't think loving your pet is weird.

well, she has bit of "dog lady" vibe (as oppossed to cat lady). I don't recall any other figure skater talking so much about their pet. I myself have bunch of cats, but try not to bring them up in every conversation :D

But it is nice to know she has world outside of standing on podium. It may be very important for her in the coming seasons.

Oy.... you must have not read social media for Wagner/cat, Trusova/Tina, Duhamel/multiple, Trankovs/Dexter, Slutskaya/Barsik, Johnny W/"Son", Shibutanis/2 puppies, Davis/White/Belbin/multiples... etc....... etc..... etc.....

She is still 16. It is normal to love your pets and talk about them. The USFS did an article about skaters and their pets in Skating Magazine, where skaters professed their love for their pets. (A whole bunch of crazy dog/cat ladies and gentlemen in one issue :D)

Obviously, this dog is special to her. Even the Prime Minister of Japan was there when they gave her Masaru.

Interviewers probably bring it up since Masaru is now a celebrity in her own right. Masaru is also the face of Airweave which sponsors a lot of athletes.

Masaru is not just any dog. She was a gift from Japan's Akita Group. Like Mollymgr said, the prime minister of Japan was present. Alina talks about Masaru because people are invested in the dog, and like to hear how she is doing. She has lots of other pets (Alina seems to love animals) but doesn't talk nearly as much about the others. Not sure why people are twisting this into something that it's not.

Don’t think anyone is twisting things. Someone posted before that the dog was for Alina’s emotional. Everyone agree it’s a good thing for her to have. It’s unusual for dogs to be on ice in ice shows. I thought I read it was her service dog so was curious how rules are on Russia for service dog. But it’s not service dog. It’s a pet dog that travels and is an ice show dog.
