No-Longer-Prince Andrew

He cannot be stripped of his title of Prince. He can be asked to leave the royal grounds entirely, but he has a lease and can refuse legally.

Removing the title of Prince would involve King Charles issuing a new Letters Patent defining who is entitled to be called HRH or Prince/Princess (the current definition of HRH stems from the Letters Patent issued by George V in 1917). I think Charles is unlikely to do that, partly because he is more reluctant to act in general (hoping Andrew will do the right thing on his own?), and because it would open up a can of worms about removing other HRHs (Harry and Meghan for example, who are not supposed to be using their HRHs but did not have them removed, and even people like Beatrice and Eugenie who have, and use, HRHs but live private lives and are not working royals). I fully expect William will issue a new Letters Patent when he becomes king, though, possibly removing the HRH from all but the direct line of succession.

My expectation is that he will remove the HRH & Prince/Princess style/honor for anyone who is not a working royal. He may clarify that only children & grandchildren of a monarch & their spouses are entitled to the dignity of the HRH-Prince/Princess designation if they choose, as an adult, to enter a life of public service on behalf of the monarchy.

I also think he'll allow anyone who has served the monarchy with honor for their entire lives to retire & retain the HRH-Prince/Princess style - so, the Kents & Gloucesters aren't unceremoniously dumped.

There has been some whispers that he may even apply that same logic to his own children - though I don't know how he would have them then styled - possibly the same way Louise & James have been styled their entire lives? George would, obviously, become Duke of Cornwall upon William's accession, but perhaps Lady Charlotte & Lord Louis? That may be an option - and I could see him extending that to all of his first cousins as well as his nephew & niece as a way of signaling their close descent from a monarch but not putting any onus on them for a public life if they don't want that themselves when they reach adulthood.

I feel like I’ve heard this story before. They are going to take titles away from their family members when they are monarch.

But then they become monarch and don’t.

I guess it’s a good bargaining chip to keep the others behaving.
Prince William was mentored by QE2 who buried her head in the sand when it came to Andrew and other problems. It's hard to believe he would be radically different.

IMHO, PA and SF should quietly leave the country and live under the radar for several years. Maybe a nice beach area in India or Brazil? :sekret::sekret::slinkaway:slinkaway

Juan Carlos now lives in private luxury in the UAE. It's been reported that apparently Andrew (and probably Sarah) have a similar offer but they're loathe to leave the UK because of their daughters and grandchildren.

Prince no more -

His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew.

Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.

Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.

ETA: The BBC says Andrew will be stashed away at Sandringham on Charles' dime.

Guardian Article:

It's pretty much what I suggested would be appropriate, except that he will be living on the Sandringham, rather than Balmoral, Estate.

I do wonder whether anyone or anything could have altered the trajectory of his life so that things did not end up as they have.

Well done to King Charles.
Finally. And under a tremendous pressure from Prince William, according to many royal reporters.

It really must be done, but we'll have to wait and see what this "formal process" to strip Andrew of his Princely title. The York dukedom and the other peerages granted to him at the time of his wedding can only be done by Parliament; the Prince title and HRH style are done by Letters Patent from the King without any need for Parliament to act. It will be interesting to see if any LP is just with regard to Prince Andrew or if it is a broader LP that removes the Prince/Princess titles and HRH styles for all non-working royals.

ETA - sounds like an Act of Parliament won't be necessary - instead King Charles is asking for Andrew's peerages to be removed from the Peerage Roll. I'll be curious about what royal commentators have to say regarding how this process works and why, if it is as simple as the monarch making that formal request, that the claim has always been it takes an act of parliament and that is far too much time & a waste of the government's time to be bothered with except in cases of treason.

Wow. This is as bold and decisive statement I think I've ever seen from the Royal Family - calling it fact that he continues to deny as much as says that Charles believes he's guilty. I'm glad this is the moment he (or they, inc Camilla and William) chose to do the right thing.

There was a breathless puff of a story this week with some "expert" saying that William was pressuring his cousins to pressure their father, which in a somewhat hilarious turn was countered by another tabloid as completely false. Speculating of course but if he did meet with his cousins it was to warn them what was about to happen and assure them that this about Andrew and not them, no change to their status etc.

Also, it clearly says "private" accommodation - is Sandringham considered private while the Lodge and Frogmore are not?
