What are you most looking forward to in Milan?
Prins: .....The most beautiful thing that can happen is when skaters perform perfection on the ice. Seeing that happen right before your eyes is truly amazing. I've experienced it three times, most recently at the European Championships in Sheffield with the French ice dancing couple Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron. When I saw that, I thought:
if I don't give this a 10, what else do they need to improve?”
van Gerwen: “I hope to experience it too....I once gave a 10 at the 2016 World Championships in Boston, to the American single skater Ashley Wagner. .....I'm looking forward to the competitions where I'm in action myself, which does require enormous focus and concentration. At the end of a competition day, my head is often full and I'm completely drained.”
What did your final preparations look like?
Van Gerwen: “You have to make sure you're fit. That means going to bed on time and eating well. Other than that, you mainly prepare mentally. Make sure you know the rules well. I also practice a lot with video clips of routines from previous competitions, just to train myself in scoring.”
Prins: "Last weekend, I rewatched all the routines from the Helsinki GP, including slow-motion footage, with my notes. What can we learn from that?"
