2019-2020 Broadway/Musical/Operetta Rhythm Dance Suggestions

So it looks like the Dance Hall thread has been taken over by people making song suggestions for the RD in two years. There are some posters that seem apprehensive about this rhythm because they don't like Broadway/musicals. Well, I wanted to make a thread where we can gather together and make suggestions of pieces of music we'd love to see utilized for the RD in two season's time and hopefully some coaches/choreographers will be lurking out there so we don't end up with a season full of POTO/West Side Story/Moulin Rouge/Les Miz/Miss Saigon.

I thought it'd be fun if not only do we link songs/pieces of music here but we say which teams we'd like to see tackle it on (I don't have any suggestions yet). I'll start with just a few (I'd tried keeping it to songs I think teams could actually dance to within the requirements of ice dance and would work best out-of-context):

Instead of Evita, I'd like to see someone tackle on Imelda Marcos in the David Byrne and Fatboy Slim-penned musical Here Lies Love

@Wyliefan suggested Piper and Paul tackle on Little Shop of Horrors, and I think that's such an awesome idea.

"Everything Taboo" from the Boy George penned musical Taboo about the new romantics scene of the early 1980s. Not sure which team I'd like to perform this but I think it'd be fun.

A good waltz choice would be "Dancing" from Hello Dolly! or a medley from Rodgers/Hammerstein's Cinderella among many other choices like the "Carousel Waltz" from Carousel (Shibs did that back in 2010-2011) or "Shall We Dance" from The King and I.

If teams want to go light-hearted and use sounds from the early 20th century, then Leonard Bernstein's On the Town would be an excellent choice. I know most people know the popular song "New York, New York" but I think there's a lot of fun pieces a team can use from the Miss Turnstyle Ballet. And if a team wants to go call "Candyman" there's a ton of material from that show about raunchy 1940s New York women who are picking up the sailors because they want to straight up have sex with them.

They can also use Cole Porter's Anything Goes.

The Overture from Bernstein's Wonderful Town would work as well.

I'd love it if a team could pull off Once on this Island.

"I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair" and "Honey Bun" from South Pacific would be fun songs for skaters to dance to.

If a team wants to use Hamilton, then I'd like to see one tackle on combining two of my favorite songs "Satisfied" and "Non-Stop".

I think "Put on a Happy Face" and "Honestly Sincere" from Bye Bye Birdie would work well for a RD.

Hair's "Let the Sunshine In".

Burt Bacharach's Promises, Promises has a few good pop sounding pieces teams could use: "Turkey Lurkey Time and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again.

I'll think of some more later.

Realistically, I think everyone's going to do POTO/Moulin Rouge/Les Mis/Miss Saigon/(Maybe) Chicago

Hubbell/Donahue need to capitalize on their chemistry and do Big Spender, if only because I think they're some of the only skaters that could actually pull that off. (And because I think seeing a Big Spender program from them would erase all memories of little kids skating to such a sexual song)

For Piper and Paul I want to see Sweeney Todd because it's wacky and funny. Little Shop of Horrors would also be good.

I'd like to see someone do Into the Woods because of the really interesting rhythms throughout many of the songs but in particular during the main theme. Maybe Hawayek/Baker or Parsons/Parsons?

For a sibling team Hamilton would also be fun because it's not necessarily romantic.

If there's going to be one, I'd love to see a Chicago program using Cell Block Tango. Maybe it would even work for next year's Tango Romantica? I think having the storyline of a program being the female skater explaining her reasons for murdering the male skater would certainly be an innovate concept - and funny in some ways.

Maybe instead of Sweet Charity to avoid the debate about whether the music is appropriate, why not just go all the way and do a song from a show that is explicitly about prostitutes (watch the choreography):

The Life.

I'm thinking of sexual/sensual songs since I'm trying to find ones that aren't "Big Spender" as I'm a bit "Big Spender[ed]" out but maybe in two years I'll be ready for it, especially if Hubbell does a mature rendition of it without pulling punches.

There's also The Wild Party that a mature, sensual team can tackle.

"Whatever Lola Wants from Damn Yankees! could work as well.

"A Call from the Vatican" from Nine is also really sexual. The video and audio quality is poor but you get a better sense of the full potential of the song from the original choreography/staging from 1982 than you do from the movie version.

As for the "Cell Block Tango", Bourne/Kraatz did it in 2002 and it got lukewarm reviews at the time because people think it missed the point of the Spanish OD rhythm. However, if a team were to go all out with the song and do it a bit more literally, I agree that it could really work as would "When You're Good to Mama".

I wasn't aware that Broadway/Musicals was going to be a rhythm (what exactly is the rhythm? that'll help dictate things a bit) but I'M ALL IN!!!

In the music we'd like people to use thread, I'd already suggested a few musicals.

Funny Girl (I'd mentioned that I'm surprised more people didn't use the instrumental overture when no lyrics were allowed)
Jersey Boys (though Cappellini/Lanotte used the beautiful, though badly edited, movie soundtrack version 'Cry For Me' as part of their SD in 16/17)
Book of Mormon (though many songs would likely have to be edited)
Newsies (either the Broadway or movie version. Though the singing is definitely better in the Broadway version, it'd be hilarious to see people skating to Christian Bale singing.)
Thoroughly Modern Millie (or anything done by Sutton Foster)

There are a lot of great musicals based on other material. American in Paris, Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages (basically any jukebox musical), everything Disney-related...

A lot of great musicals wouldn't quite be appropriate for skating, though. For example, I LOVE Avenue Q, but since It has songs like 'Everyone's A Little Bit Racist', 'The Internet Is For Porn' and 'You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You're Makin' Love)' it's not quite the right fit (crazy to think that a composer for both this and Book of Mormon went on to win oscars composing Frozen and Coco)

I do suspect we'll definitely see Moulin Rouge, since a Broadway version is expected to be opening in early 2019 (it's doing out of town tryouts this summer). The bright side is that skaters might use the then new versions of the songs, meaning a teeny bit of variety.

"Shall We Dance" is a polka. It could certainly work for ice dancing.

Many of the songs from She Loves Me are written in standard dance rhythms: waltz, foxtrot, rhumba, tango. I think this is also true of a lot of mid-20th-century musicals.

West Side Story has been used in ice dance before. We'll probably hear it again. Ditto My Fair Lady.

Any songs that have extended dance breaks in the show would be useful if you can find a recording of those sections, but often those songs are condensed on cast albums.

How has the ISU defined "Broadway musicals"? It's not really a genre of music other than it's music perfomed on stage by actors. I mean, musically, Avenue Q is nothing like Spring Awakening, or Carousel, or Hair, but they're all Broadway musicals.....

It does sound more like and OD theme than a rhythm/short dance theme.

If it doesn't have to be Broadway/West End musicals - and I see no reason why it should - I'd love to see skaters using musicals popular in their own countries.

With "Broadway muscals" they obviously mean musicals that have been/are performed on Broadway, since the theme is not merely Broadway musicals, but 'Broadway/Musical/Operettas', as the thread title says, so ' Broadway' is separate from other musicals. Further than that, skaters/coaches/choreographers are apparently free to choose the songs from any musicals or operettas that go with the prescribed rhythms (march/polka/foxtrott/waltz? - not sure about all the rhythms).

The theme is Broadway/Musicals/Operetta, not just Broadway musicals. Also, it's indeed not supposed to be a rhytm, but a theme. The rythms used can be waltz?/march/polka/foxtrott (don't know if I remember that correctly), but there won't be a compulsory pattern.

Unless they're planning to bring back the CD, that's horrible.

Which is what I said in my post.

The point still stands, that "Broadway musicals" is not a distinct musical genre of its own. It would have made more sense to say "[prescribed rhythms] drawn for musicals and operettas" or something like that.

+5000 GOE to the first skater(s) that do a program to "Schadenfreude" from Avenue Q. Check the lyrics to see why.

It seems like the theme is Broadway/Operetta/Musical but the rhythms still need to be Foxtrot/March/Polka/Blues/Quickstep. That will narrow down a lot of choices we've all come up with.

I'd want to throw things at anyone who tried but you could artificially stick a March over a lot of numbers.

I still hate the lack of pattern.

Every Montreal team in 2015-2016 season did this. Throw things at Marie-France!

This was exactly what I was referring to :p I'd love to get some elegant old school Putting On The Ritz Quicksteps but could definitely see a bunch of weird March mixes instead

Are there going to be a lot of men in tails pretending to be Fred Astaire?

I hate men in tails pretending to be Fred Astaire.

"Summertime" could make a great blues number, but Porgy and Bess is an opera and operas aren't allowed.

"Shall We Dance" from The King and I is a polka, and I fear there may be as many versions of that as there will be men in tails pretending to be Fred Astaire.

My guess is operettas will be mostly ignored (thus breaking my heart when no one marches to "Stout-Hearted Men,") and there will be very little variety and entirely too many men in tails pretending to be Fred Astaire.

Hairspray (one of the few movies where the remake was better than the original) has several usuable songs as well.
BLASPHEMY!!! I absolutely HATED the remake. The original is MILES ahead of the remake.

For just plain 'musicals' I'd love to see something like the absolutely horribly amazing Grease 2. Or the awesome That Thing You Do.

And someone mentioned My Fair Lady - that is having a Broadway revival this year as well, so wouldn't be surprised to see it being used (unless the revival fails). It's in previews now and is officially opening mid-April.

There's some new shows opening this year on Broadway that could be successful and have great songs. 'Mean Girls' is in previews and has its official opening in early April. A revival of Carousel is also in previews right now. A try-out for a musical version of Pretty Woman is happening this year, as is a musical version of King Kong

There's a musical with the music of Donna Summer, another with the music of Cher, one with the music of The Go-Gos, one with the music of The Temptations.

And that's not even counting new stuff/revivals that's just in the works (without official dates) that could be hits before 2019/2020:
- Beaches
- Beetlejuice
- Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
- The Bodyguard
- Bombshell (based on the fake musical for the show Smash!)
- Damn Yankees
- Diner (new musical with music by Sheryl Crow)
- Dreamgirls
- Gypsy
- Josephine (about Josephine Baker)
- Kiss Me Kate
- Magic Mike (based, of course, on the movies)
- Piece of My Heart: The Bert Berns Story (based on the songbook of hit-maker Bert Berns)
- Roman Holiday
- Soul Train (based, of course on Don Cornelius)
- Tootsie
- Top Hat (based on the Fred Astaire film)
- A Britney Spears musical
- A Pat Benetar musical

Any one of these new shows or revivals could be absolutely fantastic for skating to. We'll just have to see how it goes!

I was hoping for an edit of Carnaval del Barrio from In the Heights since it would be audience friendly but it wouldn't fit into Foxtrot/March/Polka/Blues/Quickstep rhythms.

Are the rhythms fully set yet? Waltzes aren't too hard to find.

I Feel Pretty from West Side Story and What Do You Do with a B.A. in English :p are both 3/4 time

Familiar (and overused) classics like Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow are operettas so there's probably at least a polka and a waltz in them, e.g. Mein Herr Marquis.

And Bernstein's Candide is an operetta too! Glitter and Be Gay is pretty popular and parts of it are polka-ish.

Sweet Charity's I'm a Brass Band is a pretty good march.

Off on a whacky note, anyone know if Weird Al's UHF has a polka in it? :D

It may be an opera but it's considered "Broadway" as Broadway was where it officially debuted (after a Boston try-out) and Broadway people sure claim it as one of their own. It's one of those shows that is called a "musical" or an "opera" depending on where it's performing.

I agree with Sweeney Todd for G/P.

I like Xanadu for G/P and H/D.

Addams Family Musical

After having seen this, I've always wanted someone to dance to Sunset Boulevard. And it doesn't just have to be lyrical, there's so much to use from.

I was thinking of If/Then, but the profanity might be a problem
Merrily We Roll Along- Bernadette Peter's singing 'Not a Day Goes By never fails to get to me.
