My mom started watching Midsommer Murders because it was the first box that came up on Prime one day. Now she watches every British murder show she can. And while I didn't really become a serious skating fan till 2002, I remember making a point to watch Nationals in 98 because of the Olympics. I also watch a lot of trials I don't normally watch in an Oly year. I try to catch snowboarding, half-pipe, moguls, aerials. I even watch speed skating sometimes. The list of sports for summer is even longer. Also why people watch is important--I watched trampoline because someone from LSU made it. I also watch a lot of track because there's usually at least one person from LSU who makes it. I watched the f out of pole vaulting because of Duplantis. I'm sure lots of people for example from mini-Loena's high school are watching/will watch when they get home from school. Years ago, we had a student who made the beach volleyball finals in some major competition and most teachers streamed it in their classes.

Are you seriously arguing that Ashley's commentary is good for this group?

Or that someone like Mark Hanritty would be commentating over their heads?

Hilmer is so amazing - the dress, the face makeup, the non-English music. And then she jumps and spins in both directions. She’s the perfect DGAF package in one skater. I’m with Ashley in adoring her.

She may not be from the "cookie cutter" that most competitors come from but she puts herself out there and does it from her heart. She does some unique things in her programs and why not? She is a free spirit and figure skating could use some of that.

One thing they've started doing on the NBC broadcasts which I think is helpful is showing a still shot of the skaters boot when they land a jump and then showing what direction the blade should be in for a fully rotated jump. The announcers often talk about under rotations and they can impact the scores significantly, but it's not something that's easy for a "casual" viewer to see. I think those graphics do a good job of showing why a program that looks "clean" can score lower than expected.

I can just see Gracie rushing to the broadcasting booth and telling a startled Ashley and Adam, "Let me into this booth. I'll fly this airplane!" while seizing the controls.

You’d be surprised. My mom puts on random sports on peacock and casually watches while knitting. That’s actually how she started watching soccer.

I was going to say, I bet these first groups are watched by more casual fans that you think. Nothing prime time to watch, just pick something on an app to have as back ground.

What does everybody think of Loena 2.0?

I am a huge fan, and while she looks like Loena she reminds me of Gracie in lots of ways…big clean jumps, fast, but very inconsistent. I said this in another thread but I think she will go farther than any of the other Junior skaters we have currently.

I was sitting in an end nosebleed section not being particularly engaged, then Sonja jumps in two directions! Holy Moly! Give her all the points! Then she spins in two directions. Give her more points! An hour later, I'm still fangirling.
