I don't think anyone is copying anyone. We're just noticing design similarities.
Odd, I rarely tend to look at summer medals but London 2012 is really nice. Shows strength but with a warmer texture like polished stone vs the harsh texture of Korea.

I did not know about the river-rocks concept, but when i saw the design it looked like a good solid object without sharp edges to carry in your fist at night.

Plus the medals have a feel of a cast iron mold, very authentic.

I always liked the idea that the Vancouver medals were unique - no two alike - that is difficult design element to incorporate with the idea that all the medals will be the same size, general shape and weight. Personally I think the Nagano medals are still the gold standard - they really stand out with their dark lacquer section on both sides.

I wanted to love Nagano's medals, Japan has a lot of beautiful art and craft. But for me exactly the lacquer sections, dark and color enamel, made them look like tourist souvenir pins (imho of course..).

The texture of the medal itself is modern and rather interesting, but the rings are either too small, or not interesting. Rings look like key-chain rings and are lost against the back ground. With a different ring design, it can look very good.

If they oxidize or “rust” the metal of the rings (and make them slightly bigger in volume), it will create a contract yet still preserve the metal type and industrial modern theme. It is a very popular technique lately for high-end modernist jewelry and sculptures.

I overall think that the Pyeongchang medals are MEH. They kinda looked like they have scratched across but I like them better than the Vancouver (looked too bent), Torino (Donuts ), and the Albertville (the crystal idea was good but there should have been more actual medal).

OMG I loved that! I wondered if there was a way for the medalists to have those wreaths "preserved".

The Vancouver medals were bent on purpose, to represent the ocean, as well as to look like a piece of drift wood - something that is common on the shores of British Columbia.
