2024 was so good for me with skating related event travel, but 2025 has been far too busy meaning barely enough time to keep up with results let alone travel for events. Promoted a rockstar on my team, but it meant doing double duty at work since the start of the year, and then my best friend flew in from Calgary to visit me this past weekend so I missed most of Worlds :(.

Planning to rectify that for next season! Thinking of possibly going to Skate America, then flying to Calgary the following weekend to visit best friend for a week, and then since I'm already out West, stop in Saskatoon for Skate Canada on the way back home to the GTA. And then will definitely hit up Canadians with it being so close to family in Ottawa. Bring on the Olympic season!

Mr. mic asked me why I haven't gone to a competition in awhile. Uh, money, which lately has gone to house stuff and family travel? Kids? Life in general? He asked if there were any competitions close this year. I said Saskatoon. He said that seemed doable  I expect an upcoming bathroom reno will make that plan not feasible, but I like the way he's thinking

January in cold Quebec doesn't seem like the time of year to enjoy an icy slush puppy but YEAH for them being a sponsor.

Looks like Canadians and the US Championships are the same week, so no rest for figure skating fans trying to keep up with both! :drama:

Just to clarify that Gatineau, Quebec is across the Ottawa River from Ottawa, ON.
It might be cold in January but, if it is, you could visit and perhaps even skate on the word's largest skating rink here - the Ridean Canal Skateway. You might even try a local delicacy - a BeaverTail :) I would personally prefer one of those (any flavour) to a slush puppie 😂

I'm sure it's a very nice facility that's more than adequately equipped to host the event. But it has a ridiculous name.

Only if it freezes enough though. In 2024 I think it was only open 12 days.

Who is going to turn away a sponsorship of such a facility, just because of their company name? Most cities or communities would not be able to afford that.

I didn't say they should have turned down the sponsorship - although there are companies and individuals that make donations without insisting that their name be splashed all over whatever facility or program they're supporting. I'm saying that I think it's a ridiculous name for an arena. That's all.

I think Slush Puppie is getting its money's worth on this thread alone. I think that is an Eastern Canada thing, I don't think I have ever had one. Looking closer, it's an American brand. Maybe with a Canadian headquarters?
The latest entry in Wikipedia says, "Radcliff sold Slush Puppie to Cadbury Schweppes for $16.6 million in 2000.[2][5] Slush Puppie was then acquired by J & J Snack Foods, a food manufacturer based in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey, on May 30, 2006."

I wonder why Skate Canada chose Gatineau, Quebec as the site for 2026 Canadian Nationals? Quebec has already hosted several skating events over the past couple of seasons (eg. Worlds, Nationals & Skate Canada)?

Plus, although Gatineau is a pretty place, it would seem like it would make more sense to hold the Pre-Olympics Nationals in a more accessible location like Ottawa?

Ummm. . .Gatineau is part of the national capital region. When I worked there, I biked from my apartment in Ottawa to my job in Gatineau in 20 minutes. One flies into Ottawa to go to Gatineau.

Slush Puppie was a staple food on the East coast when I was a kid.

They are still readily available here in NS.

DS loves the blue raspberry. I was always partial to the cherry.
