2021-22 ISU Grand Prix assignments announced

Is it possible to reassign skaters to existing events and make those fields larger, if no federation steps up?

What about Stockholm? They must have the rink, but will they have the interest?

Why can't Australia host a GP?

If Usfsa hosts a second GP, will they get to add some of their skaters in each discipline?

You mean that COC only selected on American woman, one American man, and no pairs? Federations don't send people to the GP.
The various NGBs that put on GPs negotiate though.

And, after skaters are selected, their NGB sends them so this is really just word play. ;)

Of the US singles skaters, for women- only Karen, Bradie, and Starr are in the top 24 World standings, and only Alysa and Mariah join them on the 19-20 top 24 SB list. For men, only Nathan, Jason, and Camden are in top 24 WS, and those same 3 guys are the only ones in top 24 SB from 19-20. I don't think it would be sensible to expect more assignments for the US skaters than we got already. It is a triumph that we could get 2 spots for Vincent, Tomoki and Amber. Hopefully having a full-ish season will allow for some of the lower ranked (internationally) US skaters to pull up a bunch. Sub top-3 skaters from US, JPN, RUS, and CAN took a huge hit this past season with so few comps for WS standings and SB points. Worlds was the main avenue to gain WS points, which diversified the world standings (country-wise) quite a bit. It would be nice to see skaters like Audrey, Paige, Izzo, Naumov, Paniot, Torgashev, and Ma, among others, have a chance to improve their standings. Same for Chan/Howe, McBeath/Bartholomay, and Liu/O'Shea.

Not really. The GP events are scheduled tightly on competition days and for only two warm-up groups for each discipline. Adding skaters adds more time than contracted and scheduled.

Not really considering that there are restrictions on who gets assignments that have to be held to. Negotiations go on, but it still isn’t the same as USFSA sending skaters.

Why can't Australia host a GP?
Because the borders are shut, our own citizens struggle to get back in, and everyone, including our returning Olympians, has to do 14 days quarantine on entry. Not to mention the current internal lockdowns between states and the Delta variant being allowed to spin wildly out of control in Sydney.

I can't say I'm surprised a GP got cancelled - anyone who thought we were going to get a "normal" season this year has rocks in their head.

What happens to Bradie if there is no alternative for her?
There will be an alternative GP. It's really a matter of which feds are willing and able to step up to the plate. Some folks have mentioned Russia or the US and while I would be surprised to see any the other GP hosts offer (and Russian skating Twitter has already ruled out the RFSF for a 2nd GP), I suppose it is possible that the USFS or France might step up if none of the other non-GP feds are able. Travel restrictions being what they are, I think Canada and Japan are unlikely.

Boston could be a good option if the SCOB is interested and able, but that is also dependent on NBC because the USFS/NBC would need to provide the television feed. And, no, we wouldn't be relying upon the SCOB Vimeo livestream, lol!

Yep. https://www.dubaiicerink.com/

Isn't that what they are doing for the JGP?

On a different note, I find it interesting that USFS was only sending one Woman and one Men and no Pairs to CoC. Unless the list posted above is missing people.

I too feel that there will be a replacement GP somewhere. I too like the idea of Boston stepping up, though I won't make the trip.

Ideally a European country like Germany/Italy will be nice. Germany used to host a GP in the previous century.

Now my concern is about the Winter Olympics though. I hope China will not back out of it. It will cost them a lot of money if they back out, right?

Japan did a splendid job of hosting the Olympics, and the summer Olympics are much bigger than the winter ones. SonInam hoping that the 2022 Olympics will take place.
