Daniel turns 21 tomorrow. Published yesterday in the "Lutz everyone!" figure skating blog (April 2, 2023) - "Sports.ru correspondent Maya Bagryantseva met with Daniel and tried to understand what kind of turbulence brought him to Moscow."

ETA that the link goes to the original article in Russian (it machine translates well enough).

I couldn’t find the English translation

He seems so young.

Plus I had to laugh about how his programs tell a story. I don't think the audience is getting his story. I mean did you know that his Armaggedon/Interstellar program was about saving the world? I sure didn't. We talked constantly in the PBP threads about how we didn't understand why those two pieces of music were put together. :D

...As if most programs tell a story these days? Every time those two pieces got brought up, someone mentioned the 'space' idea so at least there's that, compared to skaters plowing right through with zero story to tell.. even in their own heads.

White Crow was actually a really beautiful program and he has nice skating ability and fantastic spins. I think the classical stuff is where he does best, jarring jump technique aside. The first program Jason Brown gave him this year, to I Feel Love, ranks right up there as one of the most mismatched programs of any skater I've ever seen, and he rightfully dumped it ASAP.

I've said it a few times around the PBP threads when this first occurred, but I, too, want to know what happened in Egna that he left, hated the US, and didn't even want to go back to what had been producing him solid results.

I think this interview gives a bit insight into why the US didn't work out for him. But he's going to vacation with the family he lived with in the US, so I guess his experience on a personal level wasn't all bad. Sounds more like he felt there was too little coaching and too much freedom in the training, which might just be a difference in approaches, not that he "hated the US".

Generally from his artistic preferences, it seems he certainly is very interested in being an artistic and creative skater, so it seems it's his technical abilities that are holding him back (and at least on TV watching Worlds he seems to lack a lot of speed).

I don't quite get why'd he be drawn to Eteri of all coaches, but he seems rather insecure in his personality, so maybe he feels the strictness in training gives him stability or something.

I remember when he was in Sheffield he had his Yoga trainer with him, doing a session in his hotel room, saw that in his insta story, he seems to rely a lot on others and if I understood the interview correctly he felt left alone in Sheffield, cause none of his coaching team went there with him?

Hey, he's the one who says he wants to tell a story, not me! :D

He seems to somewhat worship her. I know that seems strange to some of us but it seems like she has fans in the skating community who consider training with her to be the ultimate. (Like I would feel if I could get Chrissie Wellington to train me in triathlon.)

I find that kind of strange, considering that Eteri hasn't produced any true male skating stars. Morisi Kvitelashvili has had more crashes than successes lately.

He's clearly getting financial, political, and moral support from Italian officials and insiders. I doubt he'd be in Russia if it meant they were against his move and would have withdrawn approval, let alone support. He's not taking a stand.
Rather desperate attempt for that team medal, I'm guessing.

"Not taking a stand" is taking a stand. In this case, he is taking a stand that "the political situation" and "Kamila" should not interfere with sport. He's as much of a lackey as Tutberidze's homegrown skaters.

Then it's the Italian federation that is taking a stand, and we should be worried about Russian presence at the Milan Olympics... Of course, Eteri's still present at competitions anyway, so ISU itself feels differently, not just Grassl and faceless Italian fed employees.

He's not saying, this is what I want, and I'm willing to give up Federation and personal sponsor support to fulfill my dream. He's being enabled and encouraged by TPTB in Italy in this pursuit.

The yoga trainer is also the president of the Egna skating club.

The impression I got from the interview is that he has no spiritual or psychological backbone; all in all the interview left a sad taste.

I am sorry to admit this, but I never liked his skating in general. Something substantial was missing .
And then he is talking that he want to be film producer and get Oscar!not that he has some particular idea he wants to realize in the movie, but he wants to win the Oscar... He is young. Let hope all this is growing pains.

Would be happy to help you but, unfortunately, I am not very well versed in technology.
On my computer i click on Google Translate which automatically shows up at the upper right corner.

Thanks. Didn’t know that. The view that popped up automatically said google couldn’t translate but will try one more time.
