Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Just got back from watching Deadpool & Wolverine. Being that it is still it's opening weekend and probably 349,938,859 people are still going to see it before Monday, my review will be in spoiler.

My overall rating for Deadpool & Wolverine is 8.9/10.

It wouldn't surprise me if this ends up being my favorite "popcorn movie" of 2024. I don't think it was quite as good as my favorite movie so in 2024 (Dune: Part 2 - I gave it a 9.3/10), but I'm glad I saw it in the theater. I watched it in 3D and while I enjoyed wearing my 3D glasses, I don't think it's worth the extra price.

Deadpool & Wolverine, unlike previous Marvel movies, is Rated R. And BOY did it deserve it. The swearing is A LOT. The sexual innuendos are A LOT. And I'm saying this as someone who has a fairly high tolerance for raunch. I'm not sure I would watch it with a minor unless I watched it first. Actually, I didn't see anyone in my theater younger than about 25.

The soundtrack is an ode to Gen Xers & Millennials. I'm slightly not sure if it worked for viewers who are younger than about age 35. Deadpool's opening fight scene to N'SYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" and Deadpool & Wolverine's fight scene with the Deadpool variants to Madonna's "Like a Prayer" were belly laughs. But did it work viewers younger than 30? I'm curious to know how younger adults reacted to it.

The fight scene between Deadpool & Wolverine in the Honda Odyssey was beyond 😂 🤣 🤪.

I don't want to spoil things too much, but there's an ode to some past superheroes. I'll give this away: When Wesley Snipes walked in as Blade, half the audience my theater clapped and cheered. Deadpool also does a fair bit of "breaking the fourth wall". I enjoyed Emma Corrin's performance as "Nova" - I typically get nervous when an actor does their first superhero film, it either works extremely well or it fails. But Corrin convinced my of Nova's evilness and the "fingers in the skulls" she does multiple times works in her ability to make you :yikes:.

Make sure you stay during the credits. There's a montage of behind the scene footage from previous X-Men movies and then after the credits, Deadpool shows up to show proof to the audience that he really didn't get Johnny Storm (played by Chris Evans) killed. It was pissing Deadpool off throughout the movie that everyone blamed him.

At Deadpool & Wolverine right now. There are way too many kids in here. Did people not learn from the first 2 movies??

(Being that it’s no longer in its opening weekend, I’ll post about this movie out of spoiler)

Now that you’ve seen Deadpool & Wolverine, aren’t you even more 😬 that a lot of kids were there? Yes, there wasn’t sexuality explicitly shown, but verbally it was quite there throughout the film. Especially, among other things, Deadpool’s comments about how Nova was doing her fingers through the skulls. 😳 And the swearing, while funny, was A LOT.

I think part of the problem is that the “R” rating has been so used that some people are like “MEH? So there’s some violence?” There’s been complaints about how independent films are more likely to get an “R” or even “NC-17” ratings than films showing the same kind of content and how those MPAA ratings affect their box office performance.

Now that I’ve thought about the movie some more, the one complaint that I have is how the TVA timelines and multiverse were presented as fuzzy to me. I think someone who was brand new to Marvel movies would have been a bit confused.

Like I posted earlier, I quite enjoyed this movie and I think it was a great improvement over what Marvel has done over the last few years. But I can’t rate it about a 9.0/10.

Meanwhile, it appears that the bromance between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is genuine. 😆

And they even have puppies! 👱🏼‍♂️ 🧔🏻 🐶 🐶

A bit of a shocker!

Yes, it is. But Downey has been hinting recently that he's not quite done with the MCU. I guess this is what he meant. A lot of people were assuming that he would be Tony Stark/Iron Man in an alternate timeline/universe, but no. Although, given Doom's comic book ties to Iron Man, I guess that aspect's still not quite off the table. It's an interesting development.

You think that's bad, in Canada it's rated 14A because our ratings system works differently than yours.

I've seen kids that I've thought were too young to be at a Deadpool movie at every Deadpool movie I've seen. This really is just a continuing trend.
And…..here’s the trailer for Joker: Folie À Deux!

YEP, Warner Brothers is campaigning hard for Lady Gaga to get a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. 😉
As long as Amy Adams wins Best Lead Actress for Nightbitch Lady Gaga can do whatever she wants.

I don't even know if Nightbitch will be good, I just want Amy Adams to win the Oscar she deserved to win for Arrival. I know she wasn't nominated, but this is my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Teaser trailer - A Complete Unknown

So…..is this coming out this year to get Timothee Chalamet in for Best Actor at the next Oscars? That race already looks insane. Also, I don’t think it’s making the fall festival circuit (Telluride, Venice, etc.).
It looks like you were dead on about Chalamet getting early Oscar buzz for this movie.

I'm not opposed, it just makes me sad that his work in Dune 2 is going to get overlooked. I thought he was sooooo good as Paul Atreides, particularly this time around. He really showed the character's arc from innocent, sweet boy who loves Chani and just wants to be a good Fremen warrior, to dark and slightly sinister demigod who has fully embraced his destiny, however reluctantly.

I think biographical roles tend to get preferred for awards season. I understand it, because it can be hard to get a person correct, especially if the person is still alive or is there are a lot of people still alive who remember them (MLK, Jr., Queen Elizabeth II, and Margaret Thatcher are some examples).

I finally saw Deadpool/wolverine and it was eh. It was not as clever and funny as they thought it was. Kind of a shame phase 4 didn’t work out because I really liked the different styles they had in Shang Chi, Loki and Eternals.

On another note, Film Threat has aligned itself with the Fandom Menace (a bunch of rage tubers who constantly whine about their favorite IPs casting BIPOCs). I saw Chris and Alan at comic con signing at the table of Gabe Eltaeb, a former DC colorist who quit because they made Superman’s son bisexual and who was almost kicked out of comic con for harassing another artist.

I recently watched The Green Mile with Tom Hanks, and wow, what a film. It’s set in the 1930s and follows Paul Edgecomb, a prison guard on death row, and John Coffey, this huge guy with a gentle heart and some kind of magical power. Michael Clarke Duncan as Coffey really pulls at your heartstrings, and Tom Hanks is great, as always.

The movie is directed by Frank Darabont, the guy behind The Shawshank Redemption, so it’s got that same deep, emotional vibe. The pacing is slow, but it works because you really get to know the characters. It deals with big themes like justice and compassion, and it makes you think about capital punishment and miracles.

The Green Mile is a real emotional ride. Some scenes are tough to watch, but they’re important to the story. It’s one of those films that makes you reflect on life. Definitely have some tissues handy, because it’s a tearjerker. If you haven’t seen it, you should check it out.

Yeah. It took me a while to get into it but I did by the 3/4 point and the ending had me tearing up a bit but I think there were a lot of issues with it and it took things I tolerated in former Deadpool movies or that even worked in moderation and turned them up to 11 so that they kept pulling me out of the movie.

There's going to be a Shang Chi 2! I'm so excited. Loved that movie.

So do they call themselves the Fandom Menace (which would be cringe) or is that just your name for them (which would be clever)? ;)

Borderlands sounds my kind of movie! :slinkaway

I feel like the “popcorn movies” so far in 2024 (The Fall Guy, Twisters, Deadpool & Wolverine, and I’m assuming Borderlands and later Wicked) have been MUCH better than ones in previous years.

It Ends With Us looks painful to watch. I don’t care if it stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. IMHO, it’s hard to pull off a domestic violence movie that makes people want to watch.

Interesting to me they would open this in early September. Eons ago (when I worked in a movie theater in college) September is where studios sent movies they regarded as stinkers to die. With kids and college students back in school it's difficult to do good weekday business, and even weekend biz is generally slower with high school/college sports back in the mix (especially at the start of school years). I'm guessing they are hoping it will have legs and play to good size crowds through mid-late October?

Update: We now have a release date for “A Complete Unknown”.

If they want this to be hyped for awards season, they are timing it perfectly.
