IDI’s Artistic Director Douglas Webster, who moved to Dover-Foxcroft last fall, dreamt of creating a show that could bring people together for a dose of hilarity and fun to provide locals, and visitors coming to the area to view the eclipse, something extraordinary to experience over the weekend. Webster’s friend, nationally recognized coach and choreographer Stephanee Grosscup, suggested an alien, space cowboy, plastic ice show, with music relating to the eclipse, and well, the rest is history.

Just got out of the first SCOB show of the weekend. It was a 3 hour long show that's worth catching if you're anywhere near the Boston area this weekend (there are 2 more shows tonight and tomorrow), if for one highlight: Spencer Howe, Misha Mitrofanov, and others in skin-tight bodysuits during one group number.

The show has a Hollywood theme this year and was far more elaborate and produced than I remember it being last year. One of the more well-produced shows I've been to (the first half, at least; the second half fell off a bit). All the club's skaters, except Chan/Howe and the guest stars (Amber Glenn, Jason Brown) stuck to the Hollywood or TV theme, with purpose-made costumes and programs. (Here's looking at you, SOI, where everything looked randomly slapped together in recent years.)

Talking about costumes, they were amazingly elaborate. Unless the club and the show have huge sponsors, I imagine all this show attire and training must be extra expensive for all the skaters, on top of their normal lessons and programs? Many of the club's skaters, from toddlers to adults, came out at least twice for group numbers - so one set of dresses/costumes each. For example, a Star Wars group number had 2 dozen Princess Leias on the ice with flowing white dresses and spot-on hair buns, and 2 young male skaters duking it out with light sabers. There was also extensive use of props and mini-sets, customized jumbotron graphics, half a dozen people working the lights, and countless more backstage coordinating the show.

Besides the bodysuit eye candy, I enjoyed two ice theater routines which beautifully highlighted plenty of folks with varying developmental abilities who were clearly greatly enjoying performing and giving it all 110%.

Senior-level skaters who performed brief numbers included Efimova/Mitrofanov, Chan/Howe, Jimmy Ma, and Maxim Naumov. Matt Savoie was also shivering in the cold outside, helping scan everyone's tickets.

Amber's two numbers were introverted in nature, and came right against Jason Brown's exuberant, extroverted skating. Jason gave 100% in his "Impossible Dream" and Backstreet Boys numbers.

But, damn, those tight bodysuits that hide nothing as far as Howe and Mitrofanov are concerned. Nothing.
