Very glad they were found! That area is very rough terrain and very sparsely populated. Many others would not have survived.

Unfortunately according to one report one of the search dogs went missing. Hopefully someone finds him soon.

I can't imagine they would have survived were they not indigenous with some skills already taught to them for living in the area. But it is still remarkable, particularly given the very young age of some of the children.

Actually, even very young children can forage for themselves if they know what to do. I had friends who did their graduate work with the Mir Islanders (off the coast of New Guinea). Their two year old daughter fed herself foraging among the tidal pools with the other children. As soon as a child could walk, they started foraging. They ate what they caught. Sashimi at its best. Observing her and the other children made them reconsider archaeological foraging because the food children catch and eat wouldn't show up in the archaeological record. This made me reconsider quite a bit of my dissertation as well.

There is food to be had if you know where to look and don't have a cultural bias against eating what you find. Shelter would be the bigger issue, but it's not cold there so that's not the problem. The 13 year old is practically an adult by most indigenous standards and the 9 and 4 year old could have kept the baby fed. Sorry for the kids losing their parents and hope they have relatives to take them.

Watched this on msnbc just now. The youngest was 11 months old at the time of the crash and turned one year old during their struggle to survive. They showed the rescue team, though not the children. This is the best news I have heard this year.

I hope this doesn't sound cheap, but it could make a really good movie, with the 13 year old as the heroine.

Their father is quite upset that politicians and media are showing pictures of his children without (allegedly) his consent.

They should get his consent. These children are heros, but it should be upto their father whether their pictures should be made public. So far I have not seen their pictures.

Latest news is that the children are doing well and the food packages left for them helped. Also the search for Wilson the search dog continues.
