2026 Olympics Team Event - Strategy, Predictions & Discussion

They really need to restructure the points system of this Team Event and make the FS count for more points because the way I'm doing the math (and going on assumptions of placements), there is no way USA still does not win if Ilia does the FS, even if JPN wins Womens and Pairs (and that one is not a given).
I think that all ten teams should do LPs/FDs. But, if they did, Japan definitely would lose a lot more points in the FD.

We've been over this in past Olympic cycles and I'm not sure there's any different way to restructure the points that would change the outcome for the medals. I've played around with various different methods suggested by others and almost always, the medals shake out the way they have in actuality.

Yeah, it doesn't really work if the goal is to create a system to allow a certain team to win/prevent an unliked team from winning.

The fact that the competition is SO tight this time I think means that all of the countries are putting more emphasis on the team event, and have learned more how the system works. I think the problem is this format is done only once every four years, and because of that, it has taken so much longer for an interesting competition to develop.

True. I do think that cutting the field in half doesn't work. Maybe there would be more movement if there were 6 teams in the FS/FD rather than 5.
Why six and not ten?

The goal is not to prevent any particular team from winning. The goal is to make the LP/FD count for as much as the SP/RD.

Also, it does take physical and mental energy to do the TE. I wish they would move it to the end of the figure skating schedule.

I am just over the moon that after 2 Olympics of pearl clutching and proclamations of Canada not qualifying even for the Team Final, Canada defies the odds again, delivers when it counts, with better than expected results, qualifies for the final and this time around even sits close to medal contention!!

Go Team Canada!!! :cheer2:

Can’t wait to be in Milano in a couple of days to cheer you on in person!! (last minute trip!!)

First Olympics nerves for Ilia. This makes me worry about Amber Glenn tomorrow. If she struggles with nerves similar to Ilia, she could finish 3rd or lower in the Women's FS (behind Italy or Canada or Georgia). And then Ilia winning the Free Skate may not be enough.

Also - what if Japan decides to go for Team Gold and send Yuma to do the Men's FS? Currently, Shun Sato is supposed to skate. But they could always change their minds with the points being so close. USA is projected to only have a 1 point advantage heading into the Women's FS/Men's FS.

But I'm still all in for TEAM JAPAN for the win!!!! 🇯🇵

I'd be in favor of using an "add up all the points" approach. I'm surprised the ISU is so keen on factored placements for the team event when they were so obsessed with getting rid of them for the individual events. Teams can flip-flop! The horror! That was the whole reason behind canning the scoring system for Code of Points.

I do think the US has the strongest overall team right now, on most days. US pairs are weak, but Japanese ice dance is abysmal. Scoring system aside, Japan is qualitatively better on a four-discipline basis only if the US blows either women's or men's singles (as it may well do).

I'm glad to see the top skaters / teams taking the team event seriously with the lineups for tomorrow.

I'd feel better with Alysa also doing the FS you know even if she's not sharp like she wasn't in the SP she will hold it together and keep the US in 2nd place. Nothing can be done with Pairs but K/O need to beat the Canadian team to give them just a bit of a edge going into the singles competition.

Me too! For every Ilia type score a Team has, they'll have a lower score to balance it all out.

Amber deserves it! Plus other than Kaori it’s not exactly murderer’s row in this field. It would be very odd if Amber weren’t skating one segment.
Amber absolutely has earned it. Between last season and this season, no skater has beaten Amber who wasn't American or Japanese, even when she had some errors. And she just won her third Nationals. Also, it seems likely that this is what Alysa wants and what she thinks is good for the team and for herself.

I just hope Ilia doesn't now think he needs to prove himself and go for 6 or 7 quads. He just needs to do enough to beat Sato if that is who is doing the FS though it might be Yuma again.

It's Sato. Lists are up. They can't be changed.

 The British ice dance judge again screws Canada. 4th in the free dance TE even without F/G in the mix! 🙃

It's Sato. I hope Ilia comes out fighting in the LP, like he did at the GP Final. He doesn't need to do seven quads, though. It's going to be a lot of pressure on him this time because the medal is bound to come down to the Men's long program. He looked nervous before the short today. He has had sooo many expectations on him, both internal and external.

Does Ilia’s placement in the short mean he won’t skate last in the team free?
I'm not sure how the start orders were determined for the TE FS/FD. They aren't based on WS since GuigFab are ranked higher than LajLag but skated before them today; and KamO are ranked higher than PerMich but skating 1st tomorrow while Gubanova is ranked higher than Gutmann but skating before her tomorrow; plus Nika's skating 1st even though he's ranked ahead of both Rizzo & Gogo, while Ilia's skating before Shun.
