2023-24 ISU Junior Grand Prix

Remember that any nation in A-C categories (basically the top 10 nations at junior worlds, see JGP announcement) can relinquish a spot to B nations (nations finishing 4-6). Sometimes, a relinquished spot comes not from a country that had 2 spots at an event, but a lower-ranked country who only had one spot and decided not to use it.

Ahhh, good catch! It is possible that Swizterland picked up the 2nd spot in Osaka from Georgia (can't imagine that France or Estonia would give up a spot and we know Canada is using all 6 of their spots for the Women).

@Gris - maybe the CFSA changed its mind about not sending any skaters to Istanbul. They are eligible to send 1 man, 2 women & 2 pairs. It would make sense to give a 2nd man a 2nd assignment, give 2 more women 1 assignment, and give 2 assignments to a 4th pairs team (if they have 4 jr-age-eligible pairs teams, that is).

Skipping Yerevan makes complete sense, though - they could only send 2 women to that event, so it would be an expensive trip for the discipline that already has the most opportunities for their skaters and no other disciplines represented.

. At this point, it only remains to be seen whether Italy will use both of their spots in Budapest or Gdansk - the USA would pick up a 2nd spot if Italy only uses 1 at either of these events.

Italy - 2 at Linz; 1 at Bangkok, Istanbul & Osaka; guaranteed 2 at Budapest, Gdansk & Yerevan - relinquished 3 spots so far; could use up to 11 but probably will not

I wouldn't be surprised to see Italy giving up something in Yerevan but I would be surprise if they relinquish spots in Budapest and Gdanks given they have accepted one spot in Bangkok and Osaka. Budapest and Gdansk are much easier and cheaper to reach from Italy (direct flights) than Asia.

My question with Italy is do they have enough junior men to use up 10 spots, especially with Memola definitely moving up to seniors. They have Zich and ????

Matteo Nalbone (2005) and Tommaso Barison (2005) did JGPs last season.
Buttiero Khorev etc was born on January 2010.
The 4th at 2022 Junior Nationals was Nikita Dossena (June 2008).

The Osaka JGP #4 announcement is up -

The mystery of how Switzerland gained a second Women's spot remains since China and Korea are both listed as using 2. Japan, of course, has 3 as host. USA, Georgia, Canada, France & Estonia are each listed as using 1 spot, so Switzerland didn't pick up a 2nd spot from any of the countries that are eligible to relinquish one. The only other possible explanation would be that since Japan, as host, automatically gets 3, Switzerland gets Japan's guaranteed 2nd spot by default? I dunno... 🤷‍♀️

Canada, Korea AND the USA each gained a 2nd spot in Men - Italy is using ZERO spots for the Men here 🤯, and we already knew about Switzerland using only 1, and Japan gets a 3rd spot as host.

The USA and France each gained a 2nd spot in Ice Dance - Canada is using both their spots, Korea is using 1, Great Britain is using 1, and Czechia is using ZERO - not necessarily a surprise as I was pretty sure that Czechia didn't have 7 junior dance teams (they had 4 including the Mrazeks last season, plus 1 Intermediate Novice team, competing through the fall).

The Budapest JGP #5 Announcement is also up!

Men - Italy, Japan & Switzerland all confirmed to have 2 men, so no reallocated spots.

Women - China, Japan & Korea all confirmed to have 2 women, so no reallocated spots.

Ice Dance - Canada, France & USA each have 2 spots, Czechia & Korea are using 1 spot, and Great Britain passed on a 2nd spot again.

Definitely a lot more clarity on how many spots are going to be reallocated in each discipline with the Osaka & Budapest announcements today.

All told, we have a pretty good grasp of how the extra spots for the Men are likely to shake out -
Japan - 3 at Osaka; 2 at the other 6 JGPs - will use 15 overall
Switzerland - 0 at Bangkok & Yerevan; 2 at Linz, Istanbul, Budapest & Gdansk (4 events); 1 at Osaka - relinquished 5 spots total; will use 9 overall
Italy - 2 at Linz; 1 at Bangkok, Istanbul & Budapest; guaranteed 2 at Gdansk & Yerevan - relinquished 5 spots so far; could use up to 9 but might not
Canada - 2 at Bangkok, Istanbul, Osaka & Yerevan; 1 at Linz; 1 at Budapest & Gdansk - picked up 4 spots for 11 total
USA - 2 at Bangkok, Osaka & Yerevan; 1 at Linz & Istanbul & Budapest; guaranteed 1 at Gdansk - picked up 3 spots so far and a strong possibility of picking up at 4th at Gdansk, will wind up with either 10 or 11 spots total
Korea - 2 at Osaka; 1 at every JGP - eligible to receive a 2nd at Bangkok, Linz, Istanbul & Budapest but declined - picked up a 2nd spot at Osaka, but will probably decline 2nd spots for Gdansk & Yerevan and finish up the JGP with 8 spots overall

With regard to the Women -
Japan - 3 at Osaka; 2 at the other 6 JGPs - will use 15 overall
Korea - 2 at every GP - will use all 14
China - 2 at every GP - their internal selection document indicates they will not be sending a delegation to either Istanbul or Yerevan, but the Istanbul selection document has them using their 2 spots there; it's been confirmed Switzerland gained a 2nd spot in Yerevan, so it would appear that China has definitely declined those 2 spots - expected to use 12 overall
Switzerland - 2 at Osaka & Yerevan; 1 at Bangkok, Linz, Istanbul & Budapest; guaranteed 1 at Gdansk - picked up 2 for a total of 9 spots
USA - should have 2 at Yerevan; 1 at Bangkok, Linz, Istanbul, Osaka & Budapest; guaranteed 1 at Gdansk - picked up 1 for a total of 8 overall
Georgia - 1 at Bangkok, Linz, Istanbul, Osaka & Budapest; guaranteed 1 at Gdansk & Yerevan - probably will not pick up any additional spots

As far as Dance is concerned -
Canada - 2 at every JGP - will use 14 overall
Czechia - 2 at Bangkok & Istanbul; 1 at Linz & Budapest; 0 at Osaka; guaranteed 2 at Gdansk & Yerevan - relinquished 4 spots so far and will use 10 spots at most
Korea - 1 at Bangkok, Linz, Istanbul, Osaka & Budapest; guaranteed 2 at Gdansk & Yerevan - relinquished 5 spots so far and there's no reason to believe they will use more than 1 at the remaining JGPs or possibly none, could use up to 9 spots but will probably only use 6 or 7
Great Britain - 1 at Bangkok, Linz, Istanbul, Osaka & Budapest; guaranteed 1 at Gdansk & Yerevan - have not accepted a 2nd spot at the 1st 5 JGPs even though they're first in line, so the question now is whether or not they'll take a 2nd at any of the JGPs?
USA - 2 at Bangkok, Linz, Istanbul, Osaka & Budapest; guaranteed 1 at Gdansk & Yerevan - picked up 5 spots so far and there's no reason to think they won't pick up at least 1 more for 13 spots total
France - 1 at Bangkok; 2 at Linz, Istanbul, Osaka & Budapest; guaranteed 1 at Gdansk & Yerevan - picked up 4 spots so far and it's a strong possibility they will pick up at least 1 more for a total of 12 spots
*** Israel declined their guaranteed spot at Istanbul, which is how both France and the USA picked up a 2nd spot there

Biggest winner in the "how many extra spots can we pick up?" sweepstakes is USA Ice Dance, with French Ice Dance in the silver medal position, Canadian Men winning bronze, and the USA Men grabbing pewter (seems appropriate to award a pewter since it is a US discipline coming in 4th, lol).

Skate Austria is looking for volunteers to assist with JGP Linz -

Alieva/Barshak GEO will be competing in Istanbul and Budapest per their IG story that they've bought their airline tickets.

Entries aren't due for Bangkok until this Friday. There is still time.
I doubt that any of the Ukrainian skaters will go to Thailand or Japan. The Ukrainian federation, even in good times, refused to travel to such distant countries.

Fair point. How many junior dance teams do they have? Here is what Ukraine has allotted for the JGP -

Bangkok - 1 dance team
Linz, Istanbul & Gdansk - 1 man, 1 woman, 1 dance team, 2 pairs teams
Osaka - 1 man, 1 dance team
Budapest - 1 man, 1 dance team, 2 pairs teams
Yerevan - no entries

Dance - 6 spots. Theoretically, 3 dance teams could get 2 assignments each if there are 3 teams that they want to send out on the JGP, but if they don't have 3 teams, then not sending a team to Bangkok or Osaka makes good financial sense.

Pairs - it would be lovely if Ukraine had 4 pairs teams, but I'll be surprised if they use more than 2 of the 8 spots they have.

Men - 5 spots - could lose 1 spot if they don't send anyone to Osaka, which would be a shame.

Women - 3 spots - those are going to be premium to come by for the Ukrainian junior girls.

We definitely have 3 dance teams: Pinchuk/Pogorielov, Pidgaina/Koval and Rekunova/Fediankin. The last couple is the only candidate to travel to Korea to participate in the Youth Olympic Games. So 6 spots would be useful to us, but I'm afraid that there will be no one in Thailand.

^^^ Thanks for including 2022-23 JPN Nationals placements @Gris! :) - making JGP debuts for Japan this season are:

Women: Yo Takagi, Haruna Murakami (singles this year), Rena Uezono (also the Novice A Girls champion in Oct. 2022)
Men: Taiga Nishino, Daiya Ebihara (he also was Eastern Section J4 in Nov. 2022)
Ice Dance: Sara Kishimoto/Atsuhiko Tamura

Machine translation re. JGP selection (copied from JSF's international selection document that's linked in post #26 of the Japanese news thread):
"Men's and women's single pairs will be selected at the dispatch selection meeting held at the end of June 2023.
Selection will be made with comprehensive consideration."

:D

To be honest, I think it's time for ISU to allow spots relocation. At least 1 or 2. This would allow poor federations to send more athletes.

It's not uncommon to have the European athletes choose to compete at the European JGPs, as they have that option. (In dance, we usually only get the Russians at the non-European JGP because they had to fill all their spots and then a few European teams that don't train in Europe). I'm sorry Ukraine won't be sending anyone to Bangkok. But I am glad there is more than one JGP outside of Europe this season.

Japan might attract more competitors than Thailand as Japan is such a skating mecca.

I can't say I agree with you. This would unfairly benefit European feds more than any other feds since usually 5-6 of the 7 JGPs are in Europe. It is ridiculously expensive for Asian feds, Australia, New Zealand, and Latin American feds to get their skaters to any of the European JGPs. Heck, even the Korean fed (presumably one of the wealthier feds) doesn't have the money to pay the travel expenses for all of their skaters.

It appears the French JGP selection is happening in Courchevel this weekend.

Initial thoughts - both the Men and Women’s fields are stacked with at least 9-10 possible medalists once we get the Korean entries. Ice Dance is a really light field (absolutely shocked at the Canadian teams and the subs listed given the results at their Next Gen Camp simulated competition this weekend), but there is at least a good battle set up for gold between Fradji/Forneaux and Neset/Markelov, while Hauer/Starr are, easily, the leading bronze medal contenders.
