Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Well, I made it through half of Sinners (we are at my daughter’s and they bought it) and left when it became a horror movie. DH watched to the end. We thought the acting and cinematography were great but weren’t particularly moved or impressed. We’re still rooting for OBAA in my house….

Bugonia was one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen David Lynch films! Kudos to Emma Stone for changing things up all the time.

I know, right?! Arnold Schwarzenegger is almost 80 years old.

In teasing King Conan, Schwarzenegger told the crowd, “It’s a great story where Conan was 40 years king [as] king and he gets complacent, and now he gets forced out of the kingdom, slowly. Then there’s conflict, of course, and then he somehow comes back, and then there’s all kinds of madness and violence and magic and creatures. Now, of course, you have all the special effects, and the studio system has plenty of money to make those movies really big. So I’m looking forward to all of those projects.”

🤷🏻‍♀️

Today’s movie was “Sentimental Value”. My sister and I both loved it and hope it wins for best foreign film (although we haven’t seen the Secret Agent one yet). We really related to the relationship between the sisters.

Zootopia 2 is now on Disney+ so we watched it tonight. My kids were full on belly laughing at a few parts and the adults were pretty entertained too. Disney clearly put a lot of money into it, and it’s good fun.

I hope to see it today. I just hope I won’t fall asleep during the movie due to jet lag.

Today's movie was The Secret Agent, a Brazilian (?) film about the corruption and troubles in Brazil during the 70s. Probably an important movie, but neither my sister nor I liked it that much, and it was WAY too long. It's the only one of the best picture films I've actually disliked, with one more to go (seeing F1 on Sunday morning).

Interesting. The Secret Agent is my favorite of the 6 nominated films seen. Afterwards I couldn't tell you what it was about, but the vibe or something appealed to both DH and I.

Easily my most anticipated film of the year. Yes, I want to see it more than Avengers Doomsday (although I will probably go to both). The original Dune trilogy remains among my favorite reads, and I love what Villeneuve has done with it even if he didn't adhere to the book 100%.

I fully plan to get the premiere day off work so I can see both films - hopefully back to back if the times work out.

Bring on Dunesday! I’ll be IMAXed to the MAX!!!!!!! 😁

I’m looking forward to seeing Project Hail Mary this weekend. The “sneak peak” reviews look great! 😊

I really, really wish we had an IMAX theater around here. The closest one is about a four-hour drive from where I live. But yes, bring on Dunesday!

So I stayed home sick today and saw Anora. I didn't dislike it at all, surprised at all the hate this film gets. I thought the acting was wonderful all around. I thought it was a clever response to the Cinderella stories like Pretty Woman.

I thought the ending was ... weirdly optimistic? Like of course Anora is upset that Vanya didn't think it was an actual marriage, but maybe she and Igor can have a real connection? And she does come out of this richer and wiser.

I liked how it cleverly referenced "The Great" with the toosh/touche joke. And Heated Rivalry seemed to reference Anora by playing "All the Things She Said" in another club scene.

I think the best acting went to Yura Borisov and Mark Eydelshteyn. Vanya was such a little shit, and Eydelshteyn portrayed that perfectly.

Sick day movie marathon continues: I saw Conclave tonight after watching Anora.

I actually ... did not like this. I feel like it depended so heavily on the final twist. I felt like the way the characters spoke was so artificial and artful. And everyone was just a plot device. There were no real round characters for me to follow.

Ralph Fiennes was wonderful as usual, but other than the big twists, was there anything really interesting about this movie or the various cardinals? If I were a voter I would have voted Anora over Conclave. Know that's not popular but ...

I liked Anora a lot too, way more than Conclave. I am such an Anora and Igor shipper.

I saw One Battle After Another. I can see why it won editing, this is a quickly paced and entertaining movie despite being so darn long. I like this and Sinners about the same. I may prefer Sinners (it had more pacing issues for me) just because I think it fulfilled its themes better and I just like the characters more. I have not seen Hamnet yet, but Hamnet is literally made for me, I know I will love it.

Well I feel like the final scene was meant to be vaguely optimistic about Igora. Not in the sense that they'll be romantically involved, but that they might be friends. The final scene is so quiet compared to the entire movie, and Anora finally connects with someone in a genuine way.

Spider-Man Brand New Day trailer is finally here! WOOOO-WHO! :cheer2:

One of the first things I wondered when I saw this was what FSU’s resident Marvel fanatic @Buzz thought about it. 😆

I’m not sure what to think about this Peter Parker yet. Also, this looks like a lot of CGI - even for Marvel - was used.

I’m still totally going to see it, though. 👍
