Programs that jumped the shark?

Totally agree about Jason and “Old Friends.” That was terrible. So many other good S/G songs Tracy could have chosen.
Although I wouldn’t classify it as my definition of jumping the shark (has to have a shocking/bizarre tone along with being a bad idea), this Jason program was a big head-scratcher. Brilliant skater with music from a brilliant musician, and chose obscure subdued music from said musician while skating a non-dynamic subdued program. Fail.

I'm not a fan. However, I don't think they are "jumping the shark" level - just not my cup of tea.
Come now. You are a poster with brains and taste. The costumes, Gilles' facial expressions, the elaborate entrances and exits to the ice, the effusive acknowledgment of Canadian audiences' standing ovations -- their RD's sailed far over the shark years ago.

Well, when you put it that way....

Bourne & Kraatz '00 FD to Harry Connick Jr.

And their OD costumes from '00 Skate Canada I think we titled her outfit Little Bo Peep Hooking Costume or maybe I did. Can't recall who owns that perfect description to her costume.

Also have to add Alegria for Lobacheva and Averbukh. Not sure what they were trying to attain there in 99-00 season.

Viktor Petrenko had a pro program to Mambo No 5 paired with various blowup/sex dolls that he had literally for decades.

To me this was a key moment when the pro skating boom really jumped the shark.

For your viewing pleasure, here's a performance from 1999 with Lou Bega live vocals. You're welcome.

I had forgotten about that dreadful and icky Petrenko program!

The dress was beautiful. And I liked the program, but it would have been great without voiceovers.
I felt the same, it was the voiceovers that were the problem but otherwise I thought it was

Well he learned the lesson well. Im frantically trying to keep up with the Benjamim Clementine sp just in my head . :respec: Jason

Does this thread mean a program has jumped the shark as it developed over the season? Or its original selection was jumping the shark as it relates to the skater's career?

A program that does not seem up to par with the skaters previous programs.

Like my example is Michelle Kwan’s Beatles short program that seems so off signature for her and I disliked it I was so glad she dropped it.

Mostly your second question, but I can also see it applying to the first if it so developed that way.

Also, in the TV land jumping the shark means a storyline that goes so astray or become so absurd that it no longer is believable to the original episodes or holds true to the premise of the characters or storyline.

My intent in this was a program that became so off brand or even crazy if that’s how it went that it no longer seemed it belonged in that skaters arsenal of programs.

I think you’re thinking of her Eric Clapton program that she dropped for EoE. She stuck with Beatles the whole season.

Any Plushenko program

also Lajoie/Lagha doing claaaaaaaaaaaaaaasic programs, I dont think it suits them

I liked Michelle's Beatles program? I think it was well done and a nice little departure for her, if not one of her more iconic programs.

Also, that 2000 haircut was her best look ever. Great dress, too.

I feel like the Beatles SP would be more fondly remembered if she skated better at Worlds. Same goes for Ariane, although that program also has the burden of the short hair and a blah costume.

No, it’s hard to associate the words Michelle with kitchen break, but…..

Didn’t she return to the Beatles and then drop it?

Yeah, that one was a bad one as well. Lol.
In case you need to refresh your memory:

Kwan’s “A Day in the Life” Jeff Beck guitar cover choreo by Lori Nichol:

Kwan did the above SP all season long in the 1999-2000 season.

Kwan’s “Rush” by Eric Clapton choreo by Christopher Dean:

Kwan did this SP during the GP and Pro-Ams at the beginning of the 2000-2001 season before adapting “East of Eden” into a SP, first performance it at Nationals in January 2001. That huge standing ovation and all those 6.0s for that Nationals performance most likely sealed Rush’s fate and she did EOE at the GPF (held in February back in the day) and Worlds.

Also… the Russian judge gave her a 5.9/5.9 for that performance
