Skating Books

I just launched two new books covering the history of the World and European Figure Skating Championships. Both books are packed with detailed results going back to the very beginning, historical photos, trivia and fascinating facts & firsts.

If you’re a serious figure skating fan who loves history, these reference books are for you. You can get your copies here:

A Complete History of the World Figure Skating Championships - https://books2read.com/Worlds-Book

A Complete History of the European Figure Skating Championships - https://books2read.com/Europeans-Book
I had the privilege of reading A Complete History of the World Figure Skating Championships as through NetGalley. Congrats on publication day! I agree that it is a good reference book and would make a good gift for the ardent fan who is into both skating and skating history.

Thanks so much for your kind words - really glad you enjoyed reading through Netgalley! :)

Gabriella Papadakis is also set to release a memoir titled "Pour ne pas disparaître", which will be out at the start of 2026 (January 15th).
The Google translations of the summary reads:

Coming back to this one, some pretty damming quotes are being released today about the situation between Gabi and Gui (note that this is a machine translation):

Her teenage angst, the sexual assaults she suffered at the hands of two men, her concussion, an abortion, her depression. Adding to these wounds is a relationship with her ice skating partner that has deteriorated over the years despite their numerous successes, including five world championship titles between 2015 and 2022.

Papadakis recounts "the arguments, the constant fear, the health problems, the feeling of a certain kind of control," leading up to their breakup in December 2024. "The idea of being alone with him terrifies me," she says. "His attitude throws me off balance. Sometimes he ignores me; sometimes he plays the best friend, as if nothing were wrong […] His coldness chills me to the bone."

A few weeks before their title at the 2022 Olympics, "his behavior stresses me out considerably; one or two panic attacks almost prevent me from getting on the ice," she writes.

For Cizeron, "the foundations began to crumble when Gabriella started to get worse." Papadakis "always had a certain strength, but also great vulnerabilities," he explained to L'Équipe. "I took care of all the logistics. I had to adapt, to be strong for two. But I felt, despite my efforts, that our relationship was eroding," he added.

The skater, for her part, accuses him of "palpable anger," "a kind of constant tension," and fears "an explosion." The two athletes briefly tried to get back on track through couples therapy. A "total failure," according to Cizeron. "I realized as the sessions progressed just how far she was drifting."

I finished reading The Favorites book a couple days ago and it was a perfect beach read, particularly for an ice dancing fan! OMG I was hearing Johnny Weir in my head as Ellis Dean seemed like a cross between him and Dave Lease (if he had been a forgotten Olympic skater)! I agree the author really caught a sense of the figure skating world without being part of it herself. I really appreciated her use of the real-life venues and Grand Prix series in an otherwise fictional tale, as well as capturing the changes in the ice dancing rules, elements and scoring methodologies over the time span of the book. I didn't catch any glaring errors.
So I only recently discovered The Favorites this month thanks to a suggestion by a non-FSU friend backed with a positive recommendation from @fan. I'm about halfway through and LOVING it!!! I'm listening to the audio book version as I'm finally home for a couple of weeks with no travel for once, so I have time to listen to it on drives. I legit am grinning ear-to-ear as I drive while listening to it.

@Yuri it kills me every time I hear Johnny Weir's voice as he reads out the lines/quotes from Ellis Dean - SO perfect!! Also, beach read is the perfect description for this book! Anyone have any other recommendations of skating fiction/novels like The Favorites?? I'm heading into a travel period beginning mid-April with 3 trips in 4 weeks, including a beach vacation to Mexico, so this is exactly the kind of read I am looking for! Just finished Gabby's book last weekend coming back from NYC, so need something new.

Every time I browse Indigo (Canada's Barnes & Noble), I see a lot of skating/figure skating/hockey themed romance type fiction novels on display. Seems to be a trending genre again, so looking for recos on which books might actually be good reads! Reminds me of when Cutting Edge came out back in the day :D.
