Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Oppenheimer 100%

I’m actually torn about Actor. Waiting for SAG

Also waiting for what happens at BAFTA.

I’m thinking Best Actor is probably between Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers). Best Actress is probably between Emma Stone (Poor Things) and Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon).

Yes Stone has all the late momentum but everyone can see all the nominations for Killers so that helps her. No Gladstone at BAFTA possibly because of jury makes that a Stone won. So it’s all SAG there.

So predictions for best movie for Academy Awards?
I think (and I know these are obvious choices):
Best Picture: Oppenheimer
Best Director: Christopher Nolan
Best Actor: I think this will be the closest race but I think Paul Giamatti will get it
Best Actress: Emma Stone (again a close race between her and Lily Gladstone but I feel like the race is swaying in favor of Emma)
Best Supporting Actor: RDJ
Best Supporting Actress: Da’Vine Joy Randolph

"Maestro"....A boring movie about an interesting man. 'Nuf said. Cooper and Mulligan were brilliant, but it wasn't enough to save the movie for me.

I thought Maestro was a good movie (I would give it an 8.2/10), but it screamed “Bradley’s desperate for an Oscar!” too much for me to rate it any higher.

This has nothing to do with awards season, but I watched Leave the World Behind last night and WOW what a tense film. I tried reading the book when it came out, and the writing style was so distracting I couldn't get more than 25 pages in.

Julia Roberts was really good in it - I can't recall if we've ever seen her allowed to be so unlikeable. Or look her age, for that matter. Mahershala Ali was also great.

A lot of people seem to hate the ending, but I thought it was appropriate.

He is a really good actor though. I really enjoyed watching this movie maybe watched it a couple of years ago? I’m thinking I’m going to re-watch it actually.

Just watched "Past Lives". What a beautiful movie about long lost friends reuniting. It's really lovely to see a movie about nice people. Agreed that Greta Lee was amazing, but so were the two male lead roles. Very sweet film.
Agreed. I’m glad it didn’t go in the direction that perhaps a lesser film would and was really about the impact of memory and past friendships and cultural identity. Really great performances and Celine Song is a talented director and writer.

The only movie I have seen is 'Oppenheimer' and it was very disappointing. I feel it is very overrated, possibly because of the historical significance of the title character. The direction, screenplay and editing were the main reason this movie does Not work for me. It felt like it was created with the goal of winning the Oscar. I felt that it will get the Oscar but not because it truly deserves it.

It has some positives.

Cillian Murphy was believable as Oppie, though not as handsome as the real life Oppie. Looks don't matter. Acting does.

The atom bomb test in the desert was created/presented very well.

Robert Downey Jr. Deserves a supporting actor Oscar, but he may not get it just because of the way Oscars are given.

Negatives-

As I Already mentioned, the way Jean Tatlock was presented really bothered me. I have an odd connection with the real life characters. I never liked the real life Kitty, and did not like the actress for the supporting actress nomination.

Since I have not seen any other nominated movie, I can't do a fair comparison, but I do believe that Oppenheimer will win lots of Oscars, and I will hate watching the show.

I do want to see a few of the nominated movies. Barbie, Maestro, and May be Poor things. I think Carey Mulligan will win the actress award because she was denied it couple years ago. Personally I would love to see Annette Bening win it, just because she has been so good for so long.

Agree with you @Vash01 that Robert Downey Jr. deserves the best supporting actor Oscar. He was amazing. I think you would like "Past Lives". Really a lovely movie.

Has anyone seen American fiction and Killers of the flower moon? They are nominated for SAG.

ETA- I have been away the last three months. Didn't have access to my iPad most of that time. Please don't mind it if my questions sound stupid or repetitive. I have just started reading the posts today.

Watched Joy Ride. Some really LOL moments with me giggling all the way through. The four women were wonderful. Some culturally specific jokes and bits really got to me. The swing. The tattoo. Loved it.

I've seen both. I preferred American Fiction, which was very well done and thought provoking. Killers of the Flower Moon is a tough subject, and is a movie that made me angry. But the acting was top notch all around, and Lily Gladstone is a masterpiece.

Watched Lisa Frankenstein last night. An enjoyable throwback to the old comedies you’d constantly watch on HBO cause nothing else was on.

"Juniper" really gets to you with its story about Sam and his tough-love grandma, played by Charlotte Rampling. She's in a wheelchair, and they clash at first, but the film beautifully explores how they start to connect. Rampling's performance is top-notch, bringing out a mix of hardness and care that's pretty compelling.

The movie's slow at times but keeps you hooked with its real talk and stunning scenes. It's not your typical feel-good film, but it's got moments that make you smile and think about family in a deeper way.

Ended up reflecting on my own relationships after watching. "Juniper" is worth your time if you're into stories about family and personal growth. And yeah, it might just make you want to reach out to your own grandparents.

"Backstabbing for Beginners" offers a gripping look into the tangled web of UN politics, following the journey of Michael, a young optimist played convincingly by Theo James. He stumbles upon corruption within the oil-for-food program, pulling the viewer into a world of moral complexities and intrigue. The film skillfully blends elements of drama and thriller, providing a thought-provoking glimpse into global politics. It's a bit heavy at times but remains engaging and enlightening. A great choice if you're into stories that challenge you to think about the shades of grey in our world.
