Chinese skating news & social media updates pt. 5, 2023 onwards

I see wang/liu up to their bs again, liu even wiping away fake tears in a 20 min long interview.

What's gross though is it is being reposted by sina ice and snow and sina sports.

The selection for CoC host spots and the Olympic Qualifying Tournament seems to be taking place combined between Aug 12-13, unless I'm misunderstanding.

And according to the eligibility criteria, Wang/Liu are indeed eligible.

Care to share any links to any of this stuff?

I just saw this, and it's GOT to be Richaud, right? (Wang Yihan, Free Skate)

Chinese JGP Qualifiers are being conducted at the Inter-Club League Harbin competition this week.

Jr Women's SP results & some videos can be found here:

There are a bunch of discussions about the rest of the competition on Weibo - Sr Women's SP results are here -
1) Zhang Ruiyang 60.43
2) An Xiangyi 57.51
3) Jin Chenxi 57.18

Sr Pairs SP results - https://m.weibo.cn/compose/repost?id=5189001976744445

Jr Men SP results - https://m.weibo.cn/compose/repost?id=5189045970014935

Jr RD results - https://m.weibo.cn/compose/repost?id=5188981176403098

Doesn't look like Wang/Liu are entered for the Sr Ice Dance based on the entry lists I found, so that's good. Haven't found the Jr Pairs results, but did find the entry list and there are only 4 teams entered, so I'm thinking that all 4 teams will get 2 JGPs since China has 2 spots in each of the 4 JGPs with pairs.

Your links are taking me to the repost section. Here's the weibo account where the entries and score tables may be found.

The Wang/Liu one will be in August, if it does happen. Around a month to go.

Thanks! I was trying to get to that account page but couldn't, so I just did a general search.

Does anyone else keep getting wang/liu content on xhs even though they blocked them? They have to be getting promoted under the figure skating tag by someone out there right? Someone go embezzle funds from their management company for the sake of my eyes.

I was right it's Richaud! But for some reason they named it as free skate instead of SP in the post.

It's really not impressive tbh. Jumps used to be Chinese skaters strength. Really barreling down the rink and vaulting to create huge jumps. The fresh batch seems to have meh skating skills, okay spins, and tentative jumps. Or they're "Daiwei" where it's clear the timing's so poor 99% of the time that it creates poor air positions and nearly all imaginable errors on landings (and trash spins people pretend are amazing like they did with his "predecessor" Yan Han).

Yihan got a score of 140+ for the LP in the next comp.

@Karen-W They're scoring her like a senior and I don't at all think they're doing her a service. She has weaker skating skills than some of the other juniors from what I recall, and I'm really not a fan of those jumps.

Shin is out of juniors now, so maybe the space is clearer for Wang, but who knows who else is coming up.

The junior field is notoriously unpredictable. She could easily be on the podium this year or out of the top 10. About the only thing one can guarantee with the Jr women is that Shimada will be at the top again.

As far as how the domestic Chinese judges are scoring her, I'd be more concerned if Chinese domestic summer comps generated the interest & following of fans the way Russian domestic comps do - because that's how you build undeserved hype. As it is, I can't imagine that many people are aware of how she's scoring at home - and when she does get to seniors, her scores are going to go the same way Nini's have gone & she'll be a middle of the pack skater unless she's delivering clean programs.

She actually is getting attention in China. Not to Russia's "national sport" level (and not internationally either), but those are quite a few views she racked up for her SP that I'd posted previously (upwards of 46k at the time of this post).

I don't begrudge her that. But I think it's a disservice because she doesn't necessarily know what to expect outside China. It's the start of the season to begin, they should be reserving these comps for serious feedback heading in, but for some reason they've chosen not to.

Oh, I think it's good if she's getting attention in China - that's great for growing the sport there. She's competed internationally, so I think she probably has a good idea of where she'll score internationally & can recognize domestic score inflation just like skaters around the world.

I think the worry I'd have, in that case, though, would be with new fans not understanding that those scores are inflated and not reflective of what she'd receive internationally, then screaming anti-Chinese bias when her international scores are lower than her domestic scores.

Yihan's great, but Shiqi Gao's the one I'm looking forward to seeing again. She got some JGPs, right?

Will 137+ do? :P

That seems... generous.
She has great diva potential, though, I really enjoy watching her.
