2025 US Club & NQS Competitions

Shin/Nagy look really good. I hope they can have consistent performances this season, they've got the basics and great style.
They didn't get credit for the pairs spin and I do not know enough about pairs to know why lol, but yeah even though the free was rougher than the short (not just because the last lift came down early but just you can tell things are still gelling) they look good together. Plus they have citizenship that is real and not based on a hope and a dream.

I had to go back and re-watch it because I didn't catch it in real-time, but he lost his edge and re-positioned himself between the 1st & 2nd position in the spin.

The program itself is terrible. Why they are going with an anemic GMB for their FS with choreo that might as well have been done by Julie Marcotte (they paid Zimmerman & Fontana for this program!) is beyond me. They are better than this - their SP is far more interesting (they got their money's worth from John Kerr there). They do look good together, but they need to clean these errors up if they want to have a shot at the Olympic team or even being sent to Beijing to try & earn the 3rd spot.

Really enjoyed PerMich's FS - much better than their SP, which is also a pretty bland, generic music selection.

Decided to drive up to Aston for the Philly comp. I used to go every year pre-Covid, last year I went was 2022, so decided to go up for the Junior Women and Senior FS. OMG, the traffic - took me 2 hours (normally 1 hour 20 min) with construction messes everywhere. Thankfully the trip home tonight was uneventful. Anyway, random thoughts and observations...

Good job by Jessica Jurka winning Junior Women (she has landed 3A in practice, right?). Her jumps looked solid.

Sofia B is now with Malinina/Skorniakov. I hope they can help with her jump technique, her URs are going to kill her on the JGP. IMO she has a lot of potential. Not sure of her music...maybe Moonlight Sonata? I'm bad at music ID and I don't have Shazam, sorry! Last time I saw Sofia was at Legacy on Ice skating a tribute to her lost coach and training mates, so it was good to now see her happy and hanging out off the ice with other skaters.

Skylar Lautowa-Peguero had some jump difficulties but skated with a lot of speed, good skating skills, strong presentation, I think she got the highest PCS, well-deserved.

Lucius K landed 4T-3T, fell on 2nd 4T and turned out of the landing of his 3A. The jumps are pretty much there, but he needs to work on his skating skills and his spins...speed, positions, everything. Savary skated right after him and the difference was sizable. Unfortunately for Savary, he just doesn't have the jumps (doubled 4S, 3T instead of 4T, no 3Lz) to match his skating skills and musicality.

It's too bad Schizas couldn't stay in top 10 at Worlds to set Canada up to earn a second Oly spot. Daleman (i guess i missed that she is now working with Tammy Gambill) is showing flashes of her old self. Started off with great 3Lz and 3F, then popped a 3Lo and seemed to run out of gas in the 2nd half. Skating to Samson and Delilah (she did that previously, right?).

Higase-Chen started off strong with a good 3F-3T but also seemed to run out of gas in the 2nd half.

Juliana Barshay (another Malinina/Skorniakov skater) had a nice program to The Hunger Games soundtrack.

Clare Seo didn't have a coach here. Tammy was at the event for Logan and Gabby so I assume she is no longer Clare's coach (or maybe that was already posted here and i missed it). Clare is showing more maturity and a beautiful spiral that she held for several seconds, but the jumps just aren't there. :(

Thanks to the Nats scheduling and sending the Juniors out to the hinterlands, I probably won't see any Juniors in St. Louis, so glad I got to see some of them here.

At the other NQS comps comps this weekend...

Philly Summer Champs -
Jr Women - Jessica Jurka put up an impressive 181.19 total score with Skyler Lautowa-Peguero finishing 2nd with 170.06 and Angela Shao in 3rd with 168.76 & Sofia Bezkorovainaya finishing 4th with 168.47; Jurka struggled at Jr Cup, but this may move her up the JGP alternates list.

Jr Men - Nicholas Brooks isn't making a strong case for a JGP assignment with these scores hovering around 180.

Sr Men - Lucius Kazanecki struggled with his 4T here in both the SP and the FS - only 1 out of 3 attempts were successfully landed. But it's good for him to keep on going for it. Hopefully it's stronger by the JGP.

Sr Women - Gabby Daleman scored 169.55 to win, Logan Higase-Chen scored 164.08 to finish 2nd; which may put her in the mix for a JGP assignment, but still pretty far down the list, IMO.

DuPage FSC Open -
Jr Women - Jiaying Ellyse Johnson put up a whopping 183.28 to win. Like Jurka, she's got to be hoping this moves her up the JGP alternates list because she also struggled at Jr Cup.

Sr Women - Emilia Nemirovsky skated a blinder in the SP & scored 64.36 - we'll see how she does in the FS tomorrow, but I fully expect she'll be one of the 2 women assigned to JGP Varese based on her 5th place finish at Jr Cup.

Glacier Falls -
Jr Women - Annika Chao had another solid competition with a 174.55 to win Jr Group A. That's the sort of consistency that will likely earn her a JGP assignment. And in Jr Group B, Hannah Kim scored 172.38 to win, which may be enough to put her into the driver's seat for a JGP assignment should the top 6 women not perform well enough at their 1st JGP to earn a 2nd assignment.

Jr Men - great score for Ryan William Azadpour of 185.64 & much improved over Jr Cup. Not sure it's enough to get a JGP assignment, but may move him up the alternates list. Same with Louis Mallane whose score of 180.72 was a little lower than Jr Cup, but good consistency.

Sr Women - Mess for Maddie Schizas - she lost the FS to Amy Yang! Two falls with ! calls on both of her 3Lz attempts. Is she trying to re-work the Lutz technique?

Sr Men - Shinohara, Kapeikis & Xie all in the 207-210 range which isn't great, but also isn't terrible for the beginning of August, I suppose.

Taira Shinohara is such a gorgeous skater. His PCS being below Kapeikis is kind of hilarious, because I thought Kapeikis looked really stiff and awkward. Shinohara's glide and positions were just better. Xie is really nice to watch too. Mindra of course has stellar programs but those jumps...oof.

I think he's currently working through an injury sustained at Jr. Team Cup. Obviously, next week's Cranberry International is the last hope for all the junior men seeking a JGP.

Not necessarily. I would expect that the last hope rests upon how the men assigned to the first 4 JGPs do - if any of them medal then they're certainly going to get a 2nd assignment, which bumps other men down the priority list for the next available assignment.

This will be 3rd season for Samson and Delilah for Daleman. She did it in 2018/2019, and then again in 2021/2022.

Though both of those were somewhat abbreviated seasons for her I guess, but she competed internationally with it already in two different seasons. We don’t often see a three peat for programs.

Question about the NQS series: what is the minimum number of competitions that a skater needs to do? Is the score that determines who makes it to regionals an average of several scores? Are skaters allowed to drop lower scores from the tally?

Skaters can enter in up to 3 NQS comps. Best/highest score counts.

There isn't a "regionals" competition any longer - top 4 in each region advance to Sectionals, as well as the top 6 next-best scores across the entire section. There is, however, a Sectionals CTES min and a higher Nats CTES min for seniors.

Pairs & Ice Dance advance to a nationwide Finals, which is held in conjunction with one of the 3 Sectionals.

Is it the same for the Juv-Int dance, that the couple’s best score counts? So if they get a very good score in their first comp, they can skip the others?

While the entries are not listed yet (as of 8/14 5AM), they have listed participating skaters' names on their website (scroll down):

OK - now the entries are up!
ISP & international skaters skaters include:

Sr Men - Lucius Kazanecki
Jr Men - Patrick Blackwell, Aleksandr Fegan, Aaron Kulvatunyou THA (JGP debut at Bangkok next month)
Jr Women - Sofia Bezkorovainaya, Madison Chong

I feel like Lucius must live in a car and just travel from event to event. He seems to have done so many this summer.

Ashburn, VA is only 15-20 minutes from his home rink in Reston, VA. The Chesapeake competition is only 45 minutes away. The "Philadelphia" competition is 2.5 hours away, so, probably just far enough to get a hotel but not a necessity.
