Will we get 2020-21 GP assignments, and when?

ccording to the John Hopkins University the number of daily cases isn't at is highest anymore. 1
But we're an ENORMOUS country. 17 states is a lot and they are still not over the peak.

I don't know enough about Russia to know what's going on there but it's possibly the same.

There is no way a country should allow US residents into their country because they have no idea if that person has recently spent time in a hotspot or not.

The border between the US and Canada is still closed to all but "essential travel" and even returning Canadians are subject to the 2-week self-isolation. The same applies for entering some provinces in Canada - New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, for example, are both only open for essential travel for people coming from other provinces with self-isolation required upon arrival.

So the fact we know is, that until september/october it will be much better for sure. Thats why countries are opening up.

No. Some countries/regions are opening up because their leaders are more concerned about getting the economy going again than they are about public health. And pretty much every reliable source I've seen is predicting a second wave in the fall, when people get too comfortable and don't take precautions because they think it's over.

In some regions of the US that opened up, the infection rates are rising again. So this is not over by a long shot.

We need to lose the fear of it. The damage what we did with the lockdown can only be done once.

Some studies of the lockdowns are saying that millions of people's lives were saved because of the measures that were taken.

I'd say that's a reasonable tradeoff. Jobs and economies can be rebuilt; lost lives can't.

Coachella was originally rescheduled from April to October. It was just canceled and a limited attendance event is being planned for next April. I can’t see a Grand Prix happening.

Agreed, we’re not out of the woods yet. A second wave will happen before it gets better

Skate America is currently scheduled for Las Vegas, which is in Clark County, Nevada.

This article was published today:

Number of new COVID-19 cases surges in Nevada, Clark County

No way of knowing what the scenario will be like in October. Predictions for the fall, of course, are not good. (SA is always held just around the start of cold & flu season. As probably a lot of us can attest).

We are still not talking about now, we are talking about a couple of month time. Until now even traveling within the EU is not possible, but next week the borders will open up. Same will be in other parts eventually.

Yeah, US and Canad. But Europe will open the borders by next weeks. Just because USA and Canada do that it doesnt mean its the legit.

There are so many different studies. Some people say it will happen, some people say it won't. Of course we only look into the studies that fit our opinion.

Oh yeah if Coachella can't be hold we can't hold the Grand Prix. Sounds reasonable to make this hipster festival the benchmark.

Why is everyone here in bad mood about the future? Let's be optimistic.

Which is exactly what you're doing, by saying that everything should open up right away and the GPF should go ahead as scheduled.

The majority of epidemiologists around the world say a second wave will happen. That's a lot more than "some", and these are experts.

I never said right away, and I am saying the rest of the JGP, GP and GPF should go ahead as planned. If you are to scared to go, then just don't go. I'm pretty sure skaters and many people are happy to be there. There is no need for doomsday warnings.

Hundreds of thousands of people are dying around the world from a v*r*s that doesn't have an antidote and that can't be accurately tracked. If you don't think that's something to be concerned about, then enjoy your bubble.

On a practical level, the JGP, GP and GPF events won't be able to go ahead if skaters aren't allowed to travel internationally, or if the health authorities in the host cities/countries put restrictions in place that make it impossible to hold the events.

Did you notice that there will be international sport events starting from July and August? Are they all living in a bubble?
Again, I am not talking about NOW. In a couple of month when the first (and in my opinion only) wave is over and when we probably have an antidote.

A realistic assessment of probabilities is not pessimistic, it's just a prognosis of what is likely to happen based on looking on all influencing factors.

And your predictions are not optimistic either, they are naive. For example you are ignoring the financial situation of a sport like figure skating completely, if you compare it with formula 1 for example.

Yeah thats the keypoint, no competitions, no money. Money is earned by sponsors, tv broadcasts...not by canceling competitions

I live in Nevada - you are wrong. Published today -
Coronavirus cases in Nevada are, once again, on the rise. Over the last week, Nevada reported more new confirmed COVID-19 cases than in any other week since the beginning of the pandemic, a more than 50 percent increase over the prior week's new case total.
We do not know the future. But Nevada is bordered by three states where numbers are spiking - Arizona, Utah, and California. And the casinos just reopened last week and tourists are piling in. I do not think this will be over in a month or two.

Since the latest projections in the US is to have 200,000 plus deaths by Sept 1 we haven't begun to get to the end of first wave. If I was a skater and skaters coaching team I would wonder about the risk. If I was a judge, typically in an older age group, I would want to know what precautions are in place.

I dont see borders opening for all international travelers. If they do happen I dont know that fans will be allowed in arenas.

Well we'll see which predictions were realistic in a few months ;)

It would be nice if there were to be some international competitions of some form before 2021, but I certainly don't see federations from countries were figure skating is a niche sport anyway spontanously hosting a Grand Prix that they usually don't host in a year like this, so I think moving something spontanously to countries like Finland or Germany is a bit far-fetched.

Most countries are pretty occupied finding concepts or new dates for the thousands of events of all kinds that were postponed from earlier this year.

Far fechted like 2 years ago when Helsinki replaced the Cup of China?

Was there a global ********* causing mass border shutdowns and movement restrictions in 2018? I didn't realise.

I'm pretty sure that many countries dont take all your doomsday predictions and are still happy to host competitions. The pandemic will be over after summer, no reason to not make any competitions

Because only northern hemisphere countries have summers, it is known. The virus didn't take hold in Brazil (approx. 805,650 cases, 41,050 deaths) and Peru (approx. 215,000 cases, 6100 deaths) and start tearing through their populations like a bushfire through a gumtree forest during their summer, no indeed...

How do you suppose competitions will be a go when things have been rushed to open and the numbers have gone up? The city of Houston is considering shutting down again. Other cities will probably follow this. Some undoubtedly will not. Do you think everyone will be in a rush/even allowed to travel internationally into countries that have had more successful numbers? Don’t think so. Do you think everyone will be in a rush to go into countries where the numbers keep rising? The numbers were crazy high with stay at home precautions in place. You let people run free and get back to their ‘normal lives’ and then there are many variables outside of a figure skating rink. They don’t have planes transporting all ISU members. They don’t have one rink to use for the entire year while skaters have to stay in the same city (NBA). The officials in the ISU are almost all high-risk.

The thought that the numbers will go down in the next few months when many countries are doing less than they did initially to stop transmission is illogical.

Yeah, but this is an american problem, they have over a quarter of infected and victims of the total number, in Asia and Europe its mostly under control and numbers have never beens so high like in USA.

Until they open borders to people from everywhere else. If you think they are only going to open borders to American figure skaters.....

Don't forget Russia is also seeing an increase in numbers.
