2026 Olys Team Event PBP Day 3 - When Your Bum Hits the Ice and Your Legs In the Sky - That's Errore!

I still can’t believe how far Ryuchi Kihara has come. I remember being on this forum and hearing about some “random” Japanese male skater they found for World medalist Narumi Takahashi back in 2013. The feeling was that they found someone for her due to Mervin not being a Japanese citizen and Japan thinking about the team event. 13 years later, here we are.

You just never know how life will turn out.

I really think team Japan really deserves team gold considering how strong they are in 3 of the four disciplines.
Granted US is very strong too.
Here's where I come down on this (setting aside my obvious Team USA homerism)... The USA was able to soundly qualify at least 2 entries in all four disciplines at Worlds last year while Japan only qualified multiple entries at Worlds in Men & Women & had to go to the OQE to get a 2nd spot in Pairs and couldn't manage to earn even a single Dance entry. Additionally, the US had a full field of 15 dance teams at Nationals and 10 pairs teams; that's in addition to full fields of 18 skaters each in Men & Women. If I'm looking at the overall strength & depth of figure skating between the two nations, the USA has Japan beat handily. Japan has managed to get strong with one team in Pairs and they have a second team that still struggles to skate clean outside of Japan, though they are improving. But I really come back to Dance and I just cannot get behind Japan winning TE gold when their dance team & both their pairs & dance programs lag soooo far behind the USA.

Last olympic team event by the time we got to the very last segment there was such a point spread that there was no possible result that would change the overall outcome. That was kinda boring. This team event there is actually drama and uncertainty!

(The point structure still needs to be overhauled imo)

Can`t quite figure it. US came in with 1 point. K/O added a point by not finishing last. So if Ilia and Amber are 9`s it`s tied. Is that right?

The US men program is not much other than Ilia, so the US men is closer to the Japanese pairs in terms of depth.
Anyway, I'm fine for either of them winning. :)

Oh, I wanted to add in response to one of the earlier posts, yes, Pereira & Michaud are more solid that Danny & Ellie on the high risk jump/throw elements. But Ellie's gorgeous flexibility & positions combined with Danny's strength make their lifts world class and this--combined with a beautiful death spiral position and good spins--can rack up a lot of points on elements we often don't pay enough attention to. It's why they've stayed ahead of the U.S. field even when the throws are so dicey.

And the US loses the tiebreaker in that scenario. The USA needs to win at least one of the last two segments.

Gah - Amber fluff. I just can't with her whole "I'm sooooo unique because I play Magic: The Gathering"... No, that makes her like a ton of other Gen Zers.

Isn't that how the movie ends, with a dead Russell Crowe being carried away by the other gladiators?
Oh I guess I was thinking to literally that the man is the gladiator and the woman is Caesar’s daughter from the movie who he had a child with
Thanks!

Sure, right now, but the US men have won 2 out of the last 4 Olympic gold medals and their relative strength has remained at a fairly high level over the last decade and a half - especially when Nathan & Vincent were competing. Right now, it's at a low point but we still managed to qualify 3 men outright for the Olympics, just like Japan.

So, have I got it right?

If Japan wins men's and women's and the US skaters are second in each segment, Japan will win on the tiebreak
If the US skaters win both singles segments, with Japan's skaters second, the US wins gold, Japan silver.
If the Japanese and US skaters split the singles segments, the US wins gold, Japan silver.

I can't believe every pair skated so well. Terrified what that means for the women... :yikes:
I'm more terrified for the Men.
Here's where I come down on this (setting aside my obvious Team USA homerism)...
Where I come down to is that the Olympics are no longer a crowning of that quad's best skater(s) like it often was in the days of figures. This is how it should be.

Therefore, all that matters is who pulls it out on the day.

Does Amber think she's unique in this?
