The Latest: Air India plane bound for London crashes with 242 passengers onboard

Air India says a London-bound flight crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport Thursday with 242 passengers and crew onboard.

The airline said flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed into a residential area near the airport in Ahmedabad, a northwestern city with a population of more than 5 million, five minutes after taking off at 1:38 p.m. local time.

The plane was bound for London Gatwick Airport and was carrying 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, Air India said.

Visuals on local television channels showed smoke billowing from the crash site.

Some of my niece's husband's family lives the area. They are ok. She and her husband live 4 hours away. She is flying tomorrow, with a layover in London - leaving from a different airport, but she said she's been getting texts checking on her

This is going to be an interesting investigation. Footage on social media basically shows the plane stalling out and slowly descending into the crash - no wild movements, no obvious smoke or failures. But the flaps are all in the wrong configuration and the gear is still down.

It's the first total hull loss of a 787.

I imagine it will take some time to establish the total loss of life in this one given there's likely deaths on the ground, too.

So sad! My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and RIP to those who lost their precious lives.

They interviewed the survivor Ramesh inthe hospital. He said 30 seconds after take off there was a loud noise and then the crash.

This is so horrific.

I feel for the survivor - that has to be extra traumatic to be the lone survivor. Also, there was apparently an Indian news outlet that showed a full, unredacted picture of his passport, so now he'll have to deal with that mess. I hope there is therapy, so much therapy, available to him.

The video of the lone survivor walking away is surreal. There have been very few instances of lone survivors. I hope he gets help.

I hope the British survivor doesn’t have access to social media right now. The horrific comments about his ethnicity shows that for some people there is no such thing as too low.

Experts are divided, but I like exit rows and will now gravitate toward exit row window v. aisle seats. Airlines will probably start charging more for them, I’m sure.

They have not figured out how the switches went into Off; they are supposed to be on. Neither pilot had turned them off, based on black box.

That's not what the ABC in Australia are reporting:

In the flight's final moments, one pilot was heard on the cockpit's voice recorder, asking the other pilot why he cut off the fuel.

The other pilot responded that he "did not do so".

When I saw the difference in seniority and experience between the captain and first officer, and the fact that the captain is an instructor with Air India, my heart just sank. I would bet good money that CRM issues are involved.

But if someone has actually turned off the fuel switches, that suggests a deliberate action.

Earlier I had seen a similar article on yt that pointed at the software. I can't find it now.
There was confusion in the software. It thought the plane was on ground even though it was 600 ft high.

I also watched articles from Australia and Ireland.

There is a lot of speculation right now, and we will not know the answers until the investigation is complete. It could take a year or longer. I think people are rushing to blame the pilots. The Irish pilot who was interviewed said it is unfair to the pilots to draw a conclusion this early, and it is highly unlikely that in one second a pilot could have turned off the fuel switch. He also refused to blame the maintenance because we don't know what really happened.

This is only a preliminary report. All of this is speculation. There is a temptation to blame Someone or Something- like
The pilot/Boeing/maintenance

I know people would like to get definite answers quickly but we will just have to wait patiently until all facts are known.

When something isn't "automatic", doesn't "move" itself "in any manner" and is "designed to be intentionally moved", it sounds to me like it's highly unlikely that it would fall victim to a software glitch because it doesn't sound like it's software dependent.

The fuel switches were “designed to be intentionally moved,” according to CNN safety analyst David Soucie, who said cases in which all fuel switches were turned off accidentally are “extremely rare.”

“Throughout the years, those switches have been improved to make sure that they cannot be accidentally moved and that they’re not automatic. They don’t move themselves in any manner,” Soucie said on Friday.

I would be careful about anything that comes up on YouTube. The below is from the article from CNN that you shared. When something isn't "automatic", doesn't "move" itself "in any manner" and is "designed to be intentionally moved", it sounds to me like it's highly unlikely that it would fall victim to a software glitch because it doesn't sound like it's software dependent.

The article I have been following on YouTube is a discussion by a pilot who is very objective. He does not draw any conclusions and always reminds people that this is only a preliminary report and we don’t have all the facts. We have to wait until All the facts are known.

You should not judge me based on your general opinion of you tube. I don’t believe everything I see on YouTube. I have enough intelligence to decide what makes sense and what does not.

I may have posted the cnn article initially after hearing the news. You don’t need to judge me on that either. When something big happens - accident/natural disaster/massshootings, etc. We do post the latest available news as the first step.
