From Russia With Love [#38]: Fall/Winter 2020

There were two very great skates, the double twist was very impressive. They deserved all those 6’s. I’m surprised the programmes are so long, they were nearly 4mins, in DoI instead UK it’s not even half that.

Tarasova had a lot to say on both routines. Isinbayeva must be a big star in Russia, to get on the panel, always thought she was a great competitor and champion.I can’t believe Navka is 45, she looks amazing. Who were the two male judges?

Nice to see Khokolova back skating and as bendy as ever. On a shallow note, Enbert is looking as good as ever.

Sinitsina/Katzalapov will star in Navka's New Year holidays show from Dec 30 to Jan 7th - "Scarlet Flower" (Russian fairy-tale similar to "Beauty and the Beast").

? They're skipping Nationals but starring in a show?

That's what the announcements say, and their photos in the participants list (scroll below).

Aliev is out of Russian Nationals, the article states "reasons unknown" (previously he tested positive for CVD).
Ouch. That is rough.

I wonder if the issue is not just being competition ready but the travel. Getting out to Chelyabinsk, doing whatever testing is needed to be cleared to compete, getting practice in - all that is a lot on top of having been off ice for so long. The show program probably requires less preparation but it's also in Moscow right? It being a week later probably makes a difference too, but I wonder if the biggest factor is just that it's less of a risk/impact logistically. Travel is a lot of strain when you've just been sick under ordinary circumstances much less these ones.

eta: Oops, looks like it's in Sochi. Well at least it's warm(er) there! :)

New film will debut in Russia during winter holidays. "Silver Skates" - 19th century romance and drama that takes place on ice skates. The content is pretty much a mix of classic russian literature, Rome & Juliette, Titanic and lots of skating. This is a long trailer that covers it all.
That looks really cool! I love those types of big sweeping historical romances. I can’t find any info on professional skaters involved as stunts or doubles - does anyone know?

It’s a bit odd. :)
I’m used to think that “The Silver Skates” are a book for children by Mary Mapes Dodge. I mean it was another story. OK, to say the truth I didn’t remember the name of the author (before googling it), but I do remember that this book exists and I see that even now Russian book stores offer it in more than one edition. I think a new name would be better for a new story.

The primary title of the Mary Mapes Dodge book is Hans Brinker...which was turned into a TV musical starring Dick Button in the 1950s, by the way...Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates.

I recognize the interiors of the Grand Duke Vladimir Palace in StP. Looks like some wonderful on-location filming.

Well, I see the covers of the books and audiobooks on a page of a Russian book store, and usually the title is just “The Silver Skates” in the translations (maybe they use the same translation), though sometimes the full title is saved.
I almost didn’t read comments about the movie, but I’ve seen a comment mentioning this book too.

Is Yagudin whining about Averbukh’s wedding on Instagram? Or being sarcastic? The translation isn’t strong, but I gather that he’s mad the bride and groom didn’t distance and that they kissed? 🤷🏼‍♂️

What does he think is going to happen on the wedding night? (which is not to mention whatever has most likely been happening before the wedding night as this isn't an 18th century novel :))

Aliev about his Nationals withdrawal in his own words: https://www.instagram.com/p/CJD0TA7AGvZ/

Machine translation:

I am very sorry that I will not be able to compete at the upcoming Russian Championship 2021. I tried and hoped that after an illness my form would not go away and my body would not be exhausted. to beat the way I want !!! I tried to deceive nature, but she turned out to be wiser. 💭
Thank you for your support and for what you are waiting for ите Take care of yourself and your health. 👏
I wish everyone to perform with dignity! And success and good luck to my friends, I am with you 🙏

He also said that their participation was agreed with by the head of the Russian Figure Skating Federation and that it's a smaller rink and light show numbers, which is different than a competition. I think it's understandable, but maybe not an entirely wise decision nonetheless just in terms of optics. But I hope it will turn out for the best. Most likely those who like them won't mind and those who mind never liked them anyway.

I think of The Silver Skates as the story of Hans Brinker also. I suppose that won't hurt the film's marketers any, though, since likely anyone who knows the story of Hans Brinker & the Silver Skates is also going to be interested in a film about skating.

I think there is no way that Sinitsina & Katsalapov would be skipping Nationals if they thought they had the time to be physically ready to compete with another top level team. They will be forfeiting the national title. Which means someone else will be the Russian national champions heading into any post season events and next season. Do I think it is bizarre that S&K are planning to do a show? Yes. I'm surprised the Russian Fed will allow it. But it's not stupid for S&K to avoid going to Nationals if they are not ready for this head-to-head. I don't think there was any way that Stepanova & Bukin were going to come back for Rostelecom or a Russian Cup event until they were really ready either.

Neither of these teams needed to do so, IMO. I assume they are both safe to make a World team as long as they don't go out and bomb.

Just a joke about social distancing.
(Some people remind about masks even when they see a family photo without other people near the family.)
He thinks congratulation may look like this.

Yagudin is just being his usual charming self.

The author of the 19th century novel is Mary Mapes Dodge, and she gave the original name to her story: "Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates". It was known initially by the reading crowds as "Hans Brinker" for shorter say, but at some point for the same purpose people started calling it "Silver Skates".

There is not connection between the Russian film and the old novel. The novel is about speed skating, not figure skating. The film has segments of figure skating.

The cast in this film are "no names", bunch of new young actors. It was mentioned in one of the articles about the film. The producers' hope is to attract the audience not with big names but with the story and the cinematographics by them selves.

Just for info: Navka's "Scarlet Flower" show will take place in Sochi, not Moscow. So Sin/Katz will get the "Black Sea breeze and air" for their lungs. Black Sea is good for that... even in winter.

Some news from Anna Shcherbakova.

Re Nationals: She plans to skate because she can't imagine missing Nationals. But her recovery from illness is still in process. It affects her training, she is not able to do the run-throughs as much as required for such competition. She hopes that on the start of the competition she'll be read. She also talks how she started getting ill long before she realized it.

Re Nike: Anna has a new project with Nike. She announces it in english (hardly any accent, imo).

Few new products from Nike, Anna demonstrates, unusual form and colors...
