2026 Olys Team Event PBP Day 2 - Will It Be YAYmoz? Or GO!GO!lev?

La/La are at risk of the Gui/Fab trajectory. They have such speed, power, and precision in their foundational skating and steps. But they’re still lacking in connection, presentation, artistic perspective. If they don’t open up, if they don’t develop some real concept of their skating and what they want to convey and achieve, and if they don’t get compositionally better programs and aligned packaging, they’re going to be permanently slotted off the top step of podium as the cold athletic technicians.

Which would be a huge shame given their talent and theoretical ceiling. Maybe they’ll get better programs and attention in the coming quadrennial assuming many retirements.

I would maybe advocate they go to IAMO and work with Hubbel and Moir to work on some of the partnering stuff.

I’m not. The team could slip to bronze if he or Naumov skated.
I mean, I don't actually care what color medal the US gets and would be thrilled for Japan to get gold, but also, with Yuma not in the FS it's a bit more of a wildcard (although I'm guessing teams don't know the other teams' choices until they are all announced).

Also the idea of sitting through the "I am something but not nothing" FS causes death in my soul

As I said in the other thread, Sato has beaten Yuma in the FS every single time this season and has the higher SB.

Watched unspoiled on replay (could have woken up to watch the Free Dance live but wouldn't have seen the Men's so decided to keep my Sunday morning sleep in).

Thrilled by Kagiyama's 1st place. I have nothing against Mallinin, but don't get why his PCS was only 2 points below Yuma. A
Also glad Gogolev has come good at the right time and that Aymoz had a decent outing.

Free Dance - Much as I adore Guignard/Fabbri, I much prefered Lajoie/Lagha today. I know opinion is split, but that White Crow program just flies by every time. It is exquisite. I may be on my own in thinking splitting dance was the right call for Canada given their medal chances aren't that great, and L/L are well good enough for their segment.

Chock/Bates - I thought this was the best they've skated this program. Twizzles soooo sloooowww and careful though, and the long clapping break for a breather still annoys me. I think re-adding the red lining to the skirt has made it distracting again in a way the all black one did not. But it was definitely best of the night. Technical aside I personally prefered Canada but I'm okay with the result as is.

I will be thrilled if Italy stays in third and Rizzo gets a medal.

I never like it when someone wins by such a large margin. I didn’t like it with YuNa and I don’t like it now.

Start Orders for tomorrow are up!

KamO, Glenn & Malinin for the USA; MiuKih, Sakamoto & Sato for Japan; ConMac, Gutmann & Rizzo for Italy; Georgia & Canada were already known.
Amber's in the FS and Ilia's going for it YAY!! :respec: :cheer2::cheer::cheer2:

Thank you to everyone for PBP! With my nephew's little one over this week (she got 4 vaccines, 2 'booboos' as she calls them in each thigh 🥺) it's been a rough couple of days and near impossible for me to post!

Ilia wasn't at his best but he still did very well and he's a warrior! And in spite of the doubters, he's proven to be a real team player, come what may in the individual events - which I still think he's going to win! :kickass:

I LOVE Chock and Bates, let the haters hate! :p I still HATE that skirt though, it's almost like a third wheel out there with them! I still wish that they'd brought back their Snake Charmer FD but it is what it is. This FD has grown on me though as the season progressed and I really enjoy it a lot!

Can't wait for the Free Programs!

Watching Yuma on NBC right now. This is by far he's skated this SP all season.
Yuma's SP was exquisite. Divine. Love love Ilia but I'm not sure that he would have beaten Yuma in the SP even if he was on, rather than a bit tight like he was (as was Alysa the day before).

Yuma's step sequence was deserving of the perfect scores it got! :swoon:

Back to Ilia, he was a little off BUT this wasn't poor Nathan 2018 thank goodness! I think that he's going to shake off any nerves now and skate lights out moving forward!

I'm disappointed that Torgashev isn't getting the chance to skate tomorrow.

I’m not. The team could slip to bronze if he or Naumov skated.

I’m not disappointed either. For completely subjective, irrational, and petty reasons, I’m glad that Jason Brown will have one more Olympic team medal than Torgs (at least for the next quad), after how the latter has treated the former :2faced:

Team medals should go to team players 💅

I really like Yoshida/Morita, and I think their RD is terrific, but the FD is a snooze. I know they're supposed to show versatility and maturity, etc. etc. by being an antidote to insomnia doing something different than the RD, but they could have been dramatic with music that had drive to it, which plays to their strengths. They ran out of gas on this one, but I still wish they were competing in the individual event, too.

I think Davis/Smolkin's FD is a gem, and, while it had its bumps, I find myself watching her most of the time, unlike in the RD, where I watch them equally, and I'm catching him where he looks a bit hunchy and out-of-sorts.

I feel like White Crow is constrained for Lajoie/Lagha. Skate Canada made its bed by pushing Fournier Beaudy/Sorensen over them, when I think they should have been able to fight for the title. Dubreuil has been clear that she has a sweet spot for Fournier Beaudry, having trained her from an early age, and L/L are getting IAM's lesser material and attention. And i hate that shirt on him: the exploded ink bottle ombre is just too distracting, and it's like they've decided he will never have a shirt/jacket that doesn't make him look like he's been dressed from the teen shop at Macy's.

I know that the musical match to the elements is hit or miss for Guignard/Fabbri' FD, but I could watch them skate that program forever. They move me, unlike that disaster of a RD where I feel like they should head home in a mommy van.

Chock/Bates skate closely together. I'll give them that. They, like G/F and G/P could have used a mid-cycle Olympics. But I also don't feel like clearing the top out for Fear/Gibson is making me :cheer2: for the next generation.

I'm not sure if skating in Beijing as a first Olympics under pandemic conditions in the individual event would have been the same under-the-belt experience as skating in any other two Olympics, but while Gogolev and Schizas performed their best in their debuts in the TE, it was not the same pressure that Malinin was under, and he didn't do badly, like Chen and Chan, who was okay, but underperformed. (It was Kevin Reynolds who came within .29 of beating Plushenko in the TE FS.) The closest analogies for a skater who performed magic in their first Olympics are Yuna Kim, who had an entire country counting on her, and maybe Ilia Kulik in the 6.0 era; however neither was dominant for the entire quad leading up to the Olympics like Malinin, and, of course, there was no TE.

Yuma Kagiyama's SP was everything :swoon:

Prime time NBC showed a post team short program interview with Ilia. Boy was he classy. I’m so impressed. He said he had a great time out there his first time on Olympic Ice. He said the Team event is so fun. He is having a great time. Andrea tried to bait him on Yuma prevailing and Ilia said he was so happy for him and that Yuma is a great person and they push each other in the sport. Ilia was smiling, happy and very genuine.

Aww... I love that Ilia took part in his own FS music, just as I loved Katarina humming "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" at the beginning of her 1994 Oly LP and Starr skating to her own version of "One Moment In Time."
Same! Haters gonna hate, I LOVE Ilia's spoken word FS! That is his truth! ✨🤘🏼😎✨❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥✨

I also wonder if Ilia has something of what I read about long ago in a book about Russia when I was a kid? Back then I read that Russians have a real love for poetry with their history of Pushkin and many other great poets. Of course I'm sure that not all Russians do but I wonder if this is part of Ilia's makeup - or he's just into more American style rap and other spoken word style songs?

OT, but this also makes me think of the Jim Morrison character in The Doors movie.

At one point iirc he was asked by a reporter what he thought of journalists criticizing his work. Morrison (played by the late Val Kilmer) responded with 'I guess they just didn't understand'.

And I guess it's the same with skaters like Ilia and Alysa and their non-conformist aesthetics. Some just don't get it. And they'll never understand. 😎

I'm glad to hear that and hope that helps dampen the media attention on his unfortunate 50% of my potential comment about his Team Event performance
