ISU Statement on Russia's war against Ukraine - Participation in international competitions of Skaters and Officials from Russia and Belarus

Can you provide examples of this disillusionment? After Putin launched the war, how many Russian skaters left Russia and expressed opposition to his actions?
Why focus on these visible public figures? I didn't mention them, nor do I think Russians solely consist of visible public figures.

Were you talking solely about Russian diaspora public figures who were supporting Putin when you said "The Russian diaspora has sunk this argument like the Moskva."? If so, then I'd like links, and I wonder in return how many visible Russian diaspora have been opposing him.

This article (which had been linked in the War on Ukraine thread in Politically Incorrect) is about a Russian diplomat. A public figure who does oppose the regime. https://www.foreignaffairs.com/russian-federation/sources-russia-misconduct-boris-bondarev

Yes, I do think many Russians probably did leave Russia after it started attacking Ukraine. https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/our-russian-fsu-posters-here.109489/page-2#post-6226157 This post talks about it, and posts from Russians on that thread are illuminating. "Forward thinking Russians" left... which is revealing as to why the propaganda is as effective as it is currently.

So my question is open again. How many diaspora Russians opposed Putin and in what ways? They may be less loud, but I'm sure they exist, and I won't be shocked they're being drowned by the loud and proud nationalists who are immune to the horrors of Russia, because they simply don't live there.

This is a skating forum so why shouldn't we question Russian skaters' responses?

I'm not claiming that Russian opponents to the war don't exist at all. Obviously they do. But where are the signs that they represent a majority?

Why are diaspora Russians so quiet that you have to ask this question? Why aren't they loudly declaring their opposition to Putin, like the Iranian diaspora in regard to the Iranian regime?

Because you factually didn't state that in your post, and I factually didn't ask a question that limited me to simply skaters' responses. You cannot move goalposts like that.

I would also say a Russian diplomat has much more at stake than a figure skater.

But where are the signs that they represent a majority?
Where are the signs they represent a minority? Why do you believe it's a minority? All I know is that the Putin-supporting diaspora is loud. Loudness doesn't mean majority to me.

I don't know they are "so quiet" at all. I don't keep up with it as much as Europeans do, I just know it's happening and I know it's awful.

I also wouldn't equate two different countries and two different peoples, two different scales of horror for scoring points against these people, assuming they exist of course.

No, it's 100% for being at that Plushenko show and it's stupid that they're put on this list for that.
Plushenko blindsided the skaters with his pro-war propaganda. Crappy thing to do.

I'm out of sympathy and excuses from Russia. They're constant talk about how figure skating will die within them and the constant playing the victim is disgusting.

I wish people would stop quoting Zhulin, he is just a despicable human being and was so even before the war. Just forget about his sorry existance.
No, I hope people keep spreading his quotes so that no one can forget how awful he is - because you know the ISU will let him get away with it. Let all the fans know so he'll be booed at competitions.

If they're disillusioned but can't express their true feelings because of a brutal dictator, why didn't they try to move to a country where they can freely express their views?
That's what all the people who lived in Russia that worked for my company did. They all moved pretty much immediately.

Zhulin is that the guy who was screwing Pasha Grischuk while skating with his wife at the olympics.
OMG will you please stop spreading these lies? Zhulin was screwing Navka (for whom he ultimately left Maya and married) in Lake Placid during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons (where Navka was training with Gezalian for Belarus, also under Natalia Dubova), and he confirmed it in his autobiography last year. Oksana and Evgeny had left Dubova and were training together in Moscow with Linichuk & Karponosov after a brief separation to skate with other partners (Evgeny briefly skated with Navka in Moscow but didn't board the plane with Team Dubova to Lake Placid and went back to skate with Oksana). Kind of hard to continue an affair separated by an ocean.

Zhulin did have a fling (and NOT his first affair on Maya...) with Oksana G that ended not long after the infamous Spago confrontation in LA at the end of the 1992 Tom Collins USA tour. Why CBS harped on his affair with Oksana during 1993 Worlds and the 1994 Olympics remains a mystery, but likely Team Dubova wanted to trash Oksana to boost the chances of Maya and Sasha to win Gold. At that point Navka was unknown, so there was no point in blaming her for the breakup of Maya's marriage as that wouldn't poison Grishuk/Platov in the eyes of the judges and the public.

"The #US has refused #visas for the #Russian delegation and the Russian Foreign Minister to attend a #UN Security Council meeting."

(Such a pity
:p
).

Good to see and hopefully indicative of what will happen in sports.

@Alilou and I have been busy with the suggestions made by several posters in this thread and are happy to debut the campaign - UpholdTheISUBan - please follow and share on your own social media!

We'd love for someone to make a suggestion for our first tweet and IG post, so feel free to brainstorm away!

If you two make Kinoshita academy and/or TV Asahi so much as whisper about this, I will personally protest if you aren't nominated for this year's Peace Prize.

Well, since I don't know Japanese, I don't have much hope in getting their attention. Maybe those who speak languages other than English can create some graphics for us to add????

Ukrainian sports site Tribuna.ua has its own data base with russian athletes (+ former athletes and officials) that support the war, with direct/indirect proves. I can't find it on their English version, this is in Ukrainian:

You could send your own tweets, and insta and FB comments, with the message. The whole point of this campaign is that everyone will participate. @Karen-W and I just put together something that will make it easier for people to voice their concerns #upholdtheban!

If you open the link to the amazing blog that @Karen-W created and click on links to the local broadcast partners of ISU you'll find TV Asahi on the list - please send them an insta message and/or tweet to let them know how you feel. If enough of us do it maybe they'll get the message.

As for Kinoshita Academy - here's the link to their contact page:

Curious to know why Kinoshita Academy? I don't know anything about them.

The dramatisation that you can find on Youtube of this is :biggrinbo

We know how Tutberidze does it, at least: head games. She gives a large group of competitively-minded girls selected for small frames to start with no guidance whatsoever in the kind of healthy eating they need to do to fuel their bodies properly for athletic work (the infamous "I don't control what they eat" [paraphrased]), while at the same time monitoring their weight gram by gram and not even day by day but hour by hour, relating every accomplishment and potential future accomplishment back to their ability to control it, and blaming every mistake and failure on their inability to control it, over and over and over again.

Unless they have outside voices helping them to resist and treat their bodies well, this creates an environment where the girls feel they need to starve themselves the vast majority of the time, except for when they shove down "bad" calorie-dense food so they have enough energy to get through training without passing out (e.g. Medvedeva and her one chocolate bar a day). So they constantly feel guilty for eating "bad things" that might make them gain weight, or "too much" because they weigh a bit more after eating lunch than they did before. We've seen that she can get them to the point where they treat water as a "bad" food. And they're also not getting the nutrients they need to grow and develop muscles and strength and endurance, or even just to think clearly - think of ordinary kids who go to school hungry and how hard they find it to learn, and now add a dayful of athletic labour on top of that, plus dehydration. Day after day after day after day. While Tutberidze keeps up the mind games.

She doesn't need to dope them to keep their bodies small. She gets inside their heads and gets them to do the work for her, and then blames them for lack of self-discipline yet again when biology finally overrides starvation and they start to grow and change shape anyway, exactly the way she knew they would. It's terrifying and grotesque and completely awful, but it doesn't require doping at al.
and yet they do dope

Oksana`s Baiul interview for TSL

It is logical that today the world of figure skating in russia competed in who would insult Oksana the most. Averbuch is currently in the lead :D

In the past, a great figure skater, but this does not mean that she is a great person. She discredited herself a long time ago when she began to throw mud at Tatyana Tarasova, who led her to the Olympic medal. So I'm no longer interested in what this person says

Since most of us don't have a lot of followers, I think the direct approach is good - to send your messages directly to whoever we think might be important.
but if you can make tweets on insta etc that would also be good - something to share.

I think best would be to keep it simple but to put out a post a day with a picture - maybe a skating picture of healthy and non-doped skaters? - with basically the same texts everyday and just small changes until there are more ideas.

We're not going down the doping route with this campaign. The suspected doping is not why the ISU banned Russian & Belarus skaters.

you do not have to mention it - but it is a big point that brings people in the skating world even MORE behind the ban so pictures of skating and those skaters might be a way to generate a lot of content and you need content to make an account big and post regularly.

I like very much your idea of a post a day. I can do that on FB, twitter, and insta with a total following of about 1000 followers. It's not much, and most of them are into travel or photography, not FS. But with every tweet and every insta comment I can tag people who would matter, or who would help spread the word.

I hope I understand how this works correctly. For instance: I could post a link to the blog @Karen-W created on twitter and tag Ashley Wagner and it would show up on her twitter feed, or draw her attention to it?

I know I could post one of the graphics from the blog (or a photo of a skater) on insta and tag a whole bunch of people though I'd probably only tag at most 2 or 3 at a time so it doesn't look like spam.

BTW in case you haven't looked - the blog has a whole new look! :cheer2:

We did set up a Twitter and IG account also, so we can definitely make posts from that account which people can re-share and also tag, to help gain traction to the effort.

We haven't posted anything yet because we wanted to make some updates based on private feedback we received, but that's on tap for this week.
