This article is about how illness affects skaters at both Olympics and Worlds, so I wasn't sure which forum to put it in -- so I just put it here. Admins, please move if need be.

"It's the Olympics of Getting Sick" by Kat Cornetta

There are a lot of things we already knew, and a couple new items: Maxim Naumov turned down Worlds because of a lingering post-Olympics illness, and Misha Mitrofanov was sick for quite a while post-4CCs.

I really notice that some skaters are prone to illness and others aren't. Nathan Chen always seemed to be ill around Nationals time. He was also ill again after the 2018 Olympics. When the pandemic hit, he was pretty obsessive with masks and such. It probably helped if only to keep him from getting any of the other bugs that were floating around.

I remember clear back to 1993 Nationals. One of the ice dancers would stop in the middle of practice to throw up over the side of the boards. They made it through. I wonder how many other skaters got that bug.

It's sort of hard to tell them "You should stay home if your sick". This isn't just a job or school; it's their lives. I do hope they make real efforts to stay away from other skaters. If they are in a team - poor partner. I always feel sorry for the coaches. Can you see them running away? No hugging! No hugging!

I remember back when I was skating a lot and watching a lot of skating, it seemed like in December into January so many skaters were sick with colds/flulike illnesses. Then one day I noticed the snot flying out from a kid who was spinning in the center of the ice. :yikes: No wonder.
