Russian figure skating news in 2024

Petr Gumennik’s SP from today’s Tamara Moskvina’s master class

Thanks for the video. I've always been a fan of Gumennik. When he was a teenager, he'd master the 3A or a quad and then promptly grow 3 inches and have to do it all over again. Now, that he's an adult, the jumps look solid and he has always been an elegant skater. I did really like his Dune program from last season, but I get why they want something new for the Olympics.

Sometimes I am puzzled by Moskvina's music choices for her skaters, but this works very well with his skating style.

He looks to be in good form ahead of the OQE. But he needs to lose the handkerchief prop.

Yes, I don't get that at all, and it's actually distracting in a not so good way.

The second jump pass looked under, but otherwise this was a very impressive public debut. Of course it's not the same pressure as the OQE will be, but that event will be packed with headcases and strong but not yet great skaters.

Since the discourse on the handkerchief made me curious...

Referring to ISU Special Regulations and Technical Rules, pertaining to Single & Pair Skating / Ice Dance:

Rule 501
Clothing

1. At ISU Championships and International Competitions, including the Olympic Winter Games and the Winter Youth Olympic Games, the clothing of the Competitors must be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing may, however, reflect the character of the music chosen. The clothing must not give the effect of excessive nudity inappropriate for the discipline. Men must wear full length trousers. Accessories and props are not permitted. [Emphasis mine]
Clothing that does not adhere to these guidelines will be penalized by a deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n).
For Ice Dance, exceptions to the restrictions may be announced by the IDTC.

2. The decorations on costumes must be non-detachable. Part of the costume or decoration falling on the ice will be penalized by a deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n).

...in which case the handkerchief prop probably won't feature in competition? Unless the handkerchief is somehow not a 'prop' but a (non-detachable) 'decoration on costume'.

He'll go through the test skates in September and they will critique the programs with a magnifying glass. This is a show case for all the skaters at Moskvina's rink prior to the test skates.

My vote that he won’t qualify is correct! Not only is he Russian but feedback is overwhelmingly “one of the worst programs ever” partly because of the handkerchief but also no choreo. It’s like “have no choreo but do a handkerchief prop!” If they remove the handkerchief there is absolutely nothing.

He pulled it out of his sleeve. (Any professional magician would tell him that doing that so obviously is a no-no.) It also looked to me as if he actually placed it through the blade and used it to hold the blade in place during the final spin. If he tries either of those maneuvers in Beijing or even Milan, I will eat my hat. :hat1:

My knee hurt looking at the position in his catchfoot spin.

These are so awful! Is this the same skater as dune or onegin?!?! Or transformers? lol!!! It’s so horrible display of nothing. Had to do some research on sports.ru and they are saying people aren’t getting the programs because he’s not wearing the costumes yet. I don’t know. I couldn’t even finish the free skate because I moved right to research! Because OQE is in two weeks I do expect fully done programs to the max. Because there is no competing between September and February: none zero. So any impression has to be incredible and last 4 months. This is awful and the only impression will be “forget this skater exists: this skater is a total zero” these project pcs of 4 or 5 in pcs and no qualifying to Beijing

“This the free skate program was staged by Ilya Averbukh. Gumennik appeared on the ice again in a training suit. So it's hard to judge the integrity of the image. “

Yeah that’s the problem

It all looks so weak. Was he the best alternative, or was this, as usual, a very politically driven decision? No reply needed.

 I actually liked the handkerchief. He is skating to the soundtrack of "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" and if you have read the book and/or seen the film, it absolutely makes sense.

The book is absolutely brilliant. If you haven't read it so far, go and do it. One of my favorite books ever.

No reply needed, and yet you act like you know everything.

In fact, that was not a political decision. He won Russian Cup Final (a decider for Men’s nominee) fair and square. While he trains at Moskvina’s rink, his coach doesn’t have any influence over Mishin or Tutberidze or Pluschenko.
Plus, almost none questions can be raised about neutrality status.

I also am not a fan of his programs this year, and much prefer the ones he had last season. However, I am not sure how a skater landing 2 quads in the SP and 5 quads in the LP in early September can be described as “so weak”. And while his PCS are far behind the level of Japanese guys or Cha or Brown, I don’t see how he is much weaker than the Men’s field in general

Of course it’s now a big controversy about how bad these programs are and why they are so bad and how someone went from the best programs in men’s 2024-2025 to the absolute worst many have seen In years.

He’s going to go to Beijing and get 4s in pcs no one can doubt

The Olympic programs of Gumennik caused a lot of controversy. What are their pros and cons?

The victory of Peter Gumennik at the St. Petersburg Cup-2025 could be remembered by the grandmaster 300+ points, a new record in the short or the first five-ad team. But much more discussions were caused by new programs that will take you to the Olympic qualification in Beijing - less than two weeks before it.

The discussion among the fans was so flared up that the choreographer of the freestyle Ilya Averbukh turned to them with explanations.

The short pales in comparison to last year's "Dune", but it can't be repeated. What is good about "Perfume”?

He was never in a real competition with dune or onegin so real judges never judged them but they were totally better than this crap garbage vomit of disgrace

I saw him at a junior GPF years ago and he became my favorite among Russian men (single). I thought he had potential for artistry. I didn’t see it in these programs but I am happy that he landed most of his jumps (some imperfect). In men’s competition it is very important to land quads and he can do all except the quad axel. I think the programs need more Polish and I hope he will develop that by February. It almost seemed like he is still getting used to these new programs. I wish him the best.

If they remove the handkerchief, there are two quads-one of them a quad lutz- a triple axel, some footwork, a catch foot spin. That’s not “nothing”. In men’s field in particular jumps are the most important thing. Choreography develops as a skater learns a new program.

This is a new program and he will develop artistry as the season progresses.

My god if the Japanese guys and Cha are some overall standard of PCS. The best skating in the men's field from a choreography/performance point of view comes from Aymoz, and has been for a while. He should be outclassing the men you mentioned apart from Brown while knocked out drunk, and I'd say he's better than Brown too on those two criteria. Japanese guys and Cha are only better in terms of basic skating, which isn't the only criteria and never was.

Shun Sato and Sota Yamamoto are especially awful performers, Kagiyama strains like hell and has a horrible line, and Cha is the definition of a cookie cutter kpop boy who can't control his limbs or dance if he were paid a million bucks, which cookie cutter kpop boys are.

Not to agree with CE of all people, so I won't, but Gummenik suffers from the same tacky, bullshit choreography that a lot of Russians do. Which doesn't really matter because they were never penalised for it.

Usually this would be true! But it is only true when skaters are competing in real competitions with real judges. Gummenik is banned from all that. He will be competing in Russia with Russian judges who have already given these garbage crap vomit programs near 10’s in pcs. He’s not going to learn a thing. Not develop a thing. Going to Grand Prix or other real completions he would learn. He won’t learn a thing. He has already gotten near 10’s in Russia and even though public reaction has been swift and brutal attacking the programs he already got good scores so no motivation to change. When he gets 4’s in OQE it will be horrible because that’s the impression he has made and what he has to improve from. But he can’t do it in the public eye. He is banned from any real competition until Olympics. And these are so bad and so horrific he may not even qualify now

 anybody who thinks Malinin (whom I like a great deal) who at this time is the odds on favorite for the OGM has better PCS than Gumennik are delusional. And If Gumennik stays on his feet for 7 quads, he's in the medal hunt right alongside the Japanese and French skaters because it's unlikely all of them (except Malinin) will complete 7 quads in two programs.
