Rob Reiner, who directed such beloved Hollywood classics as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me and When Harry Met Sally after starring in the trailblazing sitcom All in the Family, died Sunday along with his wife, Michele, in their Brentwood home, TMZ reported. He was 78. [...]
The Princess Bride (1987), Misery (1990), the Oscar best picture nominee A Few Good Men (1992), The American President (1995) and The Bucket List (2007) also were among Reiner’s 20-plus directing credits.
Reiner was also a co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment, the production company behind such films as City Slickers (1991), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Waiting for Guffman (1996), Miss Congeniality (2000), Best in Show (2000), Michael Clayton (2007) and Seinfeld, one of the most lucrative television properties of all time.
From the outset of his feature directorial career with This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Reiner seemed to reimagine Hollywood standards, creating and starring in the first mainstream mockumentary — a rock ’n’ roll satire so dead-on, film critic Roger Ebert called it “one of the funniest movies ever made.” From there, he would move seamlessly from comedy to drama, from fantasy to horror, as few directors ever have.
UPDATE: The Reiner family has issued a statement following the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, in their Los Angeles home:
"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."

Legendary Hollywood director-actor Rob Reiner and his wife were found dead inside the couple’s Brentwood home in an apparent homicide Sunday, KTLA has confirmed.
Medical personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department received a call at around 3:38 p.m. and responded to the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue for medical aid.
Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department told KTLA that firefighters found Rob, 78, and Michele, 68, inside the home suffering suffering from stab wounds.
The couple’s daughter was at the scene, though the suspect, possibly her brother, had left the area before police arrived.
Citing “multiple sources,” People reported that it was in fact the couple’s son, Nick, who killed his parents.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, has been taken into custody after deaths of the director-writer and his wife Michele, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The official confirmed the 32-year-old was in police custody on Monday. The official could not publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
Online jail records show Reiner was booked by Los Angeles police and remained in jail on Monday. It was not immediately clear what charges he would face. The online records showed a $4 million bail had been set.
Representatives for Reiner’s family did not immediately respond to a request for comment and it wasn’t immediately clear if Nick Reiner had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
ETA link to Reiner's NYT obituary:
Excerpts:
Mr. Reiner’s family was rooted in show business. His father, Carl Reiner, created “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” moving the family to Los Angeles from New York in the 1950s and at times drawing inspiration from his own family life into his scripts. His mother, Estelle Reiner, was an actress and a singer.

In 1971, Mr. Reiner married the actress Penny Marshall, who later co-starred in the sitcom “Laverne & Shirley” and became a film director herself. It was after they divorced and Mr. Reiner re-entered the dating world that he had the idea for a romantic comedy about whether men and women could truly be friends without sex getting in the way.
The idea drew the interest of the writer Nora Ephron, who interviewed Mr. Reiner about his dating life as she wrote the screenplay. Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, “When Harry Met Sally …” would become one of the most beloved and culturally enduring romantic comedies of all time.
While making the movie, Mr. Reiner was introduced by the movie’s director of photography to Michele Singer, a photographer from New York. They fell in love and married seven months later, in 1989. Mr. Reiner has said the romance led him to change the ending of the film. An earlier version ended with Harry and Sally walking away from each other.
Last year, as Mr. Reiner was preparing to shoot the sequel to “Spinal Tap,” he spoke to The New York Times about some of the things that were most important to him. The first things he mentioned were “my wife and kids.”
“That’s the most important to me,” he said. “There’s that joke, nobody on their death bed ever said, ‘I should have spent more time at the office.’ Nobody says that.”

How horrifying is it that a son would kill both of his parents. I know that Nick's had issues in the past, but it's still shocking. I loved so many of Rob Reiner's movies (Princess Bride is in my top 10 all time). RIP to them both.

How sad...........

I read in the news that Trump ascribed their cause of death to their democratic views and that they suffered from Trump Degen Syndrome?? How crude and thoughtless for a president to make such a statement about 2 very good, successful people who were brutally murdered.

... [Reiner] collaborated with son Nick, 32, on the 2015 semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which Nick co-wrote based on his struggles with drug addiction.
The film tells the story of 18-year-old addict Charlie Mills and his tensions with his parents — particularly his father, movie star and Congress hopeful David — over their harsh treatment of him while dealing with his addiction.

im honestly surprised they got him so quickly. all those years of being unhoused I assumed he would know how to be in the wind.

A quote from former POTUS Barack Obama:

Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.

THIS is how a real president speaks, not a reality TV version of one.

This TikTok offering was from a CBS news story about classmates Rob Reiner and Albert Brooks.

In this Aug. 15, 2010 "Sunday Morning" profile, actor, writer and director Rob Reiner talked with Russ Mitchell about starring in the classic sitcom "All in the Family," and directing such hits as "Stand By Me," "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally" and "A Few Good Men."

I only really knew Rob Reiner for one summer, in 1985, when we made Stand By Me. We only saw each other a handful of times in the last 40 years, and outside of those rare meetings, we only spoke a couple of times. Even though I haven’t spoken to him in years, I will miss him forever.

When I was turning 13, and realizing that my own father didn’t care about me, that my mother didn’t see me as a son, but as a thing she could put to work, Rob Reiner made me feel loved, valued, seen, and respected. He made sure I knew that I was important to him and his movie. He made sure I knew that he saw every actor he could for my role, and he chose me because he saw so much of Gordie in me. Back then, I didn’t know what that meant, only that he made me feel like I was enough.

When we shot the scene with Gordie and River at the body, he talked with me about how his own dad made him feel, created a safe place for me to feel all of Gordie’s (and my) emotions, and turn that into a performance that still resonates with audiences. In a way, in that movie, I was him and he was me and we were both Gordie LaChance. I was hoping that we would see each other next year, at something celebrating Stand By Me turning 40, so I could see him and properly thank him for everything he gave me — in my career, sure (it only exists because of Rob), but in my life, as well. If Rob hadn’t shown me unconditional affection and approval, I wouldn’t have known what I was missing at home. He was a big part of my coming of age in that way, too.

Live press conference: [link removed after it finished]

ETA - Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman: "I'm here to announce that our office will be filing charges against Nick Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents, actor-director Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner. These charges will be two counts of first-degree murder... No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty."

It includes a special circumstance for multiple murders, which makes it death penalty eligible.

Reiner also faces a special allegation of using “a dangerous and deadly weapon — that being a knife,” Hochman said.

I always forget California has the death penalty, but I can't imagine the Reiners would support the death penalty, which would only make a tragic situation even more tragic. I hope their son is convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with a chance to get clean, atone for his actions, and hopefully do some good in his remaining life.

NAH. Special circumstances probably won’t be pursued. And there’s probably going to be a plea deal, anyway.

Should the legal/courtroom part of this story be in the True Crime Thread? For example, we have the Utah v. Tyler Robinson (Kirk assassination) case discussion there right now.
