Chuck Norris died Thursday. No cause has yet been disclosed, although he was rushed to the hospital for a medical emergency.

I remember him as more of a TV star than a movie star. I was first introduced to him on "Walker, Texas Ranger." I later saw him in a movie called "Sidekicks" that was pretty good; though his presence in it was really a glorified cameo, it was done well. I also remember him from those Total Gym commercials.

I still find those songs the perfect summer melodies. And I remember going to the record album section at Sears, Roebuck and Co. to buy the "One On One" soundtrack all of those years ago for their songs. This makes me sad but so appreciative that they lived.

Yes. I still think Kevin Spacey is a hell of an actor, even if he is a shit human being. And Xander was an integral part of Buffy. Brendon and the rest of the "Buffyverse" cast will always have a soft spot in my heart because I loved that show and Angel so much.

I watched Michael Tilson Thomas conduct the San Francisco Symphony many times. He was not tall, but the only male instrumental soloist taller than that I ever saw perform with him was Garrick Ohlsson, who lives in San Francisco and is well over six feet tall. My family and I referred to all the other male instrumental soloists who performed with him as being on "the short list."

Inevitably, when he returned to the same symphony four or five years later, the rethinking had become even more thorough, to the point where the entire meaning of the piece had shifted or been recalibrated. It was like watching an accumulation of genetic mutations lead to a whole new species.

The only flaw in that evolutionary metaphor is that, in Thomas’ world, mutations never became fixed. Everything was up for reappraisal. “What if we tried it this way instead?” was always a legitimate position in his mind, while “Nope, we’ve found the right tempo for that passage” was not.

As a listener, how do you track that kind of evolution without being there as a witness throughout the process? Every performance Thomas led represented that night’s particular combination of interpretive choices, a combination that would be subtly rethought 24 hours later to produce a different but equally valid reading. Nothing was ever set in stone.
