Junior Grand Prix 2025/26

There are no reallocations in the pairs discipline.
Well, the Swiss JGP selection document said they'd "returned" most of their spots, so there was a question in my mind as to whether or not the ISU would decide to reallocate pairs spots this year even though the JGP General Announcement doesn't reallocate any pairs spots. It would have been nice had they done so since we all know that neither Georgia nor Ukraine have any junior pairs teams let alone enough to fill up the dozen JGP spots each of them have this season.

I want to continue my campaign/idea that it makes more sense for the top JGP spots to be decided in priority of the countries that have at least two skaters/teams that have made it into the FS. You wouldn't need to have so much of this complicated replacement procedure...

Ehhhhh... I'd actually make it more complicated, because I don't think it's necessarily fair to punish countries that harshly at the JGP level - it IS a developmental series after all, and there are often skaters coming up through the pipeline from Advanced Novice who deserve a shot if someone from their country does exceptionally well at Jr Worlds, and find a way to reward countries for utilizing the JGP spots they earn.

I think maybe the better way to do it would be to allocate the spots the first season a country earns them but if they don't use at least as many spots as the next highest tier in the next JGP season & they earn additional spots again at the next Jr Worlds then they are dropped down to the next tier the following season & the next highest placing country gets moved up a tier, though still allow all countries who have at least 1 entry at JWC to earn at least 3 JGP spots for the next season regardless of whether they used 3 spots that JGP season.

So, in this scenario - 2024 Jr Worlds results

Hmmmmm... Japan doesn't have an ice dance spot in Baku, so it would seem they don't plan on using their spots in Riga, Ankara, or Varese. I'm a bit surprised that Yoshida/Ogahara weren't assigned 1 JGP right out of the gate like Yamashita/Nagata, but maybe they've split like Kishimoto/Tamura.

Also, I find it really hard to believe the JSF isn't using all of their women's spots. They didn't use all of their men's spots last year, but I'm wondering if there is a chance additional skaters/teams could be assigned to the earlier JGPs after summertime monitoring.

More Announcements are up -

JGP Varese - https://isu-d8g8b4b7ece7aphs.a03.az...TA2025-Announcement-Final-1751013313-7026.pdf

JGP Bangkok - https://isu-d8g8b4b7ece7aphs.a03.az...THA2025-Announcement-final-1751017499-045.pdf

Reallocated spots -
Varese
Men - New Zealand relinquished their spot - USA picked up the additional spot, which means both Germany & Estonia declined a 2nd spot as they were next in line ahead of the USA.
Women & Dance - none were relinquished

Bangkok -
Men, Women & Pairs - none were relinquished
Dance - Belgium relinquished their spot, Italy relinquished both of their spots; Canada picked up one additional spot, France picked up one additional spot which means Ukraine elected to not accept a 2nd spot in Bangkok

As predicted, NZL kept their 1 Men's spot, which means Li will be competing in Riga & Bangkok & that also means there will be at least 1 spot available for reallocation in Baku & Gdansk. Given that Germany did not accept a 2nd spot in Varese, chances are quite good the USA will pick up a 2nd Men's spot in Baku. It's interesting that Estonia didn't accept a 2nd spot in Varese either. We'll see what happens with Germany & Estonia when it comes to Gdansk, but it's looking even better for the USA to pick up a 2nd spot there too.

With Dance... It's really interesting that Italy is basically giving up most of their spots. They kept their 3 for Varese. It may be that they only plan on sending 4 teams out on the JGP - there's a pretty wide point gap between the top 4 junior age-eligible teams at their Nats and the last 2 teams. Meanwhile, Germany is holding onto all of their spots so far - probably aiming to give themselves some flexibility to assign teams to later JGPs if they have a minor injury in July or August that delays their season debut. We'll have to keep our eyes peeled to see whether or not Canada, who is next in line for a 2nd spot, picks up any (seems doubtful).

So, far, additional spots picked up -
Men - USA 2 (Ankara & Varese)
Women & Pairs - none
Dance - Ukraine 2 (Riga & Ankara), France 3 (Riga, Ankara & Bangkok), Canada 2 (Ankara & Bangkok)

As usual, the 4th-best nation--USA in the men's division-- is first alternate for extra men's spots. The U.S. gets an extra spot in Italy if they want it before Germany or Estonia are asked, even if they're received an additional spot at earlier event(s) as well.

ETA:
Adding the rule from the 2025-2026 JGP announcement
Additional Entries For Men and Women, if any ISU Member mentioned under a) to c) [federations who were among the top 10 nations in the results at 2025 Jr. Worlds] does not use its right to enter Skaters in the competition concerned, this entry will be given to the first ISU Member, mentioned under b) [nations who finished 4th-6th. For men, this was USA, GER, EST in that order] for an additional entry. If another ISU Member mentioned under a) to c) does not use its right to enter Skaters in the competition concerned, this entry will be given to the second ISU Member mentioned under b). If all ISU Members under b) receive the right of a second entry, all further places not used will not be considered for replacement. The order of priority as listed has to be observed.

That is not how the reallocation process works. This has been demonstrated in past seasons where it is clear that each JGP is not treated as a separate, individual event where the 1st alternate is given 1st dibs on any relinquished spots. It is done on a rotational basis - the 1st alternate moves to the back of the line for the next relinquished spot and does not get one unless & until the 2nd & 3rd alternates receive a reallocated spot or decline it.

ETA - last season, SUI was 1st in line for the Women, followed by ITA & USA. Only 2 spots were relinquished - 1 at JGP #5 in Gdansk and 1 at JGP #7 in Wuxi.

SUI got 1 spot reallocated at JGP #5 in Gdansk, then ITA picked up 1 reallocated spot at JGP #7 in Wuxi. If SUI had been given first rights of refusal for a 2nd spot in Wuxi, do you really believe, with their deep bench of talented junior women, they would have declined? No way.

Cheers to Mao Shimada. She has proved she is amazingly self-motivated. It must be really hard to have to be in juniors yet again. I have to believe she will be SO happy to finally be old enough for senior level competitions next year.

The new pairs team of Herrera/Khobta will represent Ukraine and have been assigned to JGP Bangkok & JGP Gdansk.

Belgium had assigned Lilou Remeysen to 2 JGPs - Ankara & Baku. Belgium only has 2 JGP spots for women, so this is a clear indication the Belgian fed feels she is the strongest junior woman they have despite this being her debut junior season.

ETA - Belgian fed JGP Selection can be found here - https://www.skatebelgium.be/uploads...ion_kbkf_2025.18_team_future_junior_-_jgp.pdf

JGP Ankara - Lilou Remeysen; Ilona Van Steenberghe (substitute)
JGP Baku - Lilou Remeysen; Ilona Van Steenberghe (substitute)

JGP Abu Dhabi - Denis Krouglov

Germany will have a test skate July 24 to July 27
Dance
Based on the nomination criteria it looks like there might by 5 dance teams.
First 3 get 2 spots right away. team 4 and 5 will only get a 2nd if they score 112 points or are in the first half of the field in their first event.

Bangkok and Baku will most likely not be used as already marked with a * meaning they need pre-approval to use.

Men
First 4 in the test skate get 1 assignment.
Based on the results their the best placed one seems to get the last event as well.
Reads a bit like AZE and THA may not be used.

Women
Top 2 in test skate get 1 assignment.
If the score a top 10 in the first event they get a 2nd one otherwise the 3rd from the test skate gets one.

Women seems to be really though as I can think of at least 4 ladies that could do really well.

Pairs
Three spots in total.
the teams have to show both programs and will be told afterwards the nomination.
I think there are 3 possibly 4 teams assuming Löwenherz / Löwenherz are still skating.
Novice Team Krebs/Trofimov seems to be moving up plus 2 new teams including Hermann / Hermann.

There is a rule in the announcement that top 8 finishers from Junior Worlds get two spots and don't have to take part in the qualifying. This only applies to Genrikh Gartung, and he has mentioned recently in a Russian interview that his goal for this season is to qualify for the JGPF as well as competing in senior competitions. So he should get the two other spots.

Grimm & Rodin are still age-eligible for junior. Will they be there?

Does he have his release? If he wasn't able to get it from the RFSF to skate for China, why would we think he'd be able to get it to skate for Germany? It's not like the German fed is flush with the cash necessary to grease those Russian wheels.

Just realized that the French Masters entry list for pairs confirms that Ehrhard/Pellegris will be back on the JGP again this season, which is a good decision for them.

Actually it's not him cannot get his release from Russia but China wasn't intend to apply one in the first place.
The former director of the Winter Sports Management Center was investigated for corruption related to the naturalization of foreign athletes at that moment, so China was not supportive to recruit a foreign ice dancer.
But now with his marriage and the support of Germany maybe it will be easy for him to get his release in time.

Gotcha. Well, I would presume that Grimm/Rodin would certainly be given 2 JGP assignments by the German fed after some monitoring this summer, if that's what they want & they can get the release for Rodin. I don't think he was mentioned in the Russian news thread in May when their Exec Board last met to approve any releases, so it may be that the German fed's request came too late and it won't be granted until December when the RFSF Exec Board next meets.

It all comes to the decision of Russian federation. It is not as easy as you think. The next date for release will be at the end of this year. They already missed the deadline for May

Russian federation may not release him at all. Look at the complicated situation with Sofia Titova.

Is this the one that happened in 2024?

I'd be a little surprised if they don't release him given he's married to Darya Grimm, his new partner. They have to realize he's not coming back to Russia to train or compete in the future unless the marriage falls apart.

There is always a lack of ice dance men, if they consider he has a potential, there is a possibility he wont be released.

Do the officials care about his personal life?

I’m not sure they’d be seeing a great amount of potential in him, his domestic results were nothing special. So it’s not like it’s a Dario Cirisano situation. Anna Rumak was repeatedly beating him and she’s got her release for France already.

Women are expendable, though. If a man who had his results lately was released, that would be a more compelling argument.

But it is true that Germany has little to offer :bribe: or :blocjudge-wise.

Let's be real - Rodin is no Cirisano, who is the only recent example we have of the RFSF denying one of their ice dance men a release. I expect that he'll get his release in December.
