The current contract with ABC runs through 2028 which is why the switch isn't until 2029. There had been some talk about the Oscars moving to streaming off and on over the last couple of years.

I do think the Oscars are better off online at this point honestly. Maybe they'll finally let the show be more about celebrating the movies of the last year and less about making sure that people only talk for 45 seconds regardless of whether or not there's two people winning for their work. I'd rather see everyone get to give a proper speech than see people winning for smaller categories in particular getting played off as soon as they say thank you. Winning is supposed to be a huge moment for these people, let them enjoy it.

I personally liked Hamnet more than I did OBAA and Sinners and it’s a lot better than Marty Supreme.
