so you’ve got the auto qualifier first. If the athlete who has the highest combined four day total is also in the top 3 apparatuses, they automatically qualify and 4 remaining gymnasts are Selected using the math. If not, all 5 are selected using the math.
- There are two data sets. One averaging the best 3 out of 4 from each athlete and one averaging all 4 from each athlete. (No highest score, trials only, etc)
- They create the top 5 scoring teams in the 5-3-3 format for each data set.
- If there is an auto qualifier, only teams with that person are considered.
- Any team that can’t field 4 gymnasts on every apparatus is eliminated unless it’s 0.5 points higher than the next highest.
- If the highest scoring team in the two data sets are the same, that team is AUTOMATICALLY SELECTED with no discussion.
- If the highest from the two data sets are separated by more than two points, the highest of the two is automatically selected.
If neither happens, it goes to discretion, with factors that can be considered including:
- Trials only scores
- Total team d score
- International experience
- Results from other competitions
Interestingly, injury petitions are allowed for men.
