Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

I just struggle with a 1 event gymnast. How long has Nedoroscik only done pommels? Any reason? Just curious…

My issue is if anyone else gets injured…
Depends on when the injury happens. There will be alternates. I’m ok if Stephen gets the spot. He earned it under the criteria. Blame the selection criteria, not the gymnast.

Yeah, I think the MAG criteria is maybe TOO specific and data-driven rather than considering that there are SIX apparatus.
ITA.

I think Terry said that two of the scenarios were only five-hundredths of a point apart. It would be stupid to make a decision based just on that, so I hope they would be taking a variety of factors into account.

I posted all of the criteria before. If the two data sets spit out the same top team, they have no ability to take any factors into account.

I expect the women's team selection to take less time because they have like 8 people left anyway
I would think that they've already discussed it a lot. They probably are assuming at this point that Simone, Jordan, Suni, and Jade are going and it's really just a question of the fifth person unless there are some major suprises tomorrow.

so you’ve got the auto qualifier first. If the athlete who has the highest combined four day total is also in the top 3 apparatuses, they automatically qualify and 4 remaining gymnasts are Selected using the math. If not, all 5 are selected using the math.

  • There are two data sets. One averaging the best 3 out of 4 from each athlete and one averaging all 4 from each athlete. (No highest score, trials only, etc)
  • They create the top 5 scoring teams in the 5-3-3 format for each data set.
    • If there is an auto qualifier, only teams with that person are considered.
    • Any team that can’t field 4 gymnasts on every apparatus is eliminated unless it’s 0.5 points higher than the next highest.
  • If the highest scoring team in the two data sets are the same, that team is AUTOMATICALLY SELECTED with no discussion.
  • If the highest from the two data sets are separated by more than two points, the highest of the two is automatically selected.
If neither happens, it goes to discretion, with factors that can be considered including:
  • Trials only scores
  • Total team d score
  • International experience
  • Results from other competitions

Interestingly, injury petitions are allowed for men.

Reminder of the criteria I posted a few pages ago.

I wonder if Khoi or Yul or someone could file an injury petition and that could push them to discretionary?
