Russian figure skating news in 2024

Yeah, I think that somewhere in the 65-67 range for her SP is likely. Also remember, she is going to be skating first in the SP in Beijing at the OQE (and in Milano-Cortina for that matter) because she has no WS points. We saw what happened to Nargiz Sueleymanova skating first in Boston - she had a lovely program but got hosed in PCS. Even skaters like Nini An and Ahsun Yun, who have some international reputation established but were skating #7 & 9 in the SP, only managed PCS in the high 5s & low 6s - granted, they both had disastrous SPs, but the judges weren't handing out PCS like candy and I don't expect that to be the case with the OQE - and it definitely won't be the case at the Olympics.

I really think the PCS reset is going to be a lot more impactful than Russia realizes. Add in the tech panel taking a sharper eye to her rotations than has happened to Russian women in the past... It will be really interesting to see what happens at the OQE and how Eteri recalibrates between September & February to maximize Petrosian's scoring potential.
If she picks one war horse for her sp music and gets 6 does she switch to a new war horse for Olympics? There is almost nothing you can do technically in a sp more than what she plans. Changing a triple toe to loop in combo doesn’t add that many points. Probably best to do war horses. Judges like them!

Well, I'd say she probably would be better off changing her content and going for a clean 2A with +3 or +4 GOE rather than continuing to try for a sketchy 3A. If anything, it takes away the temptation for the tech panel to take a microscope to the rest of her jumps, which can only be to her benefit. But Adelia's still really going to be hindered by the start order. Heck, even Alysa was hurt a little by an earlier starting spot at Worlds with regard to her PCS - she was 4th in PCS behind Kaori, Mone & Isabeau.

I just have a really hard time believing she's going to get PCS on the same level as the very top tier (the 6 US & JPN women, Chaeyeon, Loena & Gubanova) with PCS ranging from 32-35. I expect her to be in the next tier in the middle of the 29-31 PCS range in the SP (Schizas, Haein, Pinzarrone, Repond, Petrokina, Gutmann, Samodelkina, Sauter, Mikutina & Kurakova).

It’s very tricky because:
To combat low PCs you may need to risk it and go for 3A and also Established skaters can reduce difficulty and hope for more GOE but that is a strategy that may not be available to Petrosian. The judges don’t know her. She may only get +1 for a great double axel someone established may get +4 on. So if someone is in Beijing who was also at worlds or euros and they do a great double axel they get more GOE than Petrosian. So she may have to do a triple. If she is only getting+1 and 6 pcs she has to do something

On one level that seems like a waste of money because those teams aren’t doing anything but Russian events! But I guess they are of the belief you should try to grow and impress even only Russian judges and fans?!?

Ehhhhh... I don't know that it necessarily hurts them to start getting choreo from outside Russia, even if it is Richaud. Even if Russia isn't allowed back into international sports without restriction until the 2026-27 season, it doesn't hurt these skaters to orient their skating & style to what is scoring well internationally.

FWIW, I liked Muravieva when she was on the JGP a few years ago and Plushenko has struck me as quite intentional in the development of AOP. As much as I think many of us were inclined to write it off as a vanity project, he's putting good effort into developing more well-rounded skaters than the ones churned out by Team Eteri.

Tutberidze churned out champions and championship contenders. When they no longer meet that definition, she goes to the next.

Plushenko is a coach and show producer, which is a long-term proposition. Not everyone will be a star or champion, but many more can be a professional and transition out of the competitive ranks into performance.

She's no longer with Plushenko. She hasn't lived up to her potential. She is talented, but very inconsistent.

Well, leaving Plushenko hasn't made her any better then, lol.
Unknown as she left at the end of last season after two not very good seasons. IMHO, she's too erratic and cannot control her nerves. If one thing goes wrong, she's prone to totally falling apart.

That’s another aspect. They want to reflect the outside world and trends even if they are only aiming for the Olympic qualifying event in September 2029. Keep up with the joneses!

Muravieva switched from Pluschenko to Mishin, whose students have been working with Benoit for a very long time. Even during the last few domestic seasons, he has at least worked with Semenenko (not sure if there were more).

So, apparently the ISU Council is going to review/consider Zhilina's case at their next in-person meeting in July.

If she paid Russia back there doesn’t seem to any problems! She was trying to get a release while being on reserve team and taking money. The nerve!

Maybe with a fresh start and maturity and supports she can become consistent. I always remember Katelyn Osmond and Joannie Rochette how inconsistent they were and not great with nerves, but as they matured it settled down? I hope she can find that.

Hopefully. Some of the rumors are that she has a "skating mother" and I don't know how well that will go off at Mishin's rink, but we'll see. She is a lovely skater who would have had a world junior medal if Putin hadn't pulled the ice from beneath her.

junior test skates:
11/8 16:30 junior men sp
12/8 15:00 junior men lp
17:00 junior ladies sp
13/8 15:00 junior ladies lp

Stanislav Morozov joins Tutberidze's coaching team. That's a name I was missing for a while.
Something weird is going on there, Morozov is/was on a trial as new main Boikova/Kozlovski coach in Tutberidze’s school.
Alexei Tikhonov switched from Tutberidze to Navka’s new school, Trankov has never coached anyone permanently and is mostly doing TV work these days rather than actual coaching. So, B/K ended up with no pairs coach at all and they had to find at least someone

Wow. Is Mozer coaching again?
Frankly, in my book Tutberidze + Dudakov + Morozov is quite a good pairs coaching team.

Morozov himself was a big clunk on the ice, but the man could make his partner shine, especially in lifts and throws. B/K's lifts are fine, but they really could use some work with their throws. That's almost always what puts them behind M/G in competition.

Maxim Trankov has just posted on his Instagram that Russian figure skating commentator Alexander Grishin has passed away: https://www.instagram.com/p/DM97K5YM4lj/

Any details? He was still quite young.

ETA: chempionat.com has issued a statement of his wife. He was 47 and she said that he died in an accident. Other newspapers are writing that he died on a platform at a train station or something and it was raining heavily. Sounds like a freak accident to me.
Condolences to his family and friends, he always did a great job commenting.

Even not speaking Russian, the relationship between Grishin, Kolyada and Shcherbakova was fun to watch. They'd all get so excited when a skater was having a good skate. His loss will leave a hole in the Russian figure skating broadcast. Condolences to his wife and very young son.
