2026 Olys Womens SP PBP - Cheated Rivalry

Ah yes, the Russian Embassy in Kenya, an indisputable source of figure skating wisdom.

No one told them not to say the quiet part out loud. I agree with Allezfred that Russians are watching this with national pride, and the whole "AIN" concept is BS.

I wonder what will happen on PCS if Ami skates a good free. Her PCS were more than 1.5 below Mone and about 1 point ahead of Petrosian.

I loooooooove Nakai. Her programs are little-girly, but her skating is not. She has exceptional flow and movement and a wonderful lightness to her skating, plus nice choreography. If you ignore the little girl music and focus on the skating, she should have top tier PCS.

There should be a list of everybody who posts that judges should be harsh on skaters they don't like, but ignore the issues with skaters they do like, who then post about fairness in judging or transparency or objectivity. And, we wonder why figure skating scores are so subjective. Actually, no need for a list. You know who you are.

When folks kept saying Amber should skate the SP in the team event I kept thinking "are you crazy? " This is why the only choice was to let her do the Free (and even then I would have gone with Alysa). So sad for her but not shocked. I'll be glad when she retires and skates for fun.
Gutted for Amber but completely not surprised - her nerves were obvious. It was soooo close until that dayum loop.

Now a message for Coach Damon - Let her breathe and hang with Alysa and Isabeau, whatever calms her down, but I swear, take Amber's iPad away, her phone away, WHATEVER it takes to keep her off social media. I apologize for going a bit political here, but being the screaming liberal and ally that I am, I've already seen some of the awful homophobic, right wing hatred directed toward her on my social media feeds. I'm proud she stands up for the LGBTQ community and is vocal about it - but she does not deserve this backlash and she doesn't need it now. Let her feel she can just do her job for the next two days and get some joy back.

I wonder if some judges are even watching what is happening on the ice. Like I want eyeball tracking installed to see if they are looking at the skater.

After the double loop, I don't blame any judge who was drinking heavily instead of watching the skating .

Part of me knew it was coming, but I still couldn't believe it.

That list exists. Click on "Members".

Eh. I think Ami, Kaori, Mone, and Alysa are more likely to have Solid Skates than either the skate of a lifetime than a complete meltdown. I honestly think Petrosian is more likely to move down rather than up. But we'll see 🤷‍♀️

I do wonder if anyone at the ISU has ever thought to do a study to see how many skating fans they lose versus how many they keep with their inconsistencies in judging. I'm sure there are FSUers--probably the ones who lurk rather than the ones typing I'M DONE but still--who will genuinely not watch skating again if Petrosian wins. I'd like to know: 1. how much of a bounce skating gets after the Olympics 2. how many of those Oly fans turn into actual skating fans. which to me would be watching Nationals, Worlds, and at least one other competition so a low baseline here, versus 3. how many long term fans are lost after each cycle.

While some of y'all bringing up the numbers and judging and blah-blah are f-ing annoying, y'all are also the absolute backbone of the sport--those who pay $$$ to go to multiple events, hype up events, talk about it beyond FSU. My perception is that viewership has gone down and it is inexplicable to me why Eteri skaters are so valued as it's bad for the long-term growth of the sport, it's just not good skating, and it's not good judging.

There's no upside to the promotion of skaters like Petrosian and Gumennik. Especially as most of the "outrage" over his scoring is Russian bots botting. I checked out a lot of the profiles of those saying he wuz-robbed on ISU, The Skating Lesson, etc and the vast majority were obviously not real profiles. This is manufactured rage and those who were real people CLEARLY understood less about COP than I do and did not regularly follow skating. They couldn't even spell SATO. Even I can manage Sato.

I'll still watch skating BUT, and this is a big BUT, I stopped fitting my life around skating along time ago. If I miss a Grand Prix, oh well. If I only see one event at Euros, that's how it goes. If I totally miss 4CC, well, I needed the sleep. Hell, I didn't even know who the Canadian entry for men was until the Team Event. Eight years ago, I'd have been snarling and complaining and angry and overjoyed and ecstatic about...something. Now, it's just a fun thing I watch. Like, once upon a time, I'd have lost sleep over Ilia's skate in sympathy AND M/K's in excitement, replaying both in my head for different reasons. Now, I just close the computer and honestly, I'm done. I guess it's more healthy but it's also sad that something that used to bring me a lot of joy and was an emotional outlet is now...not.
I would assume that Japanese and Russian-spaking fans combined make at least 50% of the overall watching/paying figure skating fashionados. So if using this logic, ISU should bring back the Russian skaters and ensure they get enough medals.

I swear I don't know why any of these athletes (or honestly people in general) would be on social media. Is the latest TikTok dance worth it? I like kitten and puppies as much as the next person but really I don't see many useful things.

Well Amber has nothing to lose now, so hopefully she kills it in the free. She might not be able to medal, but a good performance should have her sitting in the leader's chair for a while.
The Mao in Sochi special (though that predates the couch).

Someone tell them to stop trying to make fetch happen (the judges should also be informed of this).

Skating has always had dramas and complaints about judging. I don't think it makes a difference either way. Most people couldn't care less about it until it gets a focus every 4 years. The latest carry on about the dance result (focusing on the evil French judge) that ended up being all over my social media was really unhealthy in terms of how it presented the sport. But most of it came from the US. I didn't see it from anywhere else. Doesn't help that algorithms don't do any favours so that is what I was getting. But I did see MSM outlets also trying to drum up the drama. Thankfully there were just as many comments trying to explain how the judging worked, that it wasn't fair to single out one judge but also they preferred the French.

I used to be totally obsessed with everything that happened in the sport. But I know my life just doesn't have the bandwith to be obsessed these days. And part of that is being a volunteer in the sport too. I must say the Olympics has kind of reignited a bit of passion because regardless of performances, I have still enjoyed it.

I’ve had this feeling Nakai is going to win. How many times have we had the youngest, not the veteran favorite woman win at the Olympics. I do hope I’m wrong because I’d much rather have Kaori or Alysa wear the crown. Overall, this was a very well skated event. OTOH the men’s short program was a well skated event too and we all know what a total disaster the free skates overall turned out to be. Fingers crossed.

Isabeau wuzrobbed in my book. There was a time when judging panels really appreciated her brand of beautiful skating at the Olympics. But not so much anymore I guess. But I can’t tell you how many of my non-skating friends bring her up as the one they enjoy the most because of the beauty in her skating.

Also wondering why ! is used by the panel for clearly inside edge lutz takeoffs?? It doesn’t seem correct lutz technique is really required anymore??

Sad for Amber but I really wasn’t surprised. When they showed her backstage just before the warm up and Alysa was throwing a ball to her having a good time, I was hoping she could skate more free.

Other skaters I really enjoyed were Julia Sauter, Loena, Nina and Samodelkina. Love Jia Shin too…shame for the fall.

It might be the panel cannot see clearly either with the eye or the replay of the edge because of the angle of their camera. They don't get the same video that the audience do.

I sure wish in a way that Alysa could explain to Amber to go out there and just have fun, to just enjoy the sport. Alysa's frame of mind is what gives her success. When Amber hit that triple axel, I told myself, "Good! Now she can ease up and not be so determined, cautious and tense.

It didn't happen like it does with Alysa. Alysa mentioned that if she fell during a jump, it wouldn't matter because she was out there for the love of the sport. If she fell, then she fell, and she would get up and simply go on with her skating. Alysa just loves to skate and has fun while doing it.

I mentioned before that I won second place at the Anheuser Bush Budweiser Arm Wrestling Championships in Northern Louisiana in 1984. I was dared by my friend to enter. I thought what in the hell am I doing, but I entered anyway. I had to arm wrestle 12 women that all looked like they were Harley Bike riders.

When I won the first round, I thought to myself that it was really fun, and that's the attitude I had the whole time. When I won 2nd place, those women asked me how I managed it because I didn't look "tough" at all. I told them that I worked at a garment factory where I lifted 15 to 25 pounds of pre-cut camouflage pants and put them on buggies, and that I had done it for around 8 years at that time.

Of course, my mom nearly fainted when I told her. She took a picture of me with that trophy and I still have it.

I know the realism of being at the Olympics has gotten to Amber just like it had gotten to Ilia. I wish I could tell Amber to ease up and just have fun like Alysa does. I'm praying for Amber that those nerves will go away and just enjoy the moment.

I am so impressed with Alysa's mental headspace. Where she is at now by just enjoying her sport I think she is more than making up for the early years when it wasn't fun.

She is definitely a great example for all skaters to show how to approach high level sport. However the reality is not everyone is Alysa and they are still going have issues.

For Amber she probably works her butt off and invests so much. That is why one mistake (and it is only one) was so devastating. But it is not the total sum of the performance.

I mean, we've had a lot of youngest, but many of them were the favorites. Tara was co-favorite. Sarah was a surprise but also a third year senior and reigning world bronze medalist. Shuzuka was a world champ, not a favorite due to a difficult season, and not the youngest for sure. Yuna Kim was the reining world champ, three time world medalist, and a definite favorite. Sotnikova was a surprise, but, as a 3rd year senior, practically geriatric compared to Lipnitskaya. Zagitova is the first ever to win without attending a world championship, so she kind of fits the bill, but most people considered her the favorite as the euro champ, GPF champ, and Russian champ. Shcherbakova was very much not the favorite, but the favorite, Valieva, was younger.

So not while I've been watching skating, but maybe before. I would say Ami is not the favorite but was considered by many to be a podium threat and a gold threat.

Also wondering why ! is used by the panel for clearly inside edge lutz takeoffs?? It doesn’t seem correct lutz technique is really required anymore??

They can find the e button for some people.

The “q” is what kills me. If the judges are going to be that darn picky if the skaters are short on rotation (cough*for some skaters*cough), they should take a darn protractor out on the ice to get an accurate measurement.
Maybe it is time for overhead cameras with AI to evaluate the rotation of the jumps at the international events. If they can show the video replays of jump height and distance then surely it is possible to take out the human factor in calling jump rotation.

ETA - also using those cameras, use the height x distance x jump abbreviation, then it applies any q, < or << to come up with the base value. The camera could also pick up the edge. The only human input is identifying the jump and judges applying the list of reductions for falls or other errors. Identify the jump as a lutz and then the camera will identify if the edge was corrrect.

A ridiculous, statistically impossible number of q and ! calls. Technology would make better calls with less error, even if that error is not zero.

I feel like Q is very often used to call rotation on a skater who should have a < or a << but the tech specialists don't want to call them. For some reason.

What a well skated event, for the most part! I really enjoyed many of the skaters and the final 2 groups especially.

I would be happy with the current Top 3 as the podium in any order.

I hated how Amber completely gave up on the program after the double Loop.

This (plus the triple axel) is why I picked Ami to win in the pre-Olympic Substack Live I did. My cohost calls it the Surprise Teenager phenomenon.

Of course, she hasn't won YET, and a lot could happen on Thursday. But my gut told me she had a good chance.
