You have no idea how it grieves me to have to quote a Fox News tweet on the subject:

Four members of the U.S. Olympic team say they won't be going to the White House. Adam Rippon, Lindsey Vonn, Gus Kenworthy and Nathan Chen will be skipping the decades-old tradition. What do you think?

It's his right and choice, but i think he is under "peer-pressure" given his surroundings. The Left can be and are nasty, voicy, vindictive and violent, especially in States like California. If he accepted and went, i would not be surprised if his car was egged, or if he would received threats, or some kind of negativity from other skaters/parents/people in person or on social media.

In U.S. politics, both the left and the right can certainly be "nasty, voicy, vindictive and violent." ;)

To clarify (eta: because I believe this is "old news" and this thread title's wording is therefore inaccurate): Nathan Chen was asked if he would go to the White House with the Olympic team back in September 2017 during the Team USA media summit in Park City, Utah, and a USA Today article reported that he would not (but no direct quote that I could find). AFAIK, he has not addressed the subject directly since then (unlike Rippon, Kenworthy and Vonn who have all been asked the question repeatedly).

This brief Associated Press article says the White House visit is scheduled for April 27th: https://www.apnews.com/070821078601413f9d6fcab9c99b3771/Team-USA-confirms-April-visit-to-White-House

The Stars on Ice tour has a show in Pittsburgh the evening of April 27th.

No. The piece of sh*t in the White House has made it very clear that he views people like Nathan - the son of *gasp* immigrants! - as lesser humans than white Americans. Nathan's a very intelligent young man - why are you trying to infantilise him by suggesting he's incapable of making this decision himself? (I know why - because he has differing views to you.)

As for threats and violence - the Trumpster morons like you are the ones with the guns, the ones bullying minor children on social media because they've decided they don't like being murdered, the ones marching with Nazi flags and so on...

The only pieces of shit and morons that i see are lefties like you, who do not believe in freedom of speech and opposing views. Your concept of democracy and diversity is a fake. 2nd Am. is our civil right... we need guns to defend ourselves from "takers" and criminals that your kind is willing to protect and waist money on at the expense of legal citizens.

 Freedom of speech? Rather rich coming from right-wing pricks who are busy claiming that protesters need to sit down and shut up! Seems you think the second amendment is more important than the first!

Bullshit you need guns. You don't need the fcuking guns. Funny how America is the only country in the world with this problem and you're so dumb you can't even see the wood for the trees. So up your own arse that you think America is the only country in the world with social issues. Newsflash: there aren't mass shootings like yours in other CIVILISED countries. I'll give you one guess as to why, but since you side with the psycho ammosexuals, you'll guess wrong.

I am not guessing anything... i'll just state a fact: any one who goes nuts like you over laws in another country across two oceans a) needs medication, b) even with medication will be on welfare all her life, and thus the political convictions and resentment of success, like Trump has.

 I earn $62,000 a year and have never drawn welfare in my life.

And the person who needs to be on medication is the one who thinks their right to own a gun outweighs everyone else's right to live.

But we're off-topic. The topic is admiring Nathan for being thoughtful and backing his convictions.

Tim Thomas, Bruins goalie, refused to go to the White House after their Stanley Cup win, because he wanted to protest "government overreach" blabla.

Next playoff game against the Capitals, fans had huge cutouts of Obama's face to taunt him lol

I said then that I wish athletes could sometimes put politics aside and try to make sports a unifying movement. Because this changes absolutely nobody's opinion, it just gives "the other side" reason more emotional fuel. It would be rather hypocritical of me to change opinion now just because the ball is in the other court.

That said, Tim Thomas and Nathan Chen are adults and free to do as their wish.

Wow.. that went off the rails mid page 1 there... Anyhow, everyone is free to do as they wish.. If this is what Nathan wants to do, good for him.. Just like if he decided he wanted to go, then good for him too.. This left vs. right talk is out of hand; there are plenty of us (the majority actually) that are in the middle and just want common sense $hit to get DONE.. Off soapbox and rant.. This off seasons going to be fun!:rolleyes::biggrinbo:biggrinbo:biggrinbo

I also think that Tinami Amori should take a scientifically determined random sample of those who consider themselves to part of the left to determine what their socioeconomic characteristics are. But then again, I doubt that he/she would be capable of doing that nor tolerating the realistic results.

I think that if the ones invited would realize it is a traditional invitation to the White House to receive public recognition from the national governing body for representing the USA at the Olympics, they might understand this has little to do with who is serving in the government. It is the United States formally recognizing their representatives for their achievements. It is hard for me to understand how the invitation would be turned-down when looked at in this light - scheduling conflicts for work or family aside, of course.

All those athletes who made the choice not to go to the White House have made the right decision. Why would anyone want to visit a president who is openly racist and has zero tolerance for anyone who isn't white.

He is disgusting. #bewareofthebluewave

Well, in this setting, it would force the racist and intolerant people serving to openly thank and recognize the achievements of a diverse group - in a very public way. It forces them to recognize and say, "Thank you."

A pic of Adam kissing Trumpie on the cheek would be priceless :)

I’m proud of all the athletes who decided to express their first amendment rights and refuse a White House visit. It would be utterly repugnant for Adam and Nathan to force themselves to smile, while they get used for a “I’m not a bigot, look at these minorities” photo op. These are both citizens of the US. They have a constitutional right to protest.

Thankfully, I can see any of these nasty responses against Nathan’s decision because I’ve blocked them all long ago.

Aw, chucks. Ashley won’t get to turn down the invite...’cause she didn’t get an invite. Boo hoo.

The idea that Nathan Chen (or Adam, for that matter) is some left-wing radical is laughable. He is as middle of the road as those who keep telling themselves they are middle of the road. He just has certain principals he abides by.
