Programs that jumped the shark?

Have you ever thought about a program by your favorite skaters or skaters you admire that totally jumped the shark?

One that stands out for me that’s the most obvious is Michelle Kwan and the Beatles short program. When she debuted that I was like what in Sam Hill is going on around here?

For me, that was definitely an example.

What about for the rest of you?

Krylova and Ovsiannokov ending their Carmen free dance with (her/him?) pulling a bright red scarf out. SO OBVIOUS and OVER DRAMATIK. But of the times I guess.

The Duchesnays Olympic free dance to West Side Story.

It was such a step backwards for a team known for their daring and innovation.

A shame because the professional routine they debuted the following season was outstanding.

Ashley’s Moulin Rouge is the obvious answer.
From favorites or skaters you admire.

Otherwise I'd like to add Hip Hip Chin Chin, Spartacus, Samson and Delilah, Sweet Dreams, Exogenesis, Romeo and Juliet, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and "Black Swan".

I didn't even know she ruined The Red Violin (it's from 2013 worlds, so makes sense I'd erased it from my mind). Quite literally the only skater I enjoyed La La Land from though, hilarious that she got left off the Olympics the one time I didn't wish she'd vanish already.

For a serious answer, I'd like to say Kwan doing Beatles is correct. Others for me include

Arakawa's Fantaisie Impromptu LP.
Yuna's Miss Saigon.
Nearly everything Mao did with TAT, but especially that Masquerade Waltz LP.
Hanyu's 100x repetitions, and I didn't like either of his Beijing Olympic programs.
Uno's Bolero.

Berezhnaya/Sikharulidze's medley to Charlie Chaplin was pretty weak and unmemorable compared to the real thing. There were also some professional programs by Scott Hamilton and Kurt Browning that were hammy and OTT.

To me, "jumped the shark" means a very popular skater doing a very cliched program. The first one that springs to me for me is Grishuk/Platov "Memorial" from 1997/98.

That’s one interpretation for sure. The way I always kind of interpret it is something that goes offbrand or something that does not seem true or authentic to the theme or person or show.

Coming up with a program that’s so off course that’s not up to par with their previous work.

Thank you @AngieNikodinovLove (ANL) for giving us a thought-provoking topic to discuss. I'm not saying that b/c you are my bestie or because I want harem access.

There are so many to choose from, because I think it's easy to hit a stinker of a program every now and then, especially over a longer career.

Some that come to mind - the Pap/Ciz RD from 2016-17, with the swing/blues program. It never really seemed like they were confortable with it.

Mariah's Britney B**** - very out of the box, shark jumping for the usual ice princess programs.

Aliona/Robin had some misses, Send in the Clowns, the weird Bolero, Lost in Space - although i liked their rando Pink Panther.

Duhamel/Radford - the Non, je ne regrette rien in 16-17 wasn't their brand of skating.

Jason Brown - the Simon & Garfunkel FS from 18-19

Medvedeva - Orange Colored Sky - putting this here because it was the same season as the above when she and Brown were under Orser for the first time.

Awwww Bestie!!!!!!

Are you sure you won’t come to Prague with me and ditch the Olympics? Hey fellow FSU’ers convince him to ditch the Olympics and come with me to Czech Republic.

OK, I’m gonna go over your responses here at dinner.

😘

The idiom "jumping the shark", or "shark jumping", or to "jump the shark"; means that a creative work or entity has evolved and reached a point in which it has exhausted its core intent and is introducing new ideas that are discordant with or an extreme exaggeration (caricature) of its original theme or purpose.

There was nothing cliche about Fonzie jumping the shark. It was a monumentally bad idea for a plot.

For me, the program that jumped the shark was Domnina and Shabalin's 2009-10 Original Dance: fake music, racist content, and the glorification of domestic violence. That was Ice Dancing at its very worst.

You have some I did not even think of. Regarding Mariah was that her first one with Adam? I do remember being a little shocked when I first saw that program. Yes.

And yes, I think Orser gave both of them programs and did not really know who they were as skaters although we did.

I remember Eric and Megan, but I need to go back and watch that program as I do remember it. But I think you’re right, that program definitely seemed off power with your previous work.

Now this is interesting I would say the pink Panther was

I am deleting some of my responses because I wanna think about this team a bit more. They had some interesting choices that were real eye openers, but I need to think more about them. I do remember the pink Panther seeming the one program outside their circle.

Yeah, I didn’t want to be pedantic, but I’ve been confused about this thread. People seem to be using several conflicting definitions of “jumped the shark.” Your example is along the lines of what I’ve been thinking.

Olga Markova skating to “Go Down Moses / Let My People Go” in a feather boa is another one. What did she think the song was about?

I also thought about Nicole Bobek’s Evita, with a brief time warp back to Christopher Columbus and 1492.

Probably every Sarah Hughes program since Robin always used lyrical and ballet music for someone with absolutely zero sense of line or carriage.
